سُورَةُ الصَّافَّاتِ
The Rank-setters
37:1
وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفّٗا ١
By those [angels] who range themselves in ranks,
37:2
فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجۡرٗا ٢
those who are so strong in repelling [evil],
37:3
فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ٣
those who thus proclaim the Message [of Allāh]!1
37:4
إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمۡ لَوَٰحِدٞ ٤
Verily, verily, your god is only One!,
37:5
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ ٥
Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of every point at the rising [of the Sun]!
37:6
إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ٦
Verily, We have adorned the lower heaven with the beauty of the stars,
37:7
وَحِفۡظٗا مِّن كُلِّ شَيۡطَٰنٖ مَّارِدٖ ٧
and as a guard against all rebellious satans.
37:8
لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَيُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٖ ٨
[So] that they should not eavesdrop in the direction of the Exalted Assembly1and are cast away from every side,
37:9
دُحُورٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ وَاصِبٌ ٩
repulsed. And for them is a perpetual punishment,
37:10
إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٞ ثَاقِبٞ ١٠
except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
37:11
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَآۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّن طِينٖ لَّازِبِۭ ١١
So ask them [the polytheists]: are they the more difficult to create, or the [other] beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
37:12
بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُونَ ١٢
Truly you do marvel, while they ridicule,
37:13
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ لَا يَذۡكُرُونَ ١٣
and, when they are reminded [of Allāh], they pay no heed,
37:14
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ ءَايَةٗ يَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ١٤
And, when they see a Sign [of Allāh], turn to mockery,
37:15
وَقَالُوٓاْ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ مُّبِينٌ ١٥
and say, “This is nothing but manifest magic!
37:16
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ١٦
[and they say:] “What? When we die, and become dust and bones, shall we [then] be raised up [again]?
37:17
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ١٧
“and also our fathers of old?”
37:18
قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَٰخِرُونَ ١٨
Say: “Yes, and you shall then be utterly humiliated [on account of your evil deeds].”
37:19
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ فَإِذَا هُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ ١٩
Then it will be [only] a single [compelling] cry; and, behold, they will begin to see!
37:20
وَقَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ٢٠
They will say, “Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgement!”
37:21
هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٢١
[A voice will say:] “This is the Day of Sorting out1which you used to disbelieve!”
37:22
ٱحۡشُرُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَأَزۡوَٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡبُدُونَ ٢٢
“Collect together!” [it shall be said], “the wrongdoers and their associates, and the things they used to worship,
37:23
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٢٣
“besides Allāh, and drive them on the way to Hell!
37:24
وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡـُٔولُونَ ٢٤
“And stop them [there], for they are to be questioned:
37:25
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ٢٥
“‘What is the matter with you that you help not each other?’”
37:26
بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ٢٦
Nay, but [that] day they shall submit [to Judgement];
37:27
وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ٢٧
And they will turn to one another, questioning.
37:28
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ ٢٨
They will say [to the satans]: “It was you who used to come to us from the right hand.”1
37:29
قَالُواْ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ ٢٩
They [satans] will reply: “Nay, you yourselves had no Faith!
37:30
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمٗا طَٰغِينَ ٣٠
“Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it is you who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
37:31
فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ ٣١
“So now the Word of our Lord has been proved true against us, that we shall indeed [have to] taste [the punishment for our sins]:
37:32
فَأَغۡوَيۡنَٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَٰوِينَ ٣٢
“We led you astray: for truly we ourselves were astray.”
37:33
فَإِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ٣٣
Truly, that Day they will [all] share in the Punishment.
37:34
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ٣٤
Verily, that is how We deal with the sinners.
37:35
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ٣٥
For they, when they were told that there is no god but Allāh, would behave arrogantly,
37:36
وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٖ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ٣٦
And they would say: “What! Shall we give up our gods for the sake of a poet bewitched?”
37:37
بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ٣٧
Nay! He [the Prophet] has come with Truth, and he confirms [the Message of] the Messengers [before him].1
37:38
إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآئِقُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِيمِ ٣٨
You shall indeed taste of the painful Punishment,
37:39
وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ٣٩
and you are requited nothing but what you did.
37:40
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ٤٠
But the saved servants1of Allāh —
37:41
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ ٤١
for them is a Sustenance pre-determined,
37:42
فَوَٰكِهُۖ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ٤٢
fruits; and they shall be honoured,
37:43
فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٤٣
in gardens of delight,
37:44
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ ٤٤
[sitting there] facing each other on raised couches.
37:45
يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِكَأۡسٖ مِّن مَّعِينِۭ ٤٥
Round will be passed to them a cup from a [flowing] spring,
37:46
بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةٖ لِّلشَّٰرِبِينَ ٤٦
crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink [thereof],
37:47
لَا فِيهَا غَوۡلٞ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنزَفُونَ ٤٧
free from giddiness; nor will they suffer exhaustion therefrom.
37:48
وَعِندَهُمۡ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِينٞ ٤٨
And besides them will be [chaste] women restraining their glances, with big [beautiful] eyes,
37:49
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضٞ مَّكۡنُونٞ ٤٩
as if they were [delicate] eggs closely protected.1
37:50
فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ٥٠
So they will turn to one another, questioning.
37:51
قَالَ قَآئِلٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٞ ٥١
One of them will say: “I had an intimate companion [on the earth],
37:52
يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِينَ ٥٢
“who used to say, do you really believe?
37:53
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ ٥٣
“When we die and become dust and bones, shall we be called to account?”
37:54
قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ٥٤
He said: “Would you like to look down?”
37:55
فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِي سَوَآءِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٥٥
So, he looked down and saw that [erstwhile companion] in the midst of the Fire.
37:56
قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِينِ ٥٦
He said: “By Allāh! You were [only] a little short of destroying me!
37:57
وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ ٥٧
“Had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those sent [there]!”
37:58
أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ ٥٨
“Is it [really the case] that [now] we shall not die,1
37:59
إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ ٥٩
“except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?”
37:60
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ ٦٠
Verily, this is the Supreme Success.
37:61
لِمِثۡلِ هَٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَٰمِلُونَ ٦١
For the like of this let all strive, who do strive.
37:62
أَذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرٞ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ٦٢
Is that the better sustenance or the tree of Zaqqūm?1
37:63
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ ٦٣
For We have truly made it [as] a trial for the wrongdoers.1
37:64
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٞ تَخۡرُجُ فِيٓ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٦٤
It is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell:
37:65
طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ ٦٥
The shoots of its [fruit-stalks] are like the heads of satans:
37:66
فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَأٓكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ٦٦
Truly they [dwellers of Hell] will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
37:67
ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبٗا مِّنۡ حَمِيمٖ ٦٧
Then on top of that they will be given as drink a mixture made of boiling water.
37:68
ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٦٨
Then shall their return be to the [Blazing] Fire.
37:69
إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ ضَآلِّينَ ٦٩
They had found their fathers misguided,
37:70
فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُونَ ٧٠
so they [too] rushed down in their footsteps!
37:71
وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٧١
And truly, before them, most of the ancients went astray;
37:72
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ ٧٢
Verily, We had sent among them, Warners.
37:73
فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ ٧٣
So see what was the fate of those who were warned,
37:74
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ٧٤
except the saved servants1of Allāh.
37:75
وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٞ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِيبُونَ ٧٥
[In the days of old], Nūḥ cried to Us, and We are the Best to answer [prayer].
37:76
وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ٧٦
And We delivered him [Nūḥ] and his family from the Great Distress,
37:77
وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِينَ ٧٧
And We made his progeny to survive [on earth];
37:78
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ٧٨
And We left [this blessing] for him among generations to come in later times:1
37:79
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٖ فِي ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٧٩
Peace be on Nūḥ among the nations!
37:80
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ٨٠
Thus indeed do We reward those who do good.
37:81
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٨١
He was indeed one of Our believing servants.
37:82
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ ٨٢
Then the rest We drowned in the Flood.
37:83
وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٨٣
Verily, from his party was Ibrāhīm.1
37:84
إِذۡ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبٖ سَلِيمٍ ٨٤
[Remember] when he approached his Lord with a pure heart.1
37:85
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ٨٥
[Remember] when he said to his father and his people, “What is that which you worship?
37:86
أَئِفۡكًا ءَالِهَةٗ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ ٨٦
“Is it Falsehood — gods other than Allāh — that you desire?
37:87
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٨٧
“So what is your estimation of the Lord of the Worlds?”
37:88
فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةٗ فِي ٱلنُّجُومِ ٨٨
Then he did cast a glance at the stars,
37:89
فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٞ ٨٩
and he said, “I am indeed sick [at heart]!”
37:90
فَتَوَلَّوۡاْ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِينَ ٩٠
So they turned away from him, and departed.
37:91
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ٩١
Then he [deceitfully] turned to their gods and told [them]: “Will you not eat [of the offerings before you]?
37:92
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ٩٢
“What is the matter with you that you speak not?”
37:93
فَرَاغَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡيَمِينِ ٩٣
Then he turned upon them [deceitfully] striking [at them] with the right hand.
37:94
فَأَقۡبَلُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّونَ ٩٤
Then came [the worshippers] hastening to him.
37:95
قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ٩٥
He said: “Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve?
37:96
وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ٩٦
“While it is Allāh who has created you and your handiwork!”1
37:97
قَالُواْ ٱبۡنُواْ لَهُۥ بُنۡيَٰنٗا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِي ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٩٧
They said, “Build him a furnace, and throw him into the Blazing Fire!”
37:98
فَأَرَادُواْ بِهِۦ كَيۡدٗا فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِينَ ٩٨
So, they plotted against him, but We made them the lowest!
37:99
وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ ٩٩
He [Ibrāhīm] said: “I am going to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
37:100
رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ١٠٠
“O My Lord! Grant me a righteous [son]!”
37:101
فَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ حَلِيمٖ ١٠١
So We gave him the good tidings of a forbearing son.
37:102
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡيَ قَالَ يَٰبُنَيَّ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰ فِي ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّيٓ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ يَٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِيٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ ١٠٢
Then, when [the son] reached [the age of] [serious] work with him, he said: “O My son! I see in a dream that I am offering you in sacrifice: Now see what is your view!” [The son] said: “O My father! Do as you are commanded: You will find me, if Allāh so wills, one of the patiently enduring.”
37:103
فَلَمَّآ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِينِ ١٠٣
So when they both had submitted [their wills to Allāh], and he had laid him [his son] prostrate on his forehead [for sacrifice],1
37:104
وَنَٰدَيۡنَٰهُ أَن يَٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُ ١٠٤
We called out to him “O Ibrāhīm!
37:105
قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡيَآۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ١٠٥
“You have already fulfilled the dream!” — thus indeed do We reward those who do right
37:106
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَٰٓؤُاْ ٱلۡمُبِينُ ١٠٦
Verily, this was a clear trial.
37:107
وَفَدَيۡنَٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِيمٖ ١٠٧
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice:
37:108
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٠٨
And We left for him among generations [to come] in later times:1
37:109
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ١٠٩
Peace [and salutation] be on Ibrāhīm!
37:110
كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ١١٠
Thus indeed do We reward the doers of good [deeds].
37:111
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ١١١
Indeed he [Ibrāhīm] was one of Our believing servants,1
37:112
وَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِإِسۡحَٰقَ نَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ١١٢
and We gave him the good tidings of Isḥāq,1a Prophet, one of the righteous.
37:113
وَبَٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسۡحَٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنٞ وَظَالِمٞ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِينٞ ١١٣
And We blessed him and Isḥāq. And of their progeny [some] are that do right, and [some] that clearly do wrong to themselves.
37:114
وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ ١١٤
Again [of old] We bestowed Our favour on Mūsā1and Hārūn,2
37:115
وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ١١٥
And We saved them and their people from the great distress.
37:116
وَنَصَرۡنَٰهُمۡ فَكَانُواْ هُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبِينَ ١١٦
And We helped them, so they were the victorious;
37:117
وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِينَ ١١٧
And We gave them both the Book1which helps to make [matters] clear;
37:118
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ ١١٨
And We guided them both to the Straight Path.
37:119
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمَا فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١١٩
And We left for them among generations [to come] in later times:1
37:120
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ ١٢٠
Peace [and salutation] be to Mūsā and Hārūn!
37:121
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ١٢١
Thus indeed do We reward the doers of good.
37:122
إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ١٢٢
Indeed, they both were of Our believing servants.1
37:123
وَإِنَّ إِلۡيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ١٢٣
[So also] was Ilyās1among the Messengers.
37:124
إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ١٢٤
[Remember] when he said to his people, “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
37:125
أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلٗا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَٰلِقِينَ ١٢٥
“Do you call upon Ba‘l1and forsake the Best of Creators,
37:126
ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٢٦
“Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old?”
37:127
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ١٢٧
But they disbelieved him, and they will certainly be called up [for punishment],
37:128
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ١٢٨
except the chosen [and saved] servants of Allāh.
37:129
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٢٩
And We left for him among generations [to come] in later times:1
37:130
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلۡ يَاسِينَ ١٣٠
Peace and salutation to Ilyāsīn!1
37:131
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ١٣١
Thus indeed do We reward the doers of good [deeds].
37:132
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ١٣٢
He indeed was one of Our believing servants.
37:133
وَإِنَّ لُوطٗا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ١٣٣
So [also] was Lūṭ1among the Messengers.
37:134
إِذۡ نَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ ١٣٤
[Remember] when We saved him and his household, all
37:135
إِلَّا عَجُوزٗا فِي ٱلۡغَٰبِرِينَ ١٣٥
except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind [perished]:1
37:136
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ ١٣٦
Then We destroyed the rest.
37:137
وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِينَ ١٣٧
Verily, you pass by their [sites] at dawn [by day-time]
37:138
وَبِٱلَّيۡلِۗ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ١٣٨
and by night: Will you then not understand?1
37:139
وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ١٣٩
So [also] was Yūnus1among the Messengers.
37:140
إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ١٤٠
When he ran away to the ship [fully] laden.
37:141
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِينَ ١٤١
He [agreed to] cast of lots, and he was of the rebutted:1
37:142
فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٞ ١٤٢
So the [big] fish swallowed him up while he was blameworthy.1
37:143
فَلَوۡلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِينَ ١٤٣
Had it not been that he [was one of those who] glorified [Allāh],
37:144
لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطۡنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُونَ ١٤٤
he would certainly have remained inside the fish belly till the Day of Resurrection.
37:145
فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٞ ١٤٥
So We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,
37:146
وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةٗ مِّن يَقۡطِينٖ ١٤٦
and We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.
37:147
وَأَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِاْئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ يَزِيدُونَ ١٤٧
And We sent him [on a mission] to a people numbering a hundred thousand or more.
37:148
فَـَٔامَنُواْ فَمَتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِينٖ ١٤٨
So they believed; so We allowed them to enjoy [their life] for a while.
37:149
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ١٤٩
Now ask them their opinion: Is it that your Lord has [only] daughters, and they have the sons?1
37:150
أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَٰثٗا وَهُمۡ شَٰهِدُونَ ١٥٠
Or that We created the angels as females, and they were witnesses [thereto]?
37:151
أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُولُونَ ١٥١
Verily, they say this out of their slander that,
37:152
وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ ١٥٢
“Allāh has begotten children!” They are liars indeed.
37:153
أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِينَ ١٥٣
Did He [then] choose the daughters over the sons?
37:154
مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ١٥٤
What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
37:155
أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ١٥٥
Will you not then receive admonition?
37:156
أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَٰنٞ مُّبِينٞ ١٥٦
Or do you have an authority manifest?
37:157
فَأۡتُواْ بِكِتَٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ ١٥٧
[If] so, bring you your Book [of authority] if you are Truthful!
37:158
وَجَعَلُواْ بَيۡنَهُۥ وَبَيۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبٗاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ١٥٨
And they have invented a kinship between Him [Allāh] and the Jinns:1But the Jinns know [quite well] that they will be brought before Him [for account].
37:159
سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ ١٥٩
Glory to Allāh! [He is free] from what they ascribe [to Him]!
37:160
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ١٦٠
Not [so do] the servants1of Allāh, the saved ones.
37:161
فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ١٦١
For, verily, neither you nor those you worship
37:162
مَآ أَنتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ بِفَٰتِنِينَ ١٦٢
can mislead [any] about Him [Allāh],
37:163
إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ١٦٣
except such as is [going] to burn in the Blazing Fire!1
37:164
وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ ١٦٤
“None of us [angels]1but has a place appointed;
37:165
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ ١٦٥
“And we [angels] are verily ranged in ranks [for service];
37:166
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ١٦٦
“And, verily, we are the ones who declare [Allāh’s] glory!”
37:167
وَإِن كَانُواْ لَيَقُولُونَ ١٦٧
And there were those who said,
37:168
لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٦٨
“If only we had before us a Message from the ancients,
37:169
لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ١٦٩
“we would certainly have been saved servants of Allāh!”
37:170
فَكَفَرُواْ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ ١٧٠
So [now that the Qur’ān has come], they reject it: So soon will they know!
37:171
وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ١٧١
Already has Our Word gone before [this] to Our servants [Messengers] sent [by Us],
37:172
إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ١٧٢
that they would certainly be helped,
37:173
وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبُونَ ١٧٣
And that Our forces must surely be triumphant.
37:174
فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ ١٧٤
So turn away from them for a little while,
37:175
وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ ١٧٥
And watch them [how they fare], and they soon shall see [how you fare]!
37:176
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ١٧٦
Do they wish [indeed] to hurry on our Punishment?
37:177
فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ ١٧٧
But when it [Punishment] descends upon their courtyards, evil will be the morning for those who were warned [and heeded not]!
37:178
وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ ١٧٨
So turn you away from them for a while,
37:179
وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ ١٧٩
And watch [how they fare] and they soon shall see [how you fare]!
37:180
سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ ١٨٠
Glory to your Lord, the Lord of Power! [He is free] from what they ascribe [to Him]!
37:181
وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ١٨١
And Peace be on the Messengers!
37:182
وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ١٨٢
And all Praise to Allāh, the Lord of the Worlds.
