Ṣād

Bismillah
38:1
Ṣād!1By the Qur’ān, [the Book] of Admonition:2[This is the Truth].
38:2
But those who rejected [the Message] are [steeped] in arrogance and trouble-making.
38:3
How many generations before them did We annihilate? In the end, they cried out [for mercy] when there was no longer time for being saved!
38:4
And they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! And the Rejecters say, “This is a magician, an utter liar!
38:5
“Has he made the gods [all] into one God? Truly this is a strange thing!”
38:6
And the chiefs among them went away [impatiently], [saying], “Walk you away, and remain steadfast to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed [against you]!1
38:7
“We never heard [the like] of this in the previous religion.1This is nothing but a made-up [tale]!
38:8
“What! Has the Message been sent to him [of all persons] among us?” But they are in doubt concerning My [Own] Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!
38:9
Or have they the Treasures of the Mercy of your Lord, the Mighty, the Most [Generous] Dispenser of Bounties?
38:10
Or do they own the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between them? If so, let them mount up means [to reach that end]!
38:11
They are but an army of confederates and they will be put to defeat.1
38:12
Before them [were many who] disbelieved [Messengers]: People of Nūḥ, and the ‘Ād,1and the Pharaoh,2the Lord of Stakes,3
38:13
and the Thamūd,1and the people of Lūṭ,2and the People of the Wood;3such were the Confederates.
38:14
Not one but [all of them] disbelieved the Messengers, so My Punishment became justly due [to them].
38:15
These [the present Rejecters] only wait for a single mighty Thunder, which [when it comes] will allow no respite.
38:16
They say: “Our Lord! Hasten to us our portion [even] before the Day of Judgement!”
38:17
Endure patiently what they say [O Prophet], and remember Our servant Dā’ūd,1the man of strength. He ever turned [in repentance to Allāh].
38:18
We had made the mountains subservient to him, so these used to declare, in unison with him, Our praises, at evening and at break of the day,
38:19
and the birds gathered [in assemblies]: all turned with him [to Allāh].
38:20
We strengthened his dominion, and gave him wisdom and sound speech.
38:21
Has the story of the disputants reached you? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the [private prayer] chamber;1
38:22
when they entered to Dā’ūd, and he was terrified of them, they said: “Fear not: we are two disputants, one of whom has wronged the other: Decide between us with truth, and do no injustice, but guide us to the straight path.
38:23
“This is my brother: He has ninety-nine female sheep, and I have [but] one [female] sheep: Yet he said, ‘Commit her to my care,’ and he overcame me in the argument.
38:24
He [Dā’ūd] said: “He has undoubtedly wronged you in demanding your [single] female sheep to be added to his [flock of] female sheep: truly many are the partners [in business] who wrong each other except those who believe [in Allāh] and do righteous deeds, and how few are they?” And Dā’ūd understood that We had put him to test: so he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing [in prostration], and turned [to Allāh in repentance].
38:25
So We forgave him that [lapse]: he enjoyed, indeed, a closeness to Us, and [for him is] a beautiful place of [final] Return.
38:26
O Dā’ūd! We did indeed make you a vicegerent on earth: so judge between people in truth [and justice]: and follow not the lusts [of your heart], for it will mislead you from the Path of Allāh: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allāh is a Punishment Grievous, for they forgot the Day of Judgement.
38:27
Not in vain did We create heaven and earth and all between them! That was the conjecture of the Rejecters! So, woe to the Rejecters who are destined to face the Fire [of Hell]!
38:28
Shall We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds, the same as those who make mischief on earth? Shall We treat the [God‐]fearing, the same as the wicked?1
38:29
[This is] a Book which We have sent down unto you, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that people of understanding may receive admonition.
38:30
To Dā’ūd We bestowed Sulaymān1[for a son]. How excellent is the servant! Ever did he turn [to Us in repentance]!
38:31
Behold, there were brought before him [Sulaymān], at evening, horses standing on three feet,1of excellent breed;2
38:32
And he said, “Truly, I preferred [worldly] wealth to the remembrance of my Lord, until [the Sun] was hidden in the veil [of night]:
38:33
“Bring them back to me.” Then began he to pass his hand over [their] legs and their necks.1
38:34
And We did test Sulaymān: We placed on his throne a body but he did turn [to Us in true repentance]:1
38:35
He said, “O My Lord! Forgive me, and grant me a dominion [like of] which will not belong to another after me: For You are the Most [Generous] Dispenser of Bounties.”
38:36
So We made subservient the Wind to his power, to flow gently to his order, whithersoever he willed,
38:37
as also [subject to Sulaymān were] satans [including] every kind of builder and diver,
38:38
as also others bound together in fetters.
38:39
[Sulaymān was told:] “These are Our Bounties: Whether you bestow them [on others] or withhold them, no account will be asked.”
38:40
And he [Sulaymān] enjoyed, indeed, a closeness to Us, and a beautiful Place of [final] Return [in the Hereafter].
38:41
And remember Our servant Ayyūb.1Behold, he cried to his Lord: “The Shayṭān has afflicted me with distress and suffering!”
38:42
[Allāh told Ayyūb:] “Strike with your foot: Here is [water] wherein to wash, cool [and refreshing], and to drink.”
38:43
And We gave him [back] his family and doubled their number, as a Mercy from Us, and a thing for remembrance for all who have Understanding.1
38:44
[Allāh told Ayyūb:] “And take in your hand a little grass, and strike [her] therewith: and break not [your oath].”1Truly, We found him patiently enduring. How excellent is [this] servant! Ever did he turn [to Us]!
38:45
And remember Our servants1Ibrāhīm,2Isḥāq3and Ya‘qūb,4possessors of power and vision.
38:46
Verily, We did choose them for a special [purpose]: the remembrance of the Hereafter.1
38:47
They were, in Our sight, truly, of the company of the select and the chosen.
38:48
And remember Ismā‘īl,1Alyasa‘,2and Dhu’l-Kifl:3Each of them was of [the company of] the chosen.
38:49
This is a Message [of admonition]: and verily, for the [God‐] fearing is a beautiful Place of [Final] Return,
38:50
Gardens of Eternity, whose doors will be wide open [to them];
38:51
Therein will they recline [at ease]: Therein will they call [at pleasure] for fruits in abundance, and [delicious] drink;
38:52
And beside them will be chaste women restraining their glances, [companions] of equal age.
38:53
Such is the Promise made to you for the Day of Judgement!
38:54
Truly such will be our Bounty [to you]; it will never come to an end;
38:55
Yes! But for the transgressors will be an evil place of [final] Return!
38:56
[That is] Hell! They will burn therein — an evil bed [indeed, to lie on]!
38:57
Yes! Let them taste it: a boiling fluid, and a thick purulent matter!
38:58
And other [penalties] of a similar kind, to match them!
38:59
Here is a group rushing headlong to [join] you! No welcome for them! Truly, they shall burn in the Fire!1
38:60
[The followers shall cry to their evil leaders:] “Nay, you [too]! No welcome for you! It is you who have brought this upon us! So how evil is your [eternal] abode.”
38:61
They will say: “Our Lord! Whoever brought this upon us, add to him a double punishment in the Fire!”
38:62
And they will say: “How is it that we see not [here] men who we used to consider among the wicked?
38:63
“We treated them in ridicule, or did [our] eyes fail to perceive them?”
38:64
That is true: the mutual recriminations of the People of the Fire!
38:65
Say [O Prophet]: “Truly, am I a Warner [proclaiming] there is no god but Allāh, the One, the Supreme Subduer,
38:66
“Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between them, the Mighty, the Ever-Forgiving.”1
38:67
Say [O Prophet]: “That is a Tremendous Tidings.
38:68
“From which you do turn away!
38:69
“No knowledge have I of the Exalted Chiefs when they disputed among themselves.1
38:70
“Only this has been revealed to me: that I am to a Warner, manifest.”
38:71
[Remember] when your Lord said to the angels: “I am going to create Man from clay:
38:72
“When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, fall you down in prostration unto him.”
38:73
So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together,
38:74
with the exception of Iblīs: he was arrogant, and [became] one of the Rejecters.
38:75
[Allāh] said: “O Iblīs! What prevented you from prostrating yourself to what I have created with My hands? Are you arrogant? Or are you one of the high [and mighty] ones?”
38:76
He [Iblīs] said: “I am better than him: You created me from Fire, and him You created from Clay.”
38:77
He [Allāh] said: “Then get out from here: for you are accursed [rejected].
38:78
“And My Curse shall be on you till the Day of Judgement.”
38:79
He [Iblīs] said: “O My Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the [dead] are raised.”
38:80
He [Allāh] said: “Respite is granted to you
38:81
“till the Day of the Time Appointed.”
38:82
He [Iblīs] said: “Then, by Your Honour, I will lead them all astray,
38:83
“except Your servants amongst them, who are saved.”
38:84

“I will certainly fill Hell with you and those that follow you, every one of them.”
38:86

“This is none but a Reminder to [all] the worlds.
38:88
“And you shall certainly know the truth of it [all] after a while.”1
