The Dawn

Bismillah
89:1
By the Dawn;1
89:2
and the Ten Nights;1
89:3
and the Even and Odd [contrasted];1
89:4
and the Night when it passes.
89:5
Is there [not] in these an adjuration for one who understands?
89:6
See you not how your Lord dealt with the ‘Ād [people],1
89:7
of the [town of] Iram,1the one with lofty pillars,
89:8
the like of which were not created in [all] the land?
89:9
And [how He dealt] with the Thamūd1[people], who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley?
89:10
And with the Pharaoh,1Lord of Stakes?
89:11
[All] these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,
89:12
and heaped therein mischief [on mischief].
89:13
Therefore, your Lord flogged them with [diverse] punishments.
89:14
Verily, your Lord is [ever] Watchful.
89:15
Now, as for Man, when his Lord tests him, giving him honour and gifts, says he [puffed up], “My Lord has honoured me.”
89:16
But when He [Allāh] tests him, restricting his sustenance for him, says he [in despair], “My Lord has humiliated me!”
89:17
Nay! But you honour not the orphan!
89:18
Nor do you encourage one another to feed the poor!
89:19
And you devour inheritance1with greed,
89:20
And you love wealth with inordinate lust!
89:21
Nay! When the earth is pounded to smithereens,
89:22
And your Lord will come with the angels, rank upon rank,
89:23
and Hell, that Day, will be brought [face to face]. On that Day will Man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?
89:24
He will say: “Ah! Would that I had sent forth [good deeds for my [future] life!”
89:25
For, that Day, His punishment will be such as none [else] can inflict,
89:26
And His fetters will be such as none [other] can bind with.
89:27
[The righteous soul will be told:] “O [you] the satisfied soul!
89:28
“Return to your Lord, well-pleased (yourself), and well-pleased by Him!
89:29
“So, enter, then, the ranks of My servants!1
89:30
“And, enter My Paradise!”
