The Criterion

Bismillah
25:1
Exalted is He who sent down the Criterion1to His servant that he may be a warner to [people of] all worlds;
25:2
the One to whom belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth: no son has He begotten, nor has He a partner in the Sovereignty. It is He who created all things, and measured each of them in due proportion.
25:3
[Yet] have they taken, besides Him, gods that can create nothing but are themselves created; that have no control over harm or benefit to themselves nor can they control Death nor Life nor Resurrection.
25:4
But the Rejecters [of the Message] said: “This [Message] is nothing but a lie which he [the Prophet] has forged, and others1have helped him at it.” In truth, it is they who have committed wrong and lied.
25:5
And they said: “[These verses are] fables of the ancients, which he has caused to be written [for him]: and these are read to him morning and evening.”
25:6
Say [O Prophet]: “It [the Qur’ān] is sent down by Him who knows the secrets [that are] in the heavens and on the earth. Verily, He is Most-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.”
25:7
And they said: “What sort of a Messenger is this, who eats food and walks through the markets? Why has not an angel been sent down to him to be a warner along with him?
25:8
“Or [why] has not a treasure been sent down to him, or why has he [not] an orchard to eat from it [its fruits]?” The wrongdoers say: “You follow none other than a man bewitched.”
25:9
See [O Prophet] what kinds of parables they make for you! So they have gone astray, and never a way will they be able to find!
25:10
Exalted is He who, if that were His will, could give you better [things] than those: gardens beneath which rivers flow; and He could give you palaces [secure to dwell in].
25:11
Nay they [the Rejecters] disbelieve the Hour [of the Judgement]. We have prepared a blazing Fire for such as disbelieve the Hour,
25:12
when it [Fire] sees them from a place far off, they will hear its fury and its raging sigh.
25:13
And when they will be cast, bound together, into a constricted place therein, they will plead for [their] destruction there and then!
25:14
[They will be told:] “This day plead not for a single destruction, but plead for many destructions!”
25:15
Say [O Prophet]: “Is that the best, or the Paradise of Eternity, promised to the [God‐]fearing? For them, that is a reward and a [final] destination.
25:16
“For them, therein will be all that they wish for: they will dwell [therein] forever — a promise binding upon your Lord.”
25:17
The Day He [Allāh] will gather them together as well as those whom they worshipped besides Allāh, He will ask: “Was it you who led astray these servants1of Mine, or did they stray from the Path [themselves]?”
25:18
They will say: “Glory to You! Not proper was it for us that we should take others for guardians besides You: But You did bestow on them and their fathers good things [of life] until they forgot the [divine] Message: for they were a people destined for destruction.”
25:19
[Allāh will say]: “They have indeed repudiated what you say: so you cannot avert [your penalty] nor [get any] help.” And whoever among you did wrong, him shall We cause to taste of a great punishment.
25:20
And the Messengers whom We sent before you were all [men] who ate food and walked through the markets. We have made some of you as a trial for others: Will you have patience? For Allāh is All-Seeing.
25:21
Those who do not hope to meet Us [for Judgement] say: “Why are not the angels sent down to us, or [why] do we not see our Lord?” Indeed, they have an arrogant conceit of themselves, and mighty is their disdain for disobedience!
25:22
The Day they will see the angels, no good tidings will there be to the sinners that Day. The [angels] will say: “[Good tidings] is rigorously denied [to you]!”
25:23
And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did [in this life], and We shall make such deeds as floating dust scattered about.
25:24
The people of Paradise will be well, that Day, in their abode, and will have the fairest resting place.
25:25
That Day the heaven shall be rent asunder with clouds, and angels shall be sent down, descending [in ranks],
25:26
That Day, the Sovereignty as of right shall be [wholly] for the Most-Gracious: and it will be a Day of difficulty for the Rejecters [of Truth].
25:27
That Day the wrongdoer will bite at his hands, and will say, “Oh! Would that I had followed a [straight] path with the Messenger!
25:28
“Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had not taken such a one for a close friend!
25:29
“He did lead me away from the Message [of Allāh] after it had come to me! Ah! The Shayṭān is but a forsaker to Man!”1
25:30
The Messenger will say [that Day]: “O My Lord! Truly my people deserted this Qur’ān.”1
25:31
Thus have We made for every Prophet an enemy among the sinners:1but enough is your Lord as a Guide and Helper.
25:32
Those who reject [the Message] say: “Why is not the Qur’ān revealed to him all at once? Thus [is it revealed] so that We may strengthen [O Prophet] your heart thereby, and We have rehearsed it to you [slowly] in stages.
25:33
And no issue do they bring to you but We reveal to you the Truth and the best explanation [thereof].
25:34
Those who will be driven to Hell walking on their faces.1They will be in an evil place, and on a path most astray.
25:35
[Before this,] We gave Mūsā1the Scripture, and appointed his brother Hārūn2with him as [his] supporter;
25:36
and We commanded [them, saying:] “Go you both to the people who have disbelieved Our Signs.” So We visited them [the Rejecters] with utter destruction.
25:37
And [remember] the people of Nūḥ,1when they disacknowledged the Messengers, We drowned them, and We made them as a Sign for Mankind; and We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
25:38
As also [remember] the ‘Ād1and the Thamūd,2and the people of the Well,3and many a generation between them.
25:39
We made each [of these who disbelieved in their Messengers] as examples, and each of them We smashed to utter destruction [for their sins].
25:40
And the [Rejecters] indeed have passed by the town on which was rained a shower of evil: did they not then see it [with their own eyes1]? But they expected not to be raised again.
25:41
When they see you, they treat you no otherwise than in mockery [saying]: “Is this the one whom Allāh has sent as a Messenger?
25:42
“He almost misled us indeed from our gods, had it not been that we patiently endured with them!” Soon will they know when they see the Punishment: who it is that is most misled in Path!
25:43
See you such a one as takes for his god his whims? Would you [then] be a guardian for him?
25:44
Or think you that most of them listen or understand? They are but like cattle; nay, they are farther astray from the Path.
25:45
Have you not seen how your Lord does stretch the shadow! If He willed, He could have made it stationary! Then We made the Sun its guide;
25:46
Then We drew it in towards Ourselves, a contraction by easy stages.1
25:47
And He it is who made the Night as a robe for you and Sleep as time for rest, and made the Day as a time for going out [to work].
25:48
And He it is who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, preceding His Mercy. And We send down purifying water from the sky,
25:49
that with it We give life to a dead land, and irrigate it and We give it to drink to the cattle and people We have created in great numbers.
25:50
And We have distributed the [water] amongst them, in order that they may be mindful but most people are adamant to be ungrateful.
25:51
Had it been Our Will, We could have sent a warner to every town.
25:52
Therefore, [O Prophet] obey not the Rejecters, but strive with it [the Qur’ān] against them with utmost strenuousness.
25:53
It is He who has mixed the two bodies of flowing water:1one palatable and sweet, and the other salty and bitter; and He has made a barrier between them, a partition that is not to be passed.
25:54
It is He who has created Man from water:1then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for your Lord is All-Powerful.
25:55
Yet do they worship, besides Allāh, things that can neither profit them nor harm them: and the Rejecter [of Faith] is a helper [of Evil] against his [own] Lord!
25:56
We sent you [O Prophet] only as a proclaimer of glad tidings and as a warner.
25:57
Say: “No remuneration do I ask of you for it [for conveying the Message] but this: Let whoever wishes, take a [straight] Path to his Lord:”
25:58
And put you trust in the Ever-Living who dies not; and celebrate His praise. And enough is He to minutely know the sins of His servants;1
25:59
He who created the heavens and the earth and all that is in-between, in six days.1Then He established Himself on the Throne:2[He is Allāh] the Most-Gracious. Ask you, then, about Him of any acquainted [with such things].
25:60
When it is said to them [Rejecters], “Worship you the Most-Gracious!;” they say, “And what is [Allāh] the Most-Gracious? Shall we worship that which you command us?” And it increased them in aversion.
25:61
Exalted is He who made Constellations in the skies, and placed therein a Lamp [Sun] and a Moon giving light;
25:62
And it is He who made the Night and the Day follow each other: for such as desire to be mindful or to show their gratitude [to Allāh].
25:63
And the servants of [Allāh] the Most-Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace [on you]!;”
25:64
those who spend nights prostrating and standing to their Lord.
25:65
Those who say, “Our Lord! Avert from us the Punishment of Hell, for its punishment is indeed an affliction grievous,
25:66
“Evil indeed is it as an abode, and as a place to stay.”
25:67
[The servants of Allāh are] those who, when they spend, are not extravagant nor miserly, but hold a just [balance] between these [extremes];
25:68
they are the ones who invoke not, with Allāh, any other god, nor slay such life as Allāh has made sacred except justly, nor commit adultery. And any who does this [not only will] meet [his] punishment,
25:69
[but] the punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be doubled for him, and he will dwell therein forever in ignominy,
25:70
except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds [in this life], for Allāh will change their sins into good [rewards], and Allāh is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful,
25:71
and whoever repents and does good [deeds] has truly turned to Allāh in repentance;
25:72
those who give not false witness, and, if they pass by futility, they pass by it with honourable [avoidance];
25:73
those who, when they are reminded of the Signs of their Lord, stoop not down1at them as if they were deaf or blind;
25:74
and those who pray, “Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us [the grace] to lead the [God‐]fearing!”
25:75
Those are the ones who will be rewarded with the highest place1[in Paradise], because of their enduring patiently: Therein shall they be met with salutation and greeting,
25:76
dwelling therein forever — how beautiful an abode and a place of stay!
25:77
[O Prophet] say [to the Rejecters]: “My Lord does not concern Himself with you but for your prayer to Him: You have indeed disbelieved [His Message], and soon will come the inevitable [punishment]!”
