سُورَةُ غَافِرٍ
The Forgiver
40:1
حمٓ ١
Ḥā. Mīm.1
40:2
تَنزِيلُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡعَلِيمِ ٢
The revelation of [this] Book is from Allāh, the Mighty, the-All-Knowing,
40:3
غَافِرِ ٱلذَّنۢبِ وَقَابِلِ ٱلتَّوۡبِ شَدِيدِ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ذِي ٱلطَّوۡلِۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ إِلَيۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ ٣
the Forgiver-of-Sins, the Acceptor-of-Repentance, the Severe-in-Punishment, and the All-Bountiful. There is no god but He. To Him is the Final Return.
40:4
مَا يُجَٰدِلُ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فَلَا يَغۡرُرۡكَ تَقَلُّبُهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ ٤
None disputes the Signs of Allāh but the Rejecters. So let not, then, their strutting about through the land deceive you [O Prophet]!
40:5
كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٖ وَٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ وَهَمَّتۡ كُلُّ أُمَّةِۭ بِرَسُولِهِمۡ لِيَأۡخُذُوهُۖ وَجَٰدَلُواْ بِٱلۡبَٰطِلِ لِيُدۡحِضُواْ بِهِ ٱلۡحَقَّ فَأَخَذۡتُهُمۡۖ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ ٥
Before them, the people of Nūḥ disbelieved [the Signs] — and the Confederates1after them — and every people plotted against their Prophet to seize him,2and disputed by means of vanity in order to obliterate the Truth: So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My Requital!
40:6
وَكَذَٰلِكَ حَقَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَنَّهُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ٦
Thus was the Word of your Lord proved true against the Rejecters;1that, truly, they are people of the Fire!
40:7
ٱلَّذِينَ يَحۡمِلُونَ ٱلۡعَرۡشَ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥ يُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَيُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَيَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ رَبَّنَا وَسِعۡتَ كُلَّ شَيۡءٖ رَّحۡمَةٗ وَعِلۡمٗا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لِلَّذِينَ تَابُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ سَبِيلَكَ وَقِهِمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٧
The [angels] who bear the Throne1[of Allāh] and those around it sing Glory and Praise to their Lord, believe in Him; and implore Forgiveness for those who believe [saying]: “Our Lord! Your Mercy and Knowledge embrace everything. So forgive those who turned in repentance, and followed Your Path; and save them from the Punishment of the Blazing Fire!
40:8
رَبَّنَا وَأَدۡخِلۡهُمۡ جَنَّٰتِ عَدۡنٍ ٱلَّتِي وَعَدتَّهُمۡ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنۡ ءَابَآئِهِمۡ وَأَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ وَذُرِّيَّٰتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٨
“And our Lord, grant them entry into the Gardens of Eternity, which you have promised to them, and to the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their posterity! For You are the Mighty, the Most-Wise.
40:9
وَقِهِمُ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِۚ وَمَن تَقِ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ يَوۡمَئِذٖ فَقَدۡ رَحِمۡتَهُۥۚ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ ٩
“And save them from [all] sins; and any whom You do save from sins that Day — on them will You have indeed bestowed Mercy: and that truly will be the Supreme Success.”
40:10
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُنَادَوۡنَ لَمَقۡتُ ٱللَّهِ أَكۡبَرُ مِن مَّقۡتِكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡ إِذۡ تُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلۡإِيمَٰنِ فَتَكۡفُرُونَ ١٠
The Rejecters will be addressed [from afar, on the Day of Judgement]: “Greater is the contempt of Allāh for you than [is] your contempt for yourselves,1seeing that you were called to the Faith and you used to reject.”
40:11
قَالُواْ رَبَّنَآ أَمَتَّنَا ٱثۡنَتَيۡنِ وَأَحۡيَيۡتَنَا ٱثۡنَتَيۡنِ فَٱعۡتَرَفۡنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا فَهَلۡ إِلَىٰ خُرُوجٖ مِّن سَبِيلٖ ١١
They will say: “Our Lord! Twice have You made us to die, and twice have You given us life!1Now we have confessed to our sins: Is there any way out [of this]?”
40:12
ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّهُۥٓ إِذَا دُعِيَ ٱللَّهُ وَحۡدَهُۥ كَفَرۡتُمۡۖ وَإِن يُشۡرَكۡ بِهِۦ تُؤۡمِنُواْۚ فَٱلۡحُكۡمُ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡعَلِيِّ ٱلۡكَبِيرِ ١٢
[The answer will be:] “This is because, when Allāh was invoked as the Only [object of worship], you did reject [Faith], but when partners were associated with Him, you believed! So, the Command [today] is with Allāh, the Most-High, the Most-Great!”
40:13
هُوَ ٱلَّذِي يُرِيكُمۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُنَزِّلُ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزۡقٗاۚ وَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ إِلَّا مَن يُنِيبُ ١٣
He it is who shows you His Signs, and sends down Sustenance for you from the sky: but only those receive admonition who turn [to Allāh, in repentance].
40:14
فَٱدۡعُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ ١٤
So call you upon Allāh with sincere devotion to Him, even though the Rejecters may hate it.
40:15
رَفِيعُ ٱلدَّرَجَٰتِ ذُو ٱلۡعَرۡشِ يُلۡقِي ٱلرُّوحَ مِنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ لِيُنذِرَ يَوۡمَ ٱلتَّلَاقِ ١٥
Exalted is He in His attributes. [He is] the Lord-of-the-Throne:1by His Command does He send the Revelation2to any of His servants3He pleases, that he may warn [people] of the Day of Mutual Meeting,4
40:16
يَوۡمَ هُم بَٰرِزُونَۖ لَا يَخۡفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِنۡهُمۡ شَيۡءٞۚ لِّمَنِ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡوَٰحِدِ ٱلۡقَهَّارِ ١٦
the Day whereon they will [all] come forth stark naked:1not a single thing concerning them will be hidden from Allāh. [A voice will cry that Day:] Whose will be the Sovereignty that Day? [The answer will be:] That of Allāh, the Supreme Subduer!2
40:17
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ تُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡۚ لَا ظُلۡمَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ١٧
That Day will every soul be requited for what it earned; no wrongdoing will be done that Day. Verily, Allāh is Swift in taking account.
40:18
وَأَنذِرۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡأٓزِفَةِ إِذِ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ لَدَى ٱلۡحَنَاجِرِ كَٰظِمِينَۚ مَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِنۡ حَمِيمٖ وَلَا شَفِيعٖ يُطَاعُ ١٨
And warn them of the Day that is [ever] drawing closer,1when the hearts will [come] right up to the throats, while they repress their grief; no intimate friend nor intercessor, who could be obeyed, will the wrongdoers have.
40:19
يَعۡلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلۡأَعۡيُنِ وَمَا تُخۡفِي ٱلصُّدُورُ ١٩
[Allāh] knows the treachery of the eyes,1and all that the hearts [of people] conceal.
40:20
وَٱللَّهُ يَقۡضِي بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا يَقۡضُونَ بِشَيۡءٍۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡبَصِيرُ ٢٠
And Allāh judges with Truth: while those, whom [people] invoke besides Him, are not [in a position] to judge at all. Verily, it is Allāh who is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
40:21
أَوَلَمۡ يَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَيَنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُواْ هُمۡ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗ وَءَاثَارٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٖ ٢١
Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the fate of those before them? Those were even superior to these in strength and in the traces [they have left behind] in the land: But Allāh did call them to account for their sins, and none had they to protect them against Allāh.
40:22
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَانَت تَّأۡتِيهِمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ فَكَفَرُواْ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ قَوِيّٞ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ٢٢
That was because there came to them their Messengers with Clear [Signs], but they rejected [them]: So Allāh called them to account: for He is Mighty, Severe-in-Punishment.
40:23
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٍ ٢٣
Of old, We sent Mūsā1with Our Signs and an Authority manifest,
40:24
إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَهَٰمَٰنَ وَقَٰرُونَ فَقَالُواْ سَٰحِرٞ كَذَّابٞ ٢٤
to the Pharaoh,1Hāmān,2and Qārūn;3but they called [him] “a magician telling utter lies!”
40:25
فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ مِنۡ عِندِنَا قَالُواْ ٱقۡتُلُوٓاْ أَبۡنَآءَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُۥ وَٱسۡتَحۡيُواْ نِسَآءَهُمۡۚ وَمَا كَيۡدُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَٰلٖ ٢٥
Now, when he [Mūsā] brought them the Truth from Us, they said, “Slay the sons of those who believe with him, and keep alive their females.” But the plot of Rejecters [always ends] in nothing but deviation.
40:26
وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ذَرُونِيٓ أَقۡتُلۡ مُوسَىٰ وَلۡيَدۡعُ رَبَّهُۥٓۖ إِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمۡ أَوۡ أَن يُظۡهِرَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ٱلۡفَسَادَ ٢٦
Said the Pharaoh, “Leave me to slay Mūsā; and let him call on his Lord! What I fear is lest he should change your religion, or lest he should cause mischief to appear in the land!”
40:27
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّي عُذۡتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُم مِّن كُلِّ مُتَكَبِّرٖ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ٢٧
Mūsā said: “I have indeed taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who believes not in the Day of Judgement!”
40:28
وَقَالَ رَجُلٞ مُّؤۡمِنٞ مِّنۡ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ يَكۡتُمُ إِيمَٰنَهُۥٓ أَتَقۡتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ ٱللَّهُ وَقَدۡ جَآءَكُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ وَإِن يَكُ كَٰذِبٗا فَعَلَيۡهِ كَذِبُهُۥۖ وَإِن يَكُ صَادِقٗا يُصِبۡكُم بَعۡضُ ٱلَّذِي يَعِدُكُمۡۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهۡدِي مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفٞ كَذَّابٞ ٢٨
A believing man, from among the people of the Pharaoh who had concealed his faith, said: “Will you slay a man because he says, ‘My Lord is Allāh’ when he has indeed come to you with Clear [Signs] from your Lord? And if he be a liar, on him is [the sin of] his lie; but, if he is telling the Truth, then will fall on you some of the [calamity] of which he warns you about: truly Allāh guides not one who exceeds the [just] limits and is an utter liar!
40:29
يَٰقَوۡمِ لَكُمُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ ظَٰهِرِينَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَمَن يَنصُرُنَا مِنۢ بَأۡسِ ٱللَّهِ إِن جَآءَنَاۚ قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ مَآ أُرِيكُمۡ إِلَّا مَآ أَرَىٰ وَمَآ أَهۡدِيكُمۡ إِلَّا سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ٢٩
“O My People! You have the authority today, you have the upper hand in the land: but who will help us from the Punishment of Allāh, should it befall us?” The Pharaoh said: “I but point out to you that which I see [myself]; nor do I guide you but to the Right Path!”
40:30
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِيٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيۡكُم مِّثۡلَ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ ٣٠
Said the believing man, “O My People! Truly, I do fear for you something like the Day [of disaster] of the Confederates [in sin]!1
40:31
مِثۡلَ دَأۡبِ قَوۡمِ نُوحٖ وَعَادٖ وَثَمُودَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۚ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلۡمٗا لِّلۡعِبَادِ ٣١
“Something like the fate of the People of Nūḥ,1the ‘Ād,2and the Thamūd,3and those who came after them. Allāh never wishes injustice to His servants.4
40:32
وَيَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلتَّنَادِ ٣٢
“And O My People! I fear for you the Day when there will be mutual calling [and wailing],1
40:33
يَوۡمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدۡبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ عَاصِمٖۗ وَمَن يُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادٖ ٣٣
“a Day when you shall turn your backs and flee: But no defender shall you have from Allāh. Any whom Allāh leaves to stray, there is none to guide.
40:34
وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبۡلُ بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا زِلۡتُمۡ فِي شَكّٖ مِّمَّا جَآءَكُم بِهِۦۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلۡتُمۡ لَن يَبۡعَثَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ رَسُولٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفٞ مُّرۡتَابٌ ٣٤
“And to you there came Yūsuf1in times gone by, with Clear [Signs], but you ceased not to doubt of the [Message] which he had brought: at length, when he died, you said: ‘No Messenger will Allāh send after him.’ Thus does Allāh leave to stray such as is a transgressor,2doubting,
40:35
ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ سُلۡطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمۡۖ كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلۡبِ مُتَكَبِّرٖ جَبَّارٖ ٣٥
“[such] as dispute about the Signs of Allāh, without any authority that has reached them. Very contemptible [is such conduct] in the sight of Allāh and of the Believers. Thus does Allāh seal up the heart of every arrogant tyrant.”
40:36
وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ يَٰهَٰمَٰنُ ٱبۡنِ لِي صَرۡحٗا لَّعَلِّيٓ أَبۡلُغُ ٱلۡأَسۡبَٰبَ ٣٦
The Pharaoh said: “O Hāmān!1Build for me a lofty edifice, that I may attain the ways and means,
40:37
أَسۡبَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّي لَأَظُنُّهُۥ كَٰذِبٗاۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ سُوٓءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَصُدَّ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِۚ وَمَا كَيۡدُ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِلَّا فِي تَبَابٖ ٣٧
“the ways and means of [reaching] the heavens, so that I may look up to the Allāh of Mūsā: But surely, I think [Mūsā] is a liar!” Thus was made fascinating, in the Pharaoh’s eyes, his evil deeds, and he was hindered from the Path [of Allāh]. And the plot of the Pharaoh led to nothing but perdition [for him and his people].
40:38
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِيٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوۡمِ ٱتَّبِعُونِ أَهۡدِكُمۡ سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ٣٨
The man, who believed, said further: “O My People! Follow me: I will lead you to the Path of Righteousness,
40:39
يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَتَٰعٞ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ هِيَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ ٣٩
“O My People! This present life is nothing but [temporary] enjoyment: it is the Hereafter that is the Home that will last.
40:40
مَنۡ عَمِلَ سَيِّئَةٗ فَلَا يُجۡزَىٰٓ إِلَّا مِثۡلَهَاۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحٗا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يَدۡخُلُونَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ يُرۡزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابٖ ٤٠
“He that does evil will not be requited but by the like thereof: and he that does righteous deeds, whether man or woman and is a believer, such will enter Paradise: therein will they have abundant sustenance without measure.
40:41
وَيَٰقَوۡمِ مَا لِيٓ أَدۡعُوكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلنَّجَوٰةِ وَتَدۡعُونَنِيٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ٤١
“And O My People! How [strange] it is for me to call you to Salvation while you call me to the Fire!
40:42
تَدۡعُونَنِي لِأَكۡفُرَ بِٱللَّهِ وَأُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ مَا لَيۡسَ لِي بِهِۦ عِلۡمٞ وَأَنَا۠ أَدۡعُوكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡغَفَّٰرِ ٤٢
“You do call upon me to reject Allāh, and to join with Him partners of whom I have no knowledge; while I call you to the Mighty, the Most-Forgiving!
40:43
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّمَا تَدۡعُونَنِيٓ إِلَيۡهِ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَعۡوَةٞ فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَلَا فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ مَرَدَّنَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ٤٣
“Without doubt, you do call me to one who has no claim to calling, whether in this world or in the Hereafter.1Our Return will be to Allāh; and the Transgressors2will be the people of the Fire!
40:44
فَسَتَذۡكُرُونَ مَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمۡۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمۡرِيٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَصِيرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ ٤٤
“Soon will you remember what I say to you [now]. My [own] affair I commit to Allāh: for Allāh [ever] watches over [His] servants.”
40:45
فَوَقَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ سَيِّـَٔاتِ مَا مَكَرُواْۖ وَحَاقَ بِـَٔالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ سُوٓءُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٤٥
So Allāh saved him from the evil that they plotted [against him], and the brunt of the Punishment overwhelmed the people of the Pharaoh.
40:46
ٱلنَّارُ يُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَيۡهَا غُدُوّٗا وَعَشِيّٗاۖ وَيَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡخِلُوٓاْ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ أَشَدَّ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٤٦
In front of the Fire will they be brought, morning and evening: And [the sentence will be] on the Day when the Hour1comes to pass [when it will be said]: “Throw the People of the Pharaoh into the severest Punishment!”
40:47
وَإِذۡ يَتَحَآجُّونَ فِي ٱلنَّارِ فَيَقُولُ ٱلضُّعَفَٰٓؤُاْ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوٓاْ إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمۡ تَبَعٗا فَهَلۡ أَنتُم مُّغۡنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِيبٗا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ ٤٧
Behold, they will dispute with each other in the Fire. The weak ones [who followed] will say to those who had been arrogant, “We only followed you: can you then take [on yourselves] from us some share of the Fire?
40:48
قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوٓاْ إِنَّا كُلّٞ فِيهَآ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدۡ حَكَمَ بَيۡنَ ٱلۡعِبَادِ ٤٨
Those who had been arrogant will say: “We are all together in this [Fire]! Truly, Allāh has judged between [His] servants!”1
40:49
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي ٱلنَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ٱدۡعُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ يُخَفِّفۡ عَنَّا يَوۡمٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٤٩
Those in the Fire will say to the Keepers of Hell: “Pray to your Lord to lighten us the Punishment for a day [at least]!”
40:50
قَالُوٓاْ أَوَلَمۡ تَكُ تَأۡتِيكُمۡ رُسُلُكُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِۖ قَالُواْ بَلَىٰۚ قَالُواْ فَٱدۡعُواْۗ وَمَا دُعَٰٓؤُاْ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَٰلٍ ٥٠
They will reply: “Did there not come to you, your Messengers with Clear Signs?” They will say, “Yes!” They will reply, “Then pray [as you like]! But the Prayer of the Rejecters [of Faith] is nothing but [futile wandering] in [mazes of] deviation!”
40:51
إِنَّا لَنَنصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَيَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلۡأَشۡهَٰدُ ٥١
We will, without doubt, help Our Messengers1and those who believe, [both] in this world’s life and on the Day when the witnesses2will stand forth,
40:52
يَوۡمَ لَا يَنفَعُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ مَعۡذِرَتُهُمۡۖ وَلَهُمُ ٱللَّعۡنَةُ وَلَهُمۡ سُوٓءُ ٱلدَّارِ ٥٢
the Day when excuse will not profit the wrongdoers, they will [only] have the Curse and for them will be the Home of Misery.
40:53
وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَا بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٥٣
We did aforetime give Mūsā the Guidance, and We gave the Scripture in inheritance to the Children of Isrā’īl,
40:54
هُدٗى وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ ٥٤
[as] a Guide and a Reminder to the people of understanding.
40:55
فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَٰرِ ٥٥
So, endure patiently: For the Promise of Allāh is true: and ask forgiveness for your sins, and celebrate the Praises of your Lord in the evening and in the morning.
40:56
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ سُلۡطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمۡۙ إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمۡ إِلَّا كِبۡرٞ مَّا هُم بِبَٰلِغِيهِۚ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡبَصِيرُ ٥٦
Those who dispute about the Signs of Allāh without any authority bestowed on them; there is nothing in their breasts but arrogance,1which they shall never attain to: So seek refuge, then, in Allāh: It is He who is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
40:57
لَخَلۡقُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ خَلۡقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ٥٧
Assuredly, the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater [task] than the creation of humans: yet most people know not.
40:58
وَمَا يَسۡتَوِي ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ وَٱلۡبَصِيرُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَلَا ٱلۡمُسِيٓءُۚ قَلِيلٗا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ ٥٨
Not equal are the blind and the clear-eyed: Nor are [equal] those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and those who do evil. Little do you remember by admonition!
40:59
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَأٓتِيَةٞ لَّا رَيۡبَ فِيهَا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٥٩
The Hour1will certainly come: Therein is no doubt: Yet most people believe not.
40:60
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدۡعُونِيٓ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠
And your Lord said, “Call on Me; I will answer your [Prayer]: But those who are too arrogant to worship Me will surely enter Hell utterly humiliated.”
40:61
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيۡلَ لِتَسۡكُنُواْ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبۡصِرًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضۡلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشۡكُرُونَ ٦١
It is Allāh who has made the Night for you, that you may rest therein, and [made] the Day shining. Verily, Allāh is full of grace and bounty to people: but most people give no thanks.
40:62
ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ خَٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤۡفَكُونَ ٦٢
Such is Allāh, your Lord, the Creator of everything, there is no god but He: how then you are deluded away [from the Truth]!
40:63
كَذَٰلِكَ يُؤۡفَكُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجۡحَدُونَ ٦٣
Thus are deluded those who are wont to disacknowledge the Signs of Allāh.
40:64
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ قَرَارٗا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءٗ وَصَوَّرَكُمۡ فَأَحۡسَنَ صُوَرَكُمۡ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡۖ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٤
It is Allāh who has made for you the earth as an abode of stability, and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape — and made your shapes most beautiful — and has provided for you Sustenance, of things wholesome; such is Allāh your Sustainer. So exalted is Allāh, the Lord of the Worlds!
40:65
هُوَ ٱلۡحَيُّ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدۡعُوهُ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَۗ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٥
He is the Ever-Living [the Eternal]: There is no god but He: Call upon Him, offering Him sincere devotion, [saying:] Praise be to Allāh, Sustainer of the Worlds!
40:66
قُلۡ إِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنۡ أَعۡبُدَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَمَّا جَآءَنِيَ ٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتُ مِن رَّبِّي وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أُسۡلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٦
Say [O Prophet]: “I have been forbidden to worship those whom you worship in lieu of Allāh, seeing that the Clear Sings have come to me from my Sustainer; and I have been commanded to submit to the Sustainer of the Worlds.”
40:67
هُوَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٖ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطۡفَةٖ ثُمَّ مِنۡ عَلَقَةٖ ثُمَّ يُخۡرِجُكُمۡ طِفۡلٗا ثُمَّ لِتَبۡلُغُوٓاْ أَشُدَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُواْ شُيُوخٗاۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَلِتَبۡلُغُوٓاْ أَجَلٗا مُّسَمّٗى وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ٦٧
It is He who has created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a congealed blood clot; then He does get you out [into the light] as an infant: then He lets you [grow and] reach your age of full strength; then He lets you become old — though of you there are some who die before [reaching old age] — and lets you reach a term appointed; in order that you may understand.
40:68
هُوَ ٱلَّذِي يُحۡيِۦ وَيُمِيتُۖ فَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمۡرٗا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ ٦٨
It is He who gives life and death; and when He decides upon an affair, He [only] says to it, “Be!” and it is.
40:69
أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أَنَّىٰ يُصۡرَفُونَ ٦٩
See you not those that dispute concerning the Signs of Allāh? How are they turning away [from Truth]?
40:70
ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَبِمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا بِهِۦ رُسُلَنَاۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ ٧٠
Those who disbelieved the Book and the [revelations] with which We sent Our Messengers: soon shall they know,
40:71
إِذِ ٱلۡأَغۡلَٰلُ فِيٓ أَعۡنَٰقِهِمۡ وَٱلسَّلَٰسِلُ يُسۡحَبُونَ ٧١
when the yokes [shall be placed] round their necks, and the chains; they shall be dragged along
40:72
فِي ٱلۡحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِي ٱلنَّارِ يُسۡجَرُونَ ٧٢
into the boiling fluid: then in the Fire shall they be burned;
40:73
ثُمَّ قِيلَ لَهُمۡ أَيۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تُشۡرِكُونَ ٧٣
then shall it be said to them: “Where are [the deities] which you associated [in godhood]
40:74
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالُواْ ضَلُّواْ عَنَّا بَل لَّمۡ نَكُن نَّدۡعُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ شَيۡـٔٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ ٧٤
besides Allāh?” They will reply: “They have left us in the lurch: nay, we invoked not, of old, anything [that had real existence].” Thus does Allāh leave the Rejecters to stray.
40:75
ذَٰلِكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡرَحُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَمۡرَحُونَ ٧٥
[They will be told on the Day of Judgement:] “That was because you were wont to rejoice on the earth in things other than the Truth, and that you were wont to exult.
40:76
ٱدۡخُلُوٓاْ أَبۡوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِينَ ٧٦
“Enter you the gates of Hell, to dwell therein forever: and evil is [this] abode of the arrogant!”
40:77
فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞۚ فَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِي نَعِدُهُمۡ أَوۡ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِلَيۡنَا يُرۡجَعُونَ ٧٧
So endure patiently [O Prophet]; for the Promise of Allāh is true: and whether We show you [in this life] some part of what We promise them, or We take your soul [to Our Mercy] [before that], [in any case] it is to Us that they shall [all] return.
40:78
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلٗا مِّن قَبۡلِكَ مِنۡهُم مَّن قَصَصۡنَا عَلَيۡكَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن لَّمۡ نَقۡصُصۡ عَلَيۡكَۗ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأۡتِيَ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ قُضِيَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ٧٨
We did aforetime send Messengers before you: of them there are some whose story We have related to you, and some whose story We have not related to you. It was not [permissible] for any Messenger to bring a Sign except by the leave of Allāh: But when the Command of Allāh is issued, the matter is decided in Truth, and those who stood on Falsehoods lost, there and then.
40:79
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمَ لِتَرۡكَبُواْ مِنۡهَا وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ٧٩
It is Allāh who made cattle for you, that you may use some for riding and some for food;
40:80
وَلَكُمۡ فِيهَا مَنَٰفِعُ وَلِتَبۡلُغُواْ عَلَيۡهَا حَاجَةٗ فِي صُدُورِكُمۡ وَعَلَيۡهَا وَعَلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ تُحۡمَلُونَ ٨٠
and there are [other] advantages in them for you [besides]; that you may through them attain to any need [there may be] in your hearts; and on them and on ships you are carried.
40:81
وَيُرِيكُمۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ فَأَيَّ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُنكِرُونَ ٨١
And [always] He shows you His Signs: then which of the Signs of Allāh will you disacknowledge?
40:82
أَفَلَمۡ يَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَيَنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُوٓاْ أَكۡثَرَ مِنۡهُمۡ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةٗ وَءَاثَارٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَمَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ٨٢
Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the fate of those before them? Those were more numerous than these and more superior in strength and in the traces [they have left] in the land: yet all that they accomplished was of no profit to them.
40:83
فَلَمَّا جَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ فَرِحُواْ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ٨٣
For when their Messengers came to them with Clear [Signs], they exulted in such knowledge [and skill] as they [already] had; but that very [punishment] at which they were wont to scoff hemmed them in.
40:84
فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡاْ بَأۡسَنَا قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَحۡدَهُۥ وَكَفَرۡنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِۦ مُشۡرِكِينَ ٨٤
So, when they saw Our punishment, they said: “We believe in Allāh alone, and we reject the partners we used to join with Him.”
40:85
فَلَمۡ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمۡ إِيمَٰنُهُمۡ لَمَّا رَأَوۡاْ بَأۡسَنَاۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِي قَدۡ خَلَتۡ فِي عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ ٨٥
But their professing the Faith when they [actually] had seen Our punishment was not going to profit them. [Such has been] Allāh’s Way of dealing with His servants1[from the ancient times]. And thus did the Rejecters of Allāh lose [utterly]!
