Bismillah
26:1
Ṭā. Sīn. Mīm.1
26:2
These are the verses of the Illuminating Book.
26:3
It seems that you [O Prophet] will kill yourself [with grief], that they do not become Believers.
26:4
If [such] were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks [forever] in humility.
26:5
But there comes not to them any newly-revealed Message from the Most-Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
26:6
They have indeed disbelieved [the Message]: so they will know soon [enough] the truth of what they mocked!
26:7
Do they not look at the earth — how many noble pairs1of all kinds We have produced therein?
26:8
Verily, in this, there is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
26:9
And verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:10
And [remember] when your Lord called Mūsā1[telling him:] “Go to the people given to wrongdoing,
26:11
“the people of the Pharaoh1[and tell them:] ‘Will they not fear [Allāh]?’”
26:12
He said: “O My Lord! I do fear that they will disbelieve me,”
26:13
“My breast is straitened, and my tongue does not speak [plainly]: so send unto Hārūn.”1
26:14
“And [further], they have a charge of crime against me;1so I fear that they may kill me.”
26:15
Allāh said: “By no means! Proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen [to your call].
26:16
“So go forth, both of you, to the Pharaoh, and say: ‘We [I am] the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds,
26:17
[with the Message] “that you send with us the Children of Isrā’īl.’”
26:18
[The Pharaoh] said: “Did we not foster you as a child among us, and did you not stay in our midst many years of your life?
26:19
“And you did a deed of yours which [you know] you did, and you are an ungrateful!”1
26:20
Mūsā said: “I did it then when I was one of the misguided.
26:21
“So I fled from you [all] when I feared you. Then my Lord invested me with wisdom and appointed me as one of the Messengers.
26:22
“And this is the favour with which you do reproach me, that you have enslaved the Children of Isrā’īl!”
26:23
Pharaoh said: “And what is the Lord of the Worlds?”
26:24
He [Mūsā] said: “[He is] the Lord the heavens and the earth, and all between them, if you had but sure belief.”
26:25
He [the Pharaoh] said to those around him: “Did you not listen [to what he says]?”
26:26
[Mūsā] said: “[He is] your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!”
26:27
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Truly your Messenger, who has been sent to you, is a [man] bewitched!”
26:28
He [Mūsā] said: “[He is the] Lord of the East and the West, and all between them! If only you had understanding!”
26:29
He [the Pharaoh] said: “If you take any god other than me, I will certainly throw you into prison!”
26:30
He [Mūsā] said: “Even if I showed you something clear [and convincing]?”
26:31
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Show it then, if you are truthful!”
26:32
So [Mūsā] threw his rod, and behold, it became a serpent, plain [for all to see]!
26:33
And he [Mūsā] drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the beholders!
26:34
He [the Pharaoh] said to the chiefs around him: “This is indeed a magician well-versed:
26:35
“He wants to expel you from your land using his magic. So what is it you counsel?”
26:36
They said: “Keep him and his brother in suspense [for a while], and dispatch to the towns heralds to collect.
26:37
“They will bring up to you all magicians, well-versed.”
26:38
So the magicians were assembled for a day appointed,
26:39
And the people were told: “Are you [getting] assembled?,
26:40
“that we may follow the magicians if they win?”
26:41
So when the magicians arrived, they said to the Pharaoh: “Shall we have a [suitable] reward if we overcome?”
26:42
He said: “Yes, [and more], for you shall in that case be among the people close [to me].”
26:43
Mūsā said to them: “Throw you that which you are to throw!”
26:44
So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: “By the might of the Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly overcome!”
26:45
Then Mūsā threw his rod, and it straightway swallowed up all the falsehoods which they faked!
26:46
So the magicians fell down, prostrate,
26:47
saying: “We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
26:48
“the Lord of Mūsā and Hārūn.”
26:49
He [the Pharaoh] said, “Believe you in Him before I give you permission? Surely he is your leader who has taught you magic! But soon shall you know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.”
26:50
They said: “No matter! We shall [only] return to our Lord!”
26:51
“Our only desire is that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first to believe.”
26:52
And We revealed to Mūsā: “Travel by night with my servants;1for surely you shall be pursued.”
26:53
So the Pharaoh sent collectors to the towns,
26:54
[saying]: “These [Isrā’īlites] are but a small [evil] band,
26:55
“And they have surely enraged us,”
26:56
“and we all are amply vigilant.”
26:57
So We expelled them from orchards and springs,
26:58
and treasures and [every kind of] honourable position;
26:59
Thus it was; and We made the Children of Isrā’īl inheritors of such things.
26:60
So they pursued them at sunrise.1
26:61
And when the two groups saw each other, the people of Mūsā said: “We are sure to be overtaken.”
26:62
[Mūsā] said: “Never! My Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!”
26:63
So We revealed to Mūsā: “Strike the sea with you rod!” So it got divided, and each separate part became like a huge mountain.
26:64
And We made the other [party] approach thither.
26:65
And We delivered Mūsā and all who were with him;
26:66
Then We drowned the others.
26:67
Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
26:68
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:69
And rehearse to them the story of Ibrāhīm.1
26:70
[Remember] when he said to his father and his people: “What worship you?”
26:71
They said: “We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them.”
26:72
He said: “Do they hear you when you call [them]?
26:73
“Or do you good or harm?”
26:74
They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus.”
26:75
He said: “Do you then think over what you have been worshipping,
26:76
“you and your ancient fathers?
26:77
“For, they are enemies to me, except the Sustainer of the Worlds,
26:78
“who created me and, therefore, He will [surely] guide me,
26:79
“who gives me food and drink,
26:80
“and when I fall ill, it is He who cures me,
26:81
“who causes me to die, and then will raise me [again],
26:82
“and who, I hope, will forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgement.
26:83
“O My Lord! Bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous,
26:84
“and grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the later [generations],1
26:85
“and make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Bliss,
26:86
“and forgive my father, for he is among the misguided,
26:87
“and let me not be disgraced on the Day when [people] will be raised up,
26:88
“the Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,
26:89
“except one who brings to Allāh a blame-free [pure] heart.”
26:90
[On the Day of Judgement] Paradise will be brought close to the [God‐]fearing,
26:91
and to those straying [in evil], the Fire [Hell] will be placed in full view;
26:92
and it shall be said to them: “Where are those [gods] you worshipped
26:93
besides Allāh? Can they help you [now] or help themselves?”
26:94
So they will be thrown headlong into it [Fire] — they and those straying [in evil],
26:95
and the whole army of Iblīs [the Shayṭān] together.
26:96
They will say therein amid their [mutual] bickering:
26:97
“By Allāh, we were truly in deviation manifest,
26:98
“When we held you [false gods] as equals with the Lord of the Worlds;
26:99
“and none misguided us but those who were given to sin;
26:100
“Now, we have no intercessors [for us],
26:101
“Nor [even] a single intimate friend,
26:102
“If only we had a chance of return, so we would truly be of those who believe!”
26:103
Verily, in this is a Sign but most of them did not believe.1
26:104
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:105
The people of Nūḥ disbelieved the Messengers.
26:106
[Remember] when their brother Nūḥ said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:107
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger,
26:108
“so fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:109
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord-of-the-Worlds:
26:110
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.”
26:111
They said: “Shall we believe in you when it is the lowest [of people] that follow you?”
26:112
He said: “And what do I know as to what they used to do?
26:113
“Their account is only with my Lord, if you could only perceive.1
26:114
“I am not one to drive away those who believe.
26:115
“I am only a manifest warner.”
26:116
They said: “If you desist not, O Nūḥ, you shall be stoned [to death].
26:117
He said: “O My Lord! Truly my people have disbelieved me.
26:118
“So judge you, then, between me and them clearly, and save me and the Believers who are with me.”
26:119
So We saved him and those with him, in the Ark filled [with all creatures].
26:120
Thereafter, We drowned those who remained behind.
26:121
Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:122
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:123
The ‘Ād1[people] disbelieved the Messengers.
26:124
[Remember] when their brother Hūd1said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:125
“I am to you a Messenger worthy of trust:
26:126
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:127
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:128
“Do you uselessly build a landmark on every high place?
26:129
“And you secure for yourselves [skillful] edifices in the hope of achieving eternity?
26:130
“And when you punish, you punish like tyrants.
26:131
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:132
“And fear Him who has bestowed on you all that you know.
26:133
“He has bestowed on you cattle and sons,
26:134
“and orchards and springs.
26:135
“Truly, I fear for you the punishment of a Great Day.”
26:136
They said: “It is the same to us whether you preach to us or be not among [our] preachers!
26:137
“This is no other than the customary character of the ancients,1
26:138
“And we are not going to be punished.”
26:139
So they disbelieved him; [as a result] We destroyed them. Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:140
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:141
The Thamūd1[people] disbelieved the Messengers.
26:142
[Remember] when their brother Ṣāliḥ1said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:143
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:144
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:145
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: verily, my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:146
“Will you be left secure, in [the enjoyment of] all that you have here?
26:147
“In orchards and springs,
26:148
“and in crops and date-palms with spathes of ripe fruit?
26:149
“And you carve houses out of mountains with skill.1
26:150
“So fear Allāh and obey me;
26:151
“And obey not the bidding of those who exceeded the [just] limits,
26:152
“who make mischief in the land, and make no reform.”
26:153
They said: “You are only one of the bewitched!
26:154
“You are no more than a human like us: so bring us a Sign,1if you tell the truth!”
26:155
He said: “Here is [the Sign]: a she-camel.1She has a right of watering, and you have a right of watering on a day, appointed [for both].
26:156
“Touch her [she-camel] not with harm, lest the punishment of a Great Day seize you.”
26:157
But they slaughtered her: thereafter they became full of regrets.
26:158
So the punishment seized them. Verily, in that is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:159
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty,1the Most-Merciful.
26:160
The people of Lūṭ1disbelieved the Messengers.
26:161
[Remember] when their brother Lūṭ said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:162
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:163
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:164
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:165
“Of all the creatures in the world, do you approach males?1
26:166
“and you shun those whom Allāh has created for you to be your mates? Nay, you are a people transgressing [all limits]!”
26:167
They said: “If you desist not, O Lūt! You will assuredly be expelled!”
26:168
He said: “I do [utterly] detest your deeds.
26:169
“O My Lord! Deliver me and my family from such things as they do!”
26:170
So We delivered him and all his family,
26:171
except an old woman who was among those who perished.
26:172
Then the rest We destroyed utterly.
26:173
We rained down on them a shower [of stones]: and evil was the shower on those who were warned [but heeded not]!
26:174
Verily, in this is a Sign: But most of them did not believe.
26:175
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:176
The People of the Wood1disbelieved the Messengers.
26:177
[Remember] when Shu‘ayb1said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:178
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:179
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:180
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:181
“Give just measure, and cause no loss [to others by fraud].
26:182
“And weigh with scales, upright.
26:183
“And cheat not people out of things due to them, nor do evil in the land, making mischief.
26:184
“And fear Him who created you and [who created] the generations before [you].”
26:185
They said: “You are only one of those utterly bewitched!
26:186
“You are but a human like us, and indeed we think you are one of the liars!
26:187
“So cause pieces of the sky to fall on us, if you are one of the truthful!”
26:188
He said: “My Lord knows best what you do.”
26:189
So they disbelieved him. So, the punishment of the day of overshadowing clouds1seized them, and that was the punishment of a Great Day.
26:190
Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:191
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:192
Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:
26:193
With it came down the Faithful Spirit1
26:194
to your heart so that you may be one of the warners,
26:195
in a clear Arabic tongue.
26:196
Without doubt it is [announced] in the [revealed] Scriptures of the ancient peoples.1
26:197
Is it not an [enough] Sign for them that the scholars of the Children of Isrā’īl knew it [as true]?
26:198
Had We revealed it to some of the non-Arabs,
26:199
and had he recited it to them [Arabs], they would not have believed in it.1
26:200
Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners,
26:201
they will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment,
26:202
which will visit them all of a sudden, while they perceive it not;
26:203
Then they will say: “Shall we be respited?”
26:204
Do they [still] ask for Our punishment to be hastened on?
26:205
See you: if We do let them enjoy [this life] for a few [more] years,
26:206
[and] then there comes to them at length the [punishment] which they were promised!
26:207
It will profit them not the enjoyment they were given.
26:208
Never did We destroy a town but [only] after it had its warners,
26:209
by way of a reminder; and We never are wrongdoers.
26:210
The satans did not bring it down:
26:211
It is not proper for them, nor is it in their power.
26:212
Indeed they [satans] are banished from hearing it.
26:213
So call not on any other god alongwith Allāh, because [if you do] you will be among those who will be punished.
26:214
And warn your nearest relatives,
26:215
and lower your wing1to the Believers who follow you.
26:216
But if they disobey you, say: “I am free1from what you do!”
26:217
And put your trust in the Mighty, the Most-Merciful,
26:218
who sees you when you stand forth [in prayer],
26:219
and your movements among those who prostrate themselves,
26:220
for He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
26:221
Shall I inform you [O People!], on whom it is that the satans descend?
26:222
They descend on every liar, sinner.
26:223
They listen eagerly,1and most of them are liars.
26:224
And the poets,1it is those straying [in evil], who follow them:
26:225
See you not that they [poets] wander distracted in every valley?
26:226
And that they say what they practice not?
26:227
except those who believe, work righteousness, engage in the remembrance of Allāh, and defend themselves after they were wronged. And soon will the wrongdoers know what vicissitude will overtake them!
