سُورَةُ النَّبَإِ78. The News

78:1

عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ١

Concerning what are they enquiring?

78:2

عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ٢

Concerning the Great News,

78:3

ٱلَّذِي هُمۡ فِيهِ مُخۡتَلِفُونَ ٣

about which they disagree.

78:4

كـَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُونَ ٤

Verily, they shall soon [come to] know!

78:5

ثُمَّ كـَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُونَ ٥

Again, verily, they shall soon [come to] know!

78:6

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِهَٰدٗا ٦

Have We not made the earth a wide expanse?

78:7

وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَوۡتَادٗا ٧

and the mountains as pegs?

78:8

وَخَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا ٨

and [have We not] created you in pairs,

78:9

وَجَعَلۡنَا نَوۡمَكُمۡ سُبَاتٗا ٩

And made your sleep for rest,

78:10

وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلَّيۡلَ لِبَاسٗا ١٠

And made the night as a covering,

78:11

وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشٗا ١١

and made the day as a means of [earning] subsistence?

78:12

وَبَنَيۡنَا فَوۡقَكُمۡ سَبۡعٗا شِدَادٗا ١٢

and [have We not] built over you the seven strong [firmaments],

78:13

وَجَعَلۡنَا سِرَاجٗا وَهَّاجٗا ١٣

and placed [therein] a blazing lamp [Sun].

78:14

وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلۡمُعۡصِرَٰتِ مَآءٗ ثَجَّاجٗا ١٤

and We sent down from the clouds water in abundance,

78:15

لِّنُخۡرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبّٗا وَنَبَاتٗا ١٥

that We may produce therewith grain and vegetables,

78:16

وَجَنَّٰتٍ أَلۡفَافًا ١٦

and orchards of [luxurious] dense growth?

78:17

إِنَّ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ كَانَ مِيقَٰتٗا ١٧

Verily, the Day-of-Sorting-Outis a time appointed,

78:18

يَوۡمَ يُنفَخُ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأۡتُونَ أَفۡوَاجٗا ١٨

the Day that the Trumpet shall be blown, and you shall come forth in [big] crowds;

78:19

وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ أَبۡوَٰبٗا ١٩

and the heavens shall be opened as if there were gates,

78:20

وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ فَكَانَتۡ سَرَابًا ٢٠

and the mountains shall be moved, as if they were a mirage.

78:21

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتۡ مِرۡصَادٗا ٢١

Truly, Hell is as a place of ambush.

78:22

لِّلطَّٰغِينَ مَـَٔابٗا ٢٢

For the transgressors, it is a place of destination:

78:23

لَّٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحۡقَابٗا ٢٣

therein they will dwell for [endless] ages.

78:24

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرۡدٗا وَلَا شَرَابًا ٢٤

Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink,

78:25

إِلَّا حَمِيمٗا وَغَسَّاقٗا ٢٥

except a boiling fluid and pus [of the inmates of Hell],

78:26

جَزَآءٗ وِفَاقًا ٢٦

a fitting recompense [for them],

78:27

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ لَا يَرۡجُونَ حِسَابٗا ٢٧

for they did not expect that they will be called to account [for their deeds],

78:28

وَكَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كِذَّابٗا ٢٨

and they vehemently disbelieved Our Signs.

78:29

وَكُلَّ شَيۡءٍ أَحۡصَيۡنَٰهُ كِتَٰبٗا ٢٩

And all things have We preserved on record.

78:30

فَذُوقُواْ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمۡ إِلَّا عَذَابًا ٣٠

[Transgressors will be told:] “So taste you [the fruits of your deeds]; for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment.”

78:31

إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا ٣١

Verily, for the [God‐]fearing, there will be a place of safety [and success]:

78:32

حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعۡنَٰبٗا ٣٢

orchards, and grapevines;

78:33

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتۡرَابٗا ٣٣

and maidens of equal age;

78:34

وَكَأۡسٗا دِهَاقٗا ٣٤

and a cup full [to the brim].

78:35

لَّا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوٗا وَلَا كِذَّٰبٗا ٣٥

No vanityshall they hear therein, nor Untruth.

78:36

جَزَآءٗ مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابٗا ٣٦

[This will be a] recompense from your Lord, a gift, [amply] commensurate,

78:37

رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِۖ لَا يَمۡلِكُونَ مِنۡهُ خِطَابٗا ٣٧

[from] the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between them — the Most-Gracious: None shall have power [on the Day of Judgement] to argue with Him.

78:38

يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ صَفّٗاۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنۡ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابٗا ٣٨

The Day that the Spiritand the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall [dare to] speak [to Allāh] except one who is permitted by the Most-Gracious, and he will say [only] what is right.

78:39

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا ٣٩

That is the Day of Truth: Therefore, whosoever will, let him take a [straight] Path to his Lord!

78:40

إِنَّآ أَنذَرۡنَٰكُمۡ عَذَابٗا قَرِيبٗا يَوۡمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلۡكَافِرُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَٰبَۢا ٤٠

Verily, We have warned you of a Punishment near, the Day when Man will see [the deeds] which his hands have sent forth, and the Rejecter [of Truth] will say, “Woe unto me! Would that I was [mere] dust!”

سُورَةُ النَّازِعَاتِ79. The Soul-snatchers

79:1

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقٗا ١

By the [angels] who tear out [the souls of the Wicked] with cruelty;

79:2

وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطٗا ٢

and by those who gently draw out [the souls of the blessed];

79:3

وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحٗا ٣

and by those who glide along [on errands of Mercy of their Lord],

79:4

فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقٗا ٤

then press forward as in a race,

79:5

فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرٗا ٥

then arrange to do Command [of their Lord],

79:6

يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ ٦

the Day [of Resurrection] when everything, that can be in commotion, will be in violent commotion,

79:7

تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ ٧

followed by oft-repeated [commotions]:

79:8

قُلُوبٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ وَاجِفَةٌ ٨

Hearts that Day will be in agitation [out of fear];

79:9

أَبۡصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٞ ٩

cast down will be [their owners’] eyes.

79:10

يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرۡدُودُونَ فِي ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ ١٠

They say [now]: “What! Shall we indeed be returned to [our] former state?

79:11

أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمٗا نَّخِرَةٗ ١١

“What! When we shall have become hollow bones?”

79:12

قَالُواْ تِلۡكَ إِذٗا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٞ ١٢

They say: “It would, in that case, be a return with loss!”

79:13

فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ ١٣

But, verily, it will be but a single [compelling] Cry,

79:14

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ ١٤

when, behold, they [the dead] will be brought out to the open.

79:15

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ ١٥

Has the story of Mūsāreached you?

79:16

إِذۡ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى ١٦

Behold, your Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā:

79:17

ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ١٧

[He was commanded:] “Go to the Pharaohfor he has indeed transgressed [all bounds]:

79:18

فَقُلۡ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ ١٨

“And say to him, ‘Would you wish that you be purified [from sin]?

79:19

وَأَهۡدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشَىٰ ١٩

“‘And that I guide you to your Lord, so you should fear [Him]?’”

79:20

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلۡأٓيَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ٢٠

Then did [Mūsā] show him the Great Sign.

79:21

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ ٢١

[But the Pharaoh] disbelieved and disobeyed [the Message];

79:22

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعَىٰ ٢٢

Further, he turned his back, striving hard [against Allāh].

79:23

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ ٢٣

Then he assembled [his people] and made a proclamation.

79:24

فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ٢٤

He said, “I am your Lord, Supreme.”

79:25

فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ ٢٥

So Allāh did seize him, [and made him an] example [of Punishment]in the Hereafter, and in the first [life].

79:26

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةٗ لِّمَن يَخۡشَىٰٓ ٢٦

Verily, in this is a lesson for whosoever fears [Allāh].

79:27

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ بَنَىٰهَا ٢٧

What! Are you more difficult to create or the heaven [above]? [Allāh] has constructed it:

79:28

رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا ٢٨

High has He raised its canopy and gave it perfection.

79:29

وَأَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَأَخۡرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا ٢٩

Its night He endowed with darkness, and its splendour He brought out [with the daylight].

79:30

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ ٣٠

And the earth, thereafter, He levelled [to a wide expanse];

79:31

أَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا ٣١

He drew out therefrom its water and its pasture,

79:32

وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَرۡسَىٰهَا ٣٢

and the mountains has He firmly fixed,

79:33

مَتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ ٣٣

a provision for you and your cattle.

79:34

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ٣٤

Therefore, when there comes the Greatest, Overwhelming [Event],

79:35

يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ ٣٥

the Day when Man shall remember [all] that he strove for [during his life on earth],

79:36

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ ٣٦

and Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for him who sees.

79:37

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ ٣٧

Then, for such as had transgressed [all bounds],

79:38

وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ٣٨

and had preferred the life of this world,

79:39

فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ ٣٩

Hell will be [his eternal] abode;

79:40

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ ٤٠

But for such as had entertained the fear of standing before his Lord [for Judgement] and had restrained [his] soul from whims,

79:41

فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ ٤١

Paradise is [his eternal] abode.

79:42

يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَا ٤٢

They ask you about The Hour:“When will be its appointed time?”

79:43

فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ ٤٣

Wherein are you [concerned] with the narration thereof?

79:44

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ٤٤

With your Lord is its final end.

79:45

إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰهَا ٤٥

You are but a Warner for those as fear it.

79:46

كَأَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوۡ ضُحَىٰهَا ٤٦

The Day they will see it, [it will be] as if they had spentbut a single evening, or [at most till] the following morning!

سُورَةُ عَبَسَ80. He Frowned

80:1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١

He [the Prophet] frowned and turned away,

80:2

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ ٢

because there came to him the blind man [interrupting].

80:3

وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ٣

But what could tell you that by chance he might grow in purity?

80:4

أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ ٤

Or that he might receive Admonition, and the Reminder might profit him?

80:5

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ ٥

But as to the one who regards himself as self-sufficient,

80:6

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦

to him you do attend;

80:7

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧

though it is no blame to you if he grows not in purity.

80:8

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ ٨

But as to him who came to you striving earnestly,

80:9

وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ ٩

and he fears [Allāh in his heart],

80:10

فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠

of him you are unmindful.

80:11

كـَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ ١١

By no means [should it be so]! For it [the Qur’ān] is indeed a Reminder.

80:12

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ١٢

So, let whosoever will, keep it in remembrance.

80:13

فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ ١٣

[It is kept] in Books held [greatly] in honour,

80:14

مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ ١٤

Exalted [in dignity], purified,

80:15

بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ ١٥

[written] by the hands of scribes,

80:16

كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ ١٦

honourable and pious.

80:17

قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ ١٧

Woe to Man! What has made him reject [Allāh]?

80:18

مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ١٨

From what stuff has He created him?

80:19

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ١٩

From a sperm-drop: He created him and then moulded him in due proportions;

80:20

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ٢٠

Then He made [his] path smooth for him;

80:21

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ ٢١

Then He caused him to die, and put him in his grave;

80:22

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ٢٢

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up [again].

80:23

كـَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ٢٣

By no means has he [Man] fulfilled what [Allāh] has commanded him.

80:24

فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ٢٤

So let Man look at his food, [and how We provide it]:

80:25

أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا ٢٥

For [that] We pour forth water in abundance,

80:26

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا ٢٦

And We split the earth in fragments,

80:27

فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا ٢٧

and produce therein grains,

80:28

وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا ٢٨

and grapes and the fresh vegetables,

80:29

وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا ٢٩

and olives and dates,

80:30

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا ٣٠

and enclosed orchards, dense with lofty trees,

80:31

وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا ٣١

and fruits and pastures,

80:32

مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ ٣٢

a provision for you and for your cattle.

80:33

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ٣٣

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,

80:34

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ ٣٤

the Day shall a man flee from his [own] brother,

80:35

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ٣٥

and from his mother and his father,

80:36

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ٣٦

and from his wife and his children.

80:37

لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ ٣٧

Each man of them, that Day, will have enough concern [of his own] to make him indifferent [to others].

80:38

وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ ٣٨

Some faces that Day will be shining [with delight],

80:39

ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ ٣٩

laughing, rejoicing.

80:40

وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ ٤٠

And some other faces that Day will be dust-stained;

80:41

تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ٤١

a dark cloud will cover them:

80:42

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ ٤٢

They are the Rejecters [of Allāh], the wicked.

سُورَةُ التَّكۡوِيرِ81. The Wrapping Up

81:1

إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ ١

When the Sun will be wrapped up [losing its light];

81:2

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ ٢

and when the stars will scatter [losing their lustre];

81:3

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ ٣

and when the mountains will be made to move;

81:4

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ ٤

and when the she-camels, ten months with young, will be left untended;

81:5

وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ ٥

and when the wild beasts will be herded together;

81:6

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ ٦

and when the oceans will be set on fire;

81:7

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ ٧

and when the souls will be sorted out [being joined, like with like];

81:8

وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡ ٨

and when the female [infant], buried alive, will be questioned —

81:9

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبٖ قُتِلَتۡ ٩

for what sin was she killed;

81:10

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ ١٠

and when the Scrolls will be laid open;

81:11

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ ١١

and when the sky will be unveiled;

81:12

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ ١٢

and when the Blazing Fire will be kindled to fierce heat;

81:13

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ ١٣

and when Paradise will be brought closer;

81:14

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ ١٤

[then] shall [each] soul come to know what it has sent forward.

81:15

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ ١٥

So, verily, I do swear by the Planets, that return,

81:16

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ ١٦

go straight, or hide;

81:17

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ ١٧

and the Night as it recedes;

81:18

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ١٨

and the dawn as it breathes away [the darkness];

81:19

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖ ١٩

Verily, this is the word of an honourable Messenger,

81:20

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٖ ٢٠

endowed with Power, held in honour by the Lord-of-the-Throne,

81:21

مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖ ٢١

with authority there, [and] faithful to his trust.

81:22

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٖ ٢٢

And [O People!] Your Companion [Prophet] is not one bewitched;

81:23

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢٣

and without doubt he saw him [Jibrīl] in the clear horizon.

81:24

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٖ ٢٤

Neither does he [the Prophet] withhold grudgingly [knowledge of] the Unseen.

81:25

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖ ٢٥

Nor is it [the Qur’ān] the word of a Shayṭān accursed.

81:26

فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ ٢٦

So, whither go you [O Rejecters]?

81:27

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٢٧

Verily, this is nothing but a Message to [all] the Worlds:

81:28

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ ٢٨

[with profit] to whoever among you wills to go straight:

81:29

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٢٩

But you shall not will except as wills Allāh,the Lord-of-the-Worlds.

سُورَةُ الانفِطَارِ82. The Cleaving

82:1

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ ١

When the Sky will be cleft asunder;

82:2

وَإِذَا ٱلۡكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتۡ ٢

and when the Stars will be scattered;

82:3

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتۡ ٣

and when the Oceans will be made to burst forth;

82:4

وَإِذَا ٱلۡقُبُورُ بُعۡثِرَتۡ ٤

and when the graves will be turned upside down;

82:5

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ وَأَخَّرَتۡ ٥

[Then] shall every soul know what it has sent forward and [what it has] kept back.

82:6

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡكَرِيمِ ٦

[That day it will be asked:] “O Man! What deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most-Generous?

82:7

ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ ٧

“Him who created you, fashioned you in due proportion, and gave you a just bias;

82:8

فِيٓ أَيِّ صُورَةٖ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ ٨

“in whatever shape He willed, did He put you together.”

82:9

كـَلَّا بَلۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ ٩

Nay! But you do disbelieve [the Day of] the Judgement!

82:10

وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَحَٰفِظِينَ ١٠

But, verily, over you [are appointed angels] as protectors,

82:11

كِرَامٗا كَٰتِبِينَ ١١

noble, writing down [your deeds]:

82:12

يَعۡلَمُونَ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ١٢

they know [all] that you do.

82:13

إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٖ ١٣

As for the Righteous, they will be in Bliss;

82:14

وَإِنَّ ٱلۡفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمٖ ١٤

and the Wicked will be in the Fire,

82:15

يَصۡلَوۡنَهَا يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ ١٥

in which they will burn on the Day of Judgement,

82:16

وَمَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ ١٦

and they will not be able to keep away therefrom.

82:17

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٧

And what makes you know what the Day of Judgement is?

82:18

ثُمَّ مَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٨

Again, what makes you know what the Day of Judgement is?

82:19

يَوۡمَ لَا تَمۡلِكُ نَفۡسٞ لِّنَفۡسٖ شَيۡـٔٗاۖ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلَّهِ ١٩

[It will be] the Day when no soul shall have power [to do] anything for another: For the Command, that Day, will be [wholly] with Allāh.

سُورَةُ المُطَفِّفِينَ83. The Defrauders in Weight

83:1

وَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ ١

Woe to those who defraud in weighing [and measuring],

83:2

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكۡتَالُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُونَ ٢

those who, when they have to receive by measure from people, exact full measure,

83:3

وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمۡ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُونَ ٣

but when they give people by measure or weight, they give them short [weight].

83:4

أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ ٤

Do they not think that they will be raised up?

83:5

لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٖ ٥

on a Mighty Day [of Judgement],

83:6

يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦

a Day when [all] Mankind will stand before the Lord-of-the-Worlds?

83:7

كـَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٖ ٧

Nay! Surely, the Record of the Wicked is [preserved] in Sijjīn.

83:8

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٞ ٨

And what will make you know what Sijjīn is?

83:9

كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ ٩

[It is] a Register [fully] inscribed.

83:10

وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ١٠

Woe, that Day, to the disbelievers,

83:11

ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ ١١

those who disbelieve the Day of Judgement.

83:12

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢

And none can disbelieve it [the Day of Judgement] save every violator [of limits], sinner!

83:13

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣

When Our Signs are rehearsed to him, he says, “[These are] fables of the Ancients!”

83:14

كـَلَّاۖ بَلۡۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ١٤

By no means! But on their hearts is the stain of the [sins] which they earned!

83:15

كـَلَّآ إِنَّهُمۡ عَن رَّبِّهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّمَحۡجُوبُونَ ١٥

Verily, that Day, they will be veiled from [the glimpse of] their Lord.

83:16

ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمۡ لَصَالُواْ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ١٦

Thereafter, they will burn in the Fire of Hell.

83:17

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ١٧

Further, it will be said to them: “This is the [reality] which you used to disbelieve.

83:18

كـَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ ١٨

Nay, verily, the Record of the Righteous is [preserved] in ‘Illīyūn.

83:19

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ ١٩

And what will make you know what ‘Illīyūn is?

83:20

كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ ٢٠

[It is] a Register [fully] inscribed,

83:21

يَشۡهَدُهُ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ٢١

witnessed by those nearest [to Allāh].

83:22

إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ ٢٢

Truly, the Righteous will be in Bliss:

83:23

عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ٢٣

[sitting] on raised couches will they command a sight [of all things]:

83:24

تَعۡرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمۡ نَضۡرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٢٤

You will recognise in their faces the beaming brightness of Bliss.

83:25

يُسۡقَوۡنَ مِن رَّحِيقٖ مَّخۡتُومٍ ٢٥

They will be served a drink of a sealed Pure Wine:

83:26

خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسۡكٞۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلۡيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلۡمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ ٢٦

the seal thereof will be musk: and for this let those aspire, who have aspiration:

83:27

وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسۡنِيمٍ ٢٧

with it will be [given] a mixture of Tasnīm:

83:28

عَيۡنٗا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ٢٨

a spring, from [the waters] whereof drink those nearest [to Allāh].

83:29

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجۡرَمُواْ كَانُواْ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يَضۡحَكُونَ ٢٩

Those given to sin used to laugh at those who believed,

83:30

وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِهِمۡ يَتَغَامَزُونَ ٣٠

and whenever they passed by them, they used to wink at each other [in mockery];

83:31

وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓاْ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ ٣١

and when they returned to their families, they would return jesting;

83:32

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡهُمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ ٣٢

and whenever they saw them [the Believers], they would say, “Behold! Those [believers] are the people gone astray!”

83:33

وَمَآ أُرۡسِلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَٰفِظِينَ ٣٣

But they had not been sent as keepers over them [the Believers]!

83:34

فَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ يَضۡحَكُونَ ٣٤

So, on this Day [of Judgement] the Believers will laugh at the Rejecters.

83:35

عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ٣٥

[Sitting] on raised couches they will command a sight [of all things].

83:36

هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ ٣٦

Have not the Rejecters been paid back for [all] that they did?

سُورَةُ الانشِقَاقِ84. The Split

84:1

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ ١

When the Sky will be rent apart,

84:2

وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٢

and will listen [to and obey the Command of] its Lord, as it must [do];

84:3

وَإِذَا ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مُدَّتۡ ٣

and when the Earth will be flattened out,

84:4

وَأَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتۡ ٤

and it [Earth] will cast forth what is within it and becomes [clean] empty,

84:5

وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٥

and it will listen to [and obey the Command of] its Lord, as it must [do];

84:6

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحٗا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ٦

O You Man! Verily, you are ever toiling on, painfully, towards your Lord — until you meet Him.

84:7

فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ٧

Then he who is given his Record in his right hand,

84:8

فَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابٗا يَسِيرٗا ٨

soon will his account be taken by an easy reckoning,

84:9

وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورٗا ٩

and he will turn to his people, rejoicing!

84:10

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهِۦ ١٠

But he who is given his Record from behind his back,

84:11

فَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُواْ ثُبُورٗا ١١

soon will he cry for destruction,

84:12

وَيَصۡلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ١٢

and he will burn in a Blazing Fire.

84:13

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِيٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورًا ١٣

Truly, he used to go about among his people, rejoicing!

84:14

إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ١٤

Truly, he thought that he would never have to return [to Allāh, after death]!

84:15

بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرٗا ١٥

Nay! His Lord was [ever] watchful over him!

84:16

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ١٦

So, I do swear by the reddish glow of Sunset;

84:17

وَٱلَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ١٧

the Night and its homing;

84:18

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ١٨

and the Moon in her fullness:

84:19

لَتَرۡكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٖ ١٩

Verily, you shall travel from stage to stage.

84:20

فَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٢٠

What then is the matter with them [the Rejecters], that they believe not?

84:21

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ لَا يَسۡجُدُونَۤ۩ ٢١

And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they fall not prostrate [to Allāh].

84:22

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٢

But, on the contrary, the Rejecters disbelieve [it].

84:23

وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ٢٣

Allāh has full knowledge of what they retain [in their minds]

84:24

فَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٢٤

So announce to them a Punishment painful,

84:25

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونِۭ ٢٥

except to those who believe and do righteous deeds: For them is a Reward, complete [and limitless].

سُورَةُ البُرُوجِ85. The Constellations

85:1

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡبُرُوجِ ١

By the Sky with the constellations,

85:2

وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡمَوۡعُودِ ٢

and the Promised Day [of Judgement],

85:3

وَشَاهِدٖ وَمَشۡهُودٖ ٣

and one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness.

85:4

قُتِلَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ ٤

Woe to the People of the Ditch [of Fire],

85:5

ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡوَقُودِ ٥

the Fire supplied [abundantly] with fuel:

85:6

إِذۡ هُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا قُعُودٞ ٦

Behold! They sat over against it [the Fire],

85:7

وَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفۡعَلُونَ بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ شُهُودٞ ٧

And they were witness to [all] that they were doing to the Believers,

85:8

وَمَا نَقَمُواْ مِنۡهُمۡ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤۡمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَمِيدِ ٨

and they exacted vengeance upon them for no other reason than that they believed in Allāh, the Mighty, the Worthy-of-all-Praise!

85:9

ٱلَّذِي لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ شَهِيدٌ ٩

Him to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allāh is watching over all things.

85:10

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُواْ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَتُوبُواْ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ ٱلۡحَرِيقِ ١٠

Those who subject the Believers, men and women, to trialand do not turn in repentance, will have the Punishment of Hell: They will have the Punishment of the Burning Fire.

85:11

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنَّٰتٞ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡكَبِيرُ ١١

For those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens, beneath which Rivers flow: That is the Great Success.

85:12

إِنَّ بَطۡشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ١٢

Truly strong is the Seizure of your Lord.

85:13

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبۡدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ ١٣

It is He who originates from the very beginning, and who recreates [life].

85:14

وَهُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلۡوَدُودُ ١٤

And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most-Loving,

85:15

ذُو ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱلۡمَجِيدُ ١٥

The Most Glorious Lord of the Throne,

85:16

فَعَّالٞ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ١٦

Doer [without let] of all that He intends.

85:17

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلۡجُنُودِ ١٧

Has the story reached you, of the Forces

85:18

فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَثَمُودَ ١٨

of the Pharaohand of the Thamūd?

85:19

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فِي تَكۡذِيبٖ ١٩

And yet the Rejecters [persist] in disbelieving [the Truth]!

85:20

وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطُۢ ٢٠

But Allāh is Ever-Encircling from behind them!

85:21

بَلۡ هُوَ قُرۡءَانٞ مَّجِيدٞ ٢١

Nay, this is a Glorious Qur’ān,

85:22

فِي لَوۡحٖ مَّحۡفُوظِۭ ٢٢

[inscribed] in a Tablet Secure!

سُورَةُ الطَّارِقِ86. The Night-Visitor

86:1

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ ١

By the Sky and the Night-Visitor [therein];

86:2

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ ٢

and what will let you know what the Night-Visitor is?

86:3

ٱلنَّجۡمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ ٣

[It is] the Star of Piercing Brightness;

86:4

إِن كُلُّ نَفۡسٖ لَّمَّا عَلَيۡهَا حَافِظٞ ٤

There is no soul but has a protector over it.

86:5

فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ ٥

So let Man see from what he is created!

86:6

خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٖ دَافِقٖ ٦

He is created from a drop ejaculated,

86:7

يَخۡرُجُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ ٱلصُّلۡبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ ٧

proceeding from between the loins and the ribs.

86:8

إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجۡعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٞ ٨

Surely [Allāh] is able to bring him back [to life after death],

86:9

يَوۡمَ تُبۡلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ ٩

the Day [of Judgement] when [all] things secret will be tested,

86:10

فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٖ وَلَا نَاصِرٖ ١٠

[Man that day] will have no power, and no helper.

86:11

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجۡعِ ١١

By the Sky which gives the returning [rain],

86:12

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدۡعِ ١٢

and by the Earth which splits open [for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of plants].

86:13

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلٞ فَصۡلٞ ١٣

Behold, this is the Word that distinguishes [Good from Evil]:

86:14

وَمَا هُوَ بِٱلۡهَزۡلِ ١٤

It is not a thing for jest.

86:15

إِنَّهُمۡ يَكِيدُونَ كَيۡدٗا ١٥

As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

86:16

وَأَكِيدُ كَيۡدٗا ١٦

and I [too] am planning a scheme.

86:17

فَمَهِّلِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ أَمۡهِلۡهُمۡ رُوَيۡدَۢا ١٧

Therefore, grant a respite to the Rejecters: give respite to them gently [for a while].

سُورَةُ الأَعۡلَىٰ87. The Most-High

87:1

سَبِّحِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَى ١

Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most-High,

87:2

ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ٢

who created, and, further, gave [due] proportion [to what He created];

87:3

وَٱلَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ ٣

who measured, and granted guidance [to Man and animals];

87:4

وَٱلَّذِيٓ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلۡمَرۡعَىٰ ٤

and who brought out the [green and luscious] pasture,

87:5

فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحۡوَىٰ ٥

and then turned it into blackish straw.

87:6

سَنُقۡرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ ٦

[O Prophet, by degrees] shall We reveal to you [the Message], so forget [it] not,

87:7

إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡجَهۡرَ وَمَا يَخۡفَىٰ ٧

except as Allāh wills.Verily, He knows what is manifest and what is hidden [of your conduct].

87:8

وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ ٨

And We will make it easy for you [to follow] the easy [Path].

87:9

فَذَكِّرۡ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ ٩

Therefore, give admonition in case the admonition profits [the listener].

87:10

سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰ ١٠

He will remember who fears [Allāh]:

87:11

وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلۡأَشۡقَى ١١

[But] it will be avoided by the most wicked,

87:12

ٱلَّذِي يَصۡلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ١٢

who will burn in the great Fire,

87:13

ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحۡيَىٰ ١٣

in which he will then neither die nor live.

87:14

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ١٤

But he will prosper who purifies himself,

87:15

وَذَكَرَ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ ١٥

and remembers the name of his Lord, and prays.

87:16

بَلۡ تُؤۡثِرُونَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ١٦

Nay [behold], you prefer the life of this world;

87:17

وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ ١٧

but the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

87:18

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ١٨

And this is in the Scriptures of the earliest [Revelations],

87:19

صُحُفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ ١٩

The Scriptures of Ibrāhīmand Mūsā.

سُورَةُ الغَاشِيَةِ88. The Overwhelming Event

88:1

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلۡغَٰشِيَةِ ١

Has the story reached you of the Overwhelming [Event]?

88:2

وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ ٢

Some faces that Day will be humbled,

88:3

عَامِلَةٞ نَّاصِبَةٞ ٣

labouring [hard], weary,

88:4

تَصۡلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةٗ ٤

the while they burn in the Blazing Fire,

88:5

تُسۡقَىٰ مِنۡ عَيۡنٍ ءَانِيَةٖ ٥

the while they will be given to drink of a boiling hot spring,

88:6

لَّيۡسَ لَهُمۡ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٖ ٦

No food will there be for them but a [bitter] dharī‘,

88:7

لَّا يُسۡمِنُ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِن جُوعٖ ٧

which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.

88:8

وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ نَّاعِمَةٞ ٨

[Some] faces that Day will be joyful,

88:9

لِّسَعۡيِهَا رَاضِيَةٞ ٩

pleased with their Striving,

88:10

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٖ ١٠

in an elevated Garden,

88:11

لَّا تَسۡمَعُ فِيهَا لَٰغِيَةٗ ١١

where they shall hear no useless [chatter]:

88:12

فِيهَا عَيۡنٞ جَارِيَةٞ ١٢

Therein will be a running spring:

88:13

فِيهَا سُرُرٞ مَّرۡفُوعَةٞ ١٣

Therein will be couches [of dignity], raised on high,

88:14

وَأَكۡوَابٞ مَّوۡضُوعَةٞ ١٤

goblets placed [ready],

88:15

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصۡفُوفَةٞ ١٥

and cushions set in rows,

88:16

وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبۡثُوثَةٌ ١٦

and rich [colourful] carpets [all] spread out.

88:17

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡإِبِلِ كَيۡفَ خُلِقَتۡ ١٧

Do they not look at the camels: how they are created?,

88:18

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيۡفَ رُفِعَتۡ ١٨

and at the Sky, how it is raised high?,

88:19

وَإِلَى ٱلۡجِبَالِ كَيۡفَ نُصِبَتۡ ١٩

and at the mountains, how they are fixed [firm]?

88:20

وَإِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَيۡفَ سُطِحَتۡ ٢٠

and at the Earth, how it is spread out?

88:21

فَذَكِّرۡ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٞ ٢١

Therefore, do remind, for you are but one to remind.

88:22

لَّسۡتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِمُصَيۡطِرٍ ٢٢

You are not one to control [their] affairs.

88:23

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ ٢٣

But if any turn away and reject [after believing in the Message],

88:24

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرَ ٢٤

Allāh will inflict on him a mighty Punishment.

88:25

إِنَّ إِلَيۡنَآ إِيَابَهُمۡ ٢٥

For to Us will be their return;

88:26

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا حِسَابَهُم ٢٦

then it will be for Us to call them to account.

سُورَةُ الفَجۡرِ89. The Dawn

89:1

وَٱلۡفَجۡرِ ١

By the Dawn;

89:2

وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرٖ ٢

and the Ten Nights;

89:3

وَٱلشَّفۡعِ وَٱلۡوَتۡرِ ٣

and the Even and Odd [contrasted];

89:4

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَسۡرِ ٤

and the Night when it passes.

89:5

هَلۡ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٞ لِّذِي حِجۡرٍ ٥

Is there [not] in these an adjuration for one who understands?

89:6

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ ٦

See you not how your Lord dealt with the ‘Ād [people],

89:7

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلۡعِمَادِ ٧

of the [town of] Iram,the one with lofty pillars,

89:8

ٱلَّتِي لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ ٨

the like of which were not created in [all] the land?

89:9

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُواْ ٱلصَّخۡرَ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٩

And [how He dealt] with the Thamūd[people], who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley?

89:10

وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِي ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ ١٠

And with the Pharaoh,Lord of Stakes?

89:11

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوۡاْ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ ١١

[All] these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

89:12

فَأَكۡثَرُواْ فِيهَا ٱلۡفَسَادَ ١٢

and heaped therein mischief [on mischief].

89:13

فَصَبَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّكَ سَوۡطَ عَذَابٍ ١٣

Therefore, your Lord flogged them with [diverse] punishments.

89:14

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلۡمِرۡصَادِ ١٤

Verily, your Lord is [ever] Watchful.

89:15

فَأَمَّا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكۡرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَكۡرَمَنِ ١٥

Now, as for Man, when his Lord tests him, giving him honour and gifts, says he [puffed up], “My Lord has honoured me.”

89:16

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَهَٰنَنِ ١٦

But when He [Allāh] tests him, restricting his sustenance for him, says he [in despair], “My Lord has humiliated me!”

89:17

كـَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا تُكۡرِمُونَ ٱلۡيَتِيمَ ١٧

Nay! But you honour not the orphan!

89:18

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ ١٨

Nor do you encourage one another to feed the poor!

89:19

وَتَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكۡلٗا لَّمّٗا ١٩

And you devour inheritancewith greed,

89:20

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡمَالَ حُبّٗا جَمّٗا ٢٠

And you love wealth with inordinate lust!

89:21

كـَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ دَكّٗا دَكّٗا ٢١

Nay! When the earth is pounded to smithereens,

89:22

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلۡمَلَكُ صَفّٗا صَفّٗا ٢٢

And your Lord will come with the angels, rank upon rank,

89:23

وَجِاْيٓءَ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بِجَهَنَّمَۚ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ ٢٣

and Hell, that Day, will be brought [face to face]. On that Day will Man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?

89:24

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَيَاتِي ٢٤

He will say: “Ah! Would that I had sent forth [good deeds for my [future] life!”

89:25

فَيَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٞ ٢٥

For, that Day, His punishment will be such as none [else] can inflict,

89:26

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٞ ٢٦

And His fetters will be such as none [other] can bind with.

89:27

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفۡسُ ٱلۡمُطۡمَئِنَّةُ ٢٧

[The righteous soul will be told:] “O [you] the satisfied soul!

89:28

ٱرۡجِعِيٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةٗ مَّرۡضِيَّةٗ ٢٨

“Return to your Lord, well-pleased (yourself), and well-pleased by Him!

89:29

فَٱدۡخُلِي فِي عِبَٰدِي ٢٩

“So, enter, then, the ranks of My servants!

89:30

وَٱدۡخُلِي جَنَّتِي ٣٠

“And, enter My Paradise!”

سُورَةُ البَلَدِ90. The Town

90:1

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ١

Nay, I do swear by this Town;

90:2

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ٢

and, you are freein this Town.

90:3

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ ٣

By the begetter and that he begot.

90:4

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ ٤

Verily, We have created Man into toil.

90:5

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ ٥

Does he think that none can overpower him?

90:6

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا ٦

He says [boastfully]: “Wealth have I squandered in abundance!”

90:7

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ٧

Does he [Man] think that none watches him?

90:8

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ ٨

Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?

90:9

وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ ٩

and a tongue, and a pair of lips?

90:10

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ ١٠

and shown him the two pathways?

90:11

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ ١١

But he ventured not into the path that is steep.

90:12

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ ١٢

And what will explain to you the path that is steep?

90:13

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ١٣

[It is:] freeing a slave;

90:14

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ ١٤

or feeding [the poor] on a day of hunger,

90:15

يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ ١٥

[feeding] an orphan relative,

90:16

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ ١٦

or [feeding] an indigent [down] in the dust.

90:17

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ ١٧

Then he was of those who believed and exhorted each other to endure patiently and exhorted each other to do [acts of] mercy.

90:18

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ١٨

Such are the People of the Right Hand.

90:19

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ١٩

But those who rejected Our Signs are the [unhappy] People of the Left Hand.

90:20

عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ ٢٠

On them will be Fire vaulted over [all round].

سُورَةُ الشَّمۡسِ91. The Sun

91:1

وَٱلشَّمۡسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ١

By the Sun and its [glorious] splendour [during the day];

91:2

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ٢

and the Moon as it follows it [the Sun];

91:3

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ٣

and the Day as it shows up [the Sun’s] glory;

91:4

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰهَا ٤

and the Night as it conceals it [the Sun’s glory];

91:5

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا ٥

and the Firmament and its [wonderful] structure;

91:6

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا ٦

and the Earth and its [wide] expanse:

91:7

وَنَفۡسٖ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ٧

and the Soul, and the [due] proportion [and order] given to it;

91:8

فَأَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقۡوَىٰهَا ٨

and its inspiration as to the wrong and the right;

91:9

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا ٩

Truly, he succeeds that purifies it [his soul];

91:10

وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا ١٠

and he fails that corrupts it [soul]!

91:11

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِطَغۡوَىٰهَآ ١١

The Thamūd[people] disbelieved [their Prophet] out of their rebellion,

91:12

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشۡقَىٰهَا ١٢

when the most wicked [man] among them came forward.

91:13

فَقَالَ لَهُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقۡيَٰهَا ١٣

So the Messenger of Allāh said to them: “[It is] a she-camel of Allāh! So [take care of] her drink!”

91:14

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمۡدَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمۡ فَسَوَّىٰهَا ١٤

[But] they disbelieved him, and they slaughtered her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them.

91:15

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقۡبَٰهَا ١٥

And He fears not its consequences.

سُورَةُ اللَّيۡلِ92. The Night

92:1

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰ ١

By the Night as it covers [the light of the Day];

92:2

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ٢

and the Day as it manifests in glory;

92:3

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ ٣

and the creation of the male and the female.

92:4

إِنَّ سَعۡيَكُمۡ لَشَتَّىٰ ٤

Verily, [the ends] you strive for are diverse.

92:5

فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أَعۡطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ٥

So the one who gives [in charity] and fears [Allāh],

92:6

وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ ٦

and [in all sincerity] testifies to the Best,

92:7

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ ٧

We will indeed make smooth for him the Path to Ease.

92:8

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ ٨

But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,

92:9

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ ٩

and who disbelieves the Best [Message],

92:10

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلۡعُسۡرَىٰ ١٠

We will indeed make smooth for him the Path to Misery;

92:11

وَمَا يُغۡنِي عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ ١١

nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong [into the Pit of Fire].

92:12

إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا لَلۡهُدَىٰ ١٢

Verily, We take [it] upon Us to guide,

92:13

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلۡأٓخِرَةَ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ ١٣

And, verily, unto Us [belong] the End and the Beginning [of Life].

92:14

فَأَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ نَارٗا تَلَظَّىٰ ١٤

Therefore, I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely.

92:15

لَا يَصۡلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلۡأَشۡقَى ١٥

None shall burn therein but the most wicked,

92:16

ٱلَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ١٦

who disbelieved [Truth] and turned his back.

92:17

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلۡأَتۡقَى ١٧

[But] the most fearful [of Allāh] shall be saved from it,

92:18

ٱلَّذِي يُؤۡتِي مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ ١٨

the one who spends his wealth seeking self-purification,

92:19

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعۡمَةٖ تُجۡزَىٰٓ ١٩

and he spends not to return a favour from someone,

92:20

إِلَّا ٱبۡتِغَآءَ وَجۡهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ٢٠

[he has nothing] but the desire to seek for the Pleasure of his Lord, Most-High;

92:21

وَلَسَوۡفَ يَرۡضَىٰ ٢١

and soon will he attain [complete] satisfaction.

سُورَةُ الضُّحَى93. The Morning Light

93:1

وَٱلضُّحَىٰ ١

By the Morning Light,

93:2

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ ٢

and the Night when its [darkness] overwhelms,

93:3

مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ ٣

your Lord has not abandoned you, nor has He shunned [you].

93:4

وَلَلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ لَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ٤

And, verily, the Hereafter is better for you than the present [life].

93:5

وَلَسَوۡفَ يُعۡطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرۡضَىٰٓ ٥

And soon will your Lord give you [that wherewith] you shall be well-pleased.

93:6

أَلَمۡ يَجِدۡكَ يَتِيمٗا فَـَٔاوَىٰ ٦

Did He not find you [O Prophet] an orphan and gave you shelter [and care]?

93:7

وَوَجَدَكَ ضَآلّٗا فَهَدَىٰ ٧

And He foundyou wandering [unguided],and He guided [you],

93:8

وَوَجَدَكَ عَآئِلٗا فَأَغۡنَىٰ ٨

and He found you in need, so He freed you from want.

93:9

فَأَمَّا ٱلۡيَتِيمَ فَلَا تَقۡهَرۡ ٩

Therefore, treat not the orphan with harshness,

93:10

وَأَمَّا ٱلسَّآئِلَ فَلَا تَنۡهَرۡ ١٠

nor chide him who asks;

93:11

وَأَمَّا بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثۡ ١١

And the Favours of your Lord — proclaim them!

سُورَةُ الشَّرۡحِ94. The Expansion

94:1

أَلَمۡ نَشۡرَحۡ لَكَ صَدۡرَكَ ١

[O Prophet] Did We not expand for you your breast?

94:2

وَوَضَعۡنَا عَنكَ وِزۡرَكَ ٢

And removed from you your burden,

94:3

ٱلَّذِيٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهۡرَكَ ٣

which did break your back?

94:4

وَرَفَعۡنَا لَكَ ذِكۡرَكَ ٤

And raised high the esteem [in which] you [are held]?

94:5

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرًا ٥

So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief:

94:6

إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرٗا ٦

verily, with every difficulty there is relief.

94:7

فَإِذَا فَرَغۡتَ فَٱنصَبۡ ٧

Therefore, when you are free [from your obligatory prayers], still labour hard,

94:8

وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرۡغَب ٨

and to your Lord turn [all] your attention.

سُورَةُ التِّينِ95. The Fig

95:1

وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيۡتُونِ ١

By the Fig and the Olive,

95:2

وَطُورِ سِينِينَ ٢

and the Mount of Sinai,

95:3

وَهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ٱلۡأَمِينِ ٣

and this Secure Town,

95:4

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِيٓ أَحۡسَنِ تَقۡوِيمٖ ٤

We have indeed created Man in the best of form,

95:5

ثُمَّ رَدَدۡنَٰهُ أَسۡفَلَ سَٰفِلِينَ ٥

then do We abase him [to be] the lowest of the low,

95:6

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَلَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونٖ ٦

except such as believe [in Allāh] and do righteous deeds: For these shall have a reward complete [and limitless].

95:7

فَمَا يُكَذِّبُكَ بَعۡدُ بِٱلدِّينِ ٧

What, then, can after this make you [O Man] disbelieve the [Day of the] Judgement?

95:8

أَلَيۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَحۡكَمِ ٱلۡحَٰكِمِينَ ٨

Is Allāh not the Wisest of Judges?

سُورَةُ العَلَقِ96. The Clot

96:1

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ١

Read! In the name of your Lord who created,

96:2

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ ٢

created Man out of a congealed blood clot:

96:3

ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ ٣

Read! And your Lord is Most-Generous,

96:4

ٱلَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ ٤

the One who taught by the Pen,

96:5

عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمۡ يَعۡلَمۡ ٥

taught Man that which he knew not.

96:6

كـَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ ٦

Nay, but Man does transgress [all bounds],

96:7

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰٓ ٧

when he finds himself self-sufficient.

96:8

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰٓ ٨

Verily, to your Lord is the [final] return [of all].

96:9

أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يَنۡهَىٰ ٩

See you one who forbids

96:10

عَبۡدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ ١٠

a servant [of Allāh] when he [turns] to pray?

96:11

أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ ١١

See you if he [the Prophet] is on [the Path of] Guidance?

96:12

أَوۡ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰٓ ١٢

Or enjoins Fear [of Allāh]?

96:13

أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١٣

See you if hedisbelieves [the Truth] and turns away?

96:14

أَلَمۡ يَعۡلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ ١٤

Knows he not that Allāh does see?

96:15

كـَلَّا لَئِن لَّمۡ يَنتَهِ لَنَسۡفَعَۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ ١٥

Let him beware! If he desists not, We will drag him by the forelock,

96:16

نَاصِيَةٖ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٖ ١٦

a lying, sinful forelock [and consign him to Hell]!

96:17

فَلۡيَدۡعُ نَادِيَهُۥ ١٧

Then, let him call [for help] his council [of comrades]:

96:18

سَنَدۡعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ ١٨

We will call on the angels of punishment [to deal with him]!

96:19

كـَلَّا لَا تُطِعۡهُ وَٱسۡجُدۡۤ وَٱقۡتَرِب۩ ١٩

Nay, heed him not: But prostrate in adoration, and bring yourself closer [to Allāh]!

سُورَةُ القَدۡرِ97. The Destiny

97:1

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ فِي لَيۡلَةِ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ ١

We have indeed revealed this [Message] in the Night of Destiny:

97:2

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا لَيۡلَةُ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ ٢

And what will explain to you what the Night of Destiny is?

97:3

لَيۡلَةُ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ خَيۡرٞ مِّنۡ أَلۡفِ شَهۡرٖ ٣

The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months.

97:4

تَنَزَّلُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمۡرٖ ٤

Therein descend the angels and the Spiritby their Lord’s permission, on every errand:

97:5

سَلَٰمٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطۡلَعِ ٱلۡفَجۡرِ ٥

[It’s all] Peace [and goodness lasting] until the rise of Dawn!

سُورَةُ البَيِّنَةِ98. The Clear Evidence

98:1

لَمۡ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأۡتِيَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ ١

Those who reject [the Message], among the People of the Book and among the polytheists, were not going to depart [from their ways] until there should come to them Clear Evidence:

98:2

رَسُولٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ يَتۡلُواْ صُحُفٗا مُّطَهَّرَةٗ ٢

a Messenger from Allāh,rehearsing Scriptures pure:

98:3

فِيهَا كُتُبٞ قَيِّمَةٞ ٣

whereinare books upright.

98:4

وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ ٤

Nor did the People of the Book get divided, until after there came to them the Clear Evidence.

98:5

وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ ٥

And they had been commanded no more than to worship Allāh, offering Him sincere devotion, being Upright [in faith]; to establish [regular] Prayer; and to pay Zakāt; and that is the Upright Faith.

98:6

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ شَرُّ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ ٦

Those who rejected [the Message] among the People of the Book and the polytheists, will be in Hell-Fire, to dwell therein forever. They are the worst of creatures.

98:7

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ ٧

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds are the best of creatures.

98:8

جَزَآؤُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتُ عَدۡنٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدٗاۖ رَّضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُۥ ٨

Their reward is with their Lord: Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow; they will dwell therein forever; Allāh will be well pleased with them, and they with Him. All this is for such as fear their Lord.

سُورَةُ الزَّلۡزَلَةِ99. The Earthquake

99:1

إِذَا زُلۡزِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زِلۡزَالَهَا ١

When the Earth will be shaken to her [utmost] convulsion,

99:2

وَأَخۡرَجَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَثۡقَالَهَا ٢

And the earth will throw up her burdens [from within],

99:3

وَقَالَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا لَهَا ٣

And Man will cry out [distressed]: “What is the matter with her [the Earth]?”

99:4

يَوۡمَئِذٖ تُحَدِّثُ أَخۡبَارَهَا ٤

On that Day will she [the Earth] declare her tidings:

99:5

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوۡحَىٰ لَهَا ٥

that your Lord has inspired her [the Earth].

99:6

يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتٗا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ ٦

On that Day will people proceed in scattered groups, to see the Deeds that they [had done].

99:7

فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرٗا يَرَهُۥ ٧

Then anyone who has done an atom’s weight of good [deeds], shall see it!

99:8

وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ شَرّٗا يَرَهُۥ ٨

And anyone who has done an atom’s weight of evil, shall see it.

سُورَةُ العَادِيَاتِ100. The Chargers

100:1

وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ ضَبۡحٗا ١

By the [steeds] that charge, with panting [breath],

100:2

فَٱلۡمُورِيَٰتِ قَدۡحٗا ٢

and strike sparks of fire [with their horseshoes],

100:3

فَٱلۡمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبۡحٗا ٣

and push home the charge, at dawn,

100:4

فَأَثَرۡنَ بِهِۦ نَقۡعٗا ٤

and raise the dust,

100:5

فَوَسَطۡنَ بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا ٥

and penetrate forthwith into the midst [of the enemies] en masse.

100:6

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٞ ٦

Truly, Man is, to his Lord, ungrateful;

100:7

وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٞ ٧

and to that [fact] he bears witness [by his deeds];

100:8

وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلۡخَيۡرِ لَشَدِيدٌ ٨

and tenacious is he in his love of wealth.

100:9

أَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ إِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِي ٱلۡقُبُورِ ٩

Does he not know, when that which is in the graves is brought out,

100:10

وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي ٱلصُّدُورِ ١٠

and that which is [locked up] in hearts is made manifest,

100:11

إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّخَبِيرُۢ ١١

that their Lord will be All-Knowing of them, that Day?

سُورَةُ القَارِعَةِ101. The Striker

101:1

ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ ١

The [Hour] of the Striker!

101:2

مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ ٢

What is the [Hour of] the Striker?

101:3

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ ٣

And what will explain to you what [the Hour of] the Striker is?

101:4

يَوۡمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلۡفَرَاشِ ٱلۡمَبۡثُوثِ ٤

[It is] a Day whereon people will be like moths scattered around,

101:5

وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ٱلۡمَنفُوشِ ٥

and the mountainswill be like loosened wool.

101:6

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ٦

Then, he whose balance [of good deeds] will be [found] heavy,

101:7

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٖ رَّاضِيَةٖ ٧

will be in a life of satisfaction,

101:8

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ٨

but he whose balance [of good deeds] will be [found] light,

101:9

فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٞ ٩

will have his home in a [bottomless] Pit.

101:10

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهۡ ١٠

And what will explain to you what it is?

101:11

نَارٌ حَامِيَةُۢ ١١

[It is] a Fire blazing fiercely!

سُورَةُ التَّكَاثُرِ102. The Competition in Piling Up Wealth

102:1

أَلۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ ١

The mutual race for piling up [wealth] diverted you [from the more serious things],

102:2

حَتَّىٰ زُرۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَقَابِرَ ٢

until you visit [reach] the graves.

102:3

كـَلَّا سَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٣

[But,] nay, you soon shall know [the reality].

102:4

ثُمَّ كـَلَّا سَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٤

Again, you soon shall know [the reality]!

102:5

كـَلَّا لَوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عِلۡمَ ٱلۡيَقِينِ ٥

Nay, were you to know with certainty [you would beware!]

102:6

لَتَرَوُنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ ٦

You shall certainly see Hell-Fire!

102:7

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيۡنَ ٱلۡيَقِينِ ٧

Again, you shall see it with the certainty of sight!

102:8

ثُمَّ لَتُسۡـَٔلُنَّ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٨

Then, that Day shall you be questioned about the comforts [you enjoyed!].

سُورَةُ العَصۡرِ103. The Time

103:1

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ ١

By the Time!

103:2

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَفِي خُسۡرٍ ٢

Verily, Man is in a loss,

103:3

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ ٣

except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and exhort each other to [adhere to] Truth and exhort each other to endure patiently.

سُورَةُ الهُمَزَةِ104. The Backbiter

104:1

وَيۡلٞ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٖ لُّمَزَةٍ ١

Woe to every backbiter and slanderer,

104:2

ٱلَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالٗا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ ٢

who piles up wealth and keeps counting it,

104:3

يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخۡلَدَهُۥ ٣

thinking that his wealth would make him immortal!

104:4

كـَلَّاۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِي ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ ٤

Never! He will sure be thrown into [Hell] which smashes to pieces.

104:5

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحُطَمَةُ ٥

And what will explain to you that which smashes to pieces?

104:6

نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ ٦

[It is] the Fire of Allāh, kindled [to a blaze],

104:7

ٱلَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةِ ٧

which does mount [right] to the hearts.

104:8

إِنَّهَا عَلَيۡهِم مُّؤۡصَدَةٞ ٨

It shall be made into a vault over them,

104:9

فِي عَمَدٖ مُّمَدَّدَةِۭ ٩

in columns outstretched.

سُورَةُ الفِيلِ105. The Elephant

105:1

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ ١

See you not how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant?

105:2

أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِي تَضۡلِيلٖ ٢

Did He not make their treacherous plan go astray?

105:3

وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ ٣

And He sent against them waves of birds,

105:4

تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٖ مِّن سِجِّيلٖ ٤

striking them with stones of baked clay.

105:5

فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٖ مَّأۡكُولِۭ ٥

So, He made them like empty straw [of which the grain] has been separated.

سُورَةُ قُرَيۡشٍ106. The Quraysh

106:1

لِإِيلَٰفِ قُرَيۡشٍ ١

For the convenienceof the Quraysh,

106:2

إِۦلَٰفِهِمۡ رِحۡلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيۡفِ ٢

their convenience with the journeys by winter and by summer,

106:3

فَلۡيَعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّ هَٰذَا ٱلۡبَيۡتِ ٣

so let them worship the Lord of this House,

106:4

ٱلَّذِيٓ أَطۡعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٖ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنۡ خَوۡفِۭ ٤

Who provides them with food against hunger, and with security against fear.

سُورَةُ المَاعُونِ107. The Articles of Need

107:1

أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ ١

See you one who disbelieves the [Day of] Judgement [to come]?

107:2

فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِي يَدُعُّ ٱلۡيَتِيمَ ٢

That is the one who repulses the orphan,

107:3

وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ ٣

and [the one] who encourages not [others] to feed the indigent.

107:4

فَوَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُصَلِّينَ ٤

So woe to the worshippers

107:5

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَن صَلَاتِهِمۡ سَاهُونَ ٥

who are forgetful of their Prayers,

107:6

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ يُرَآءُونَ ٦

those who make a show [of their deeds],

107:7

وَيَمۡنَعُونَ ٱلۡمَاعُونَ ٧

and refuse [to share even small] articles of need[with their neighbours].

سُورَةُ الكَوۡثَرِ108. The Abundant

108:1

إِنَّآ أَعۡطَيۡنَٰكَ ٱلۡكَوۡثَرَ ١

To you [O Prophet] have We granted the Kawthar.

108:2

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنۡحَرۡ ٢

Therefore, to your Lord turn in Prayer and offer sacrifice.

108:3

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلۡأَبۡتَرُ ٣

For he who berates you will be cut off [from Hope].

سُورَةُ الكَافِرُونَ109. The Rejecters

109:1

قُلۡ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ ١

Say: O You the Rejecters [of the Message]!

109:2

لَآ أَعۡبُدُ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ٢

I worship not that which you worship,

109:3

وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ عَٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعۡبُدُ ٣

nor you worship that which I worship.

109:4

وَلَآ أَنَا۠ عَابِدٞ مَّا عَبَدتُّمۡ ٤

And I will not worship that which you have been wont to worship,

109:5

وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ عَٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعۡبُدُ ٥

nor will you worship that which I worship.

109:6

لَكُمۡ دِينُكُمۡ وَلِيَ دِينِ ٦

To you be your faith, and to me mine.

سُورَةُ النَّصۡرِ110. The Victory

110:1

إِذَا جَآءَ نَصۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡفَتۡحُ ١

When comes the Help of Allāh, and Victory,

110:2

وَرَأَيۡتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدۡخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفۡوَاجٗا ٢

And you do see people enter Allāh’s Religion in droves,

110:3

فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابَۢا ٣

So, celebrate the Praises of your Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: For He is Oft-Forgiving.

سُورَةُ المَسَدِ111. The Palm Fibre

111:1

تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٖ وَتَبَّ ١

Perish both the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he!

111:2

مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ٢

All his wealth and all his gains did not profit him.

111:3

سَيَصۡلَىٰ نَارٗا ذَاتَ لَهَبٖ ٣

Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!

111:4

وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلۡحَطَبِ ٤

And his wife shall carry the [crackling] wood [as fuel]!

111:5

فِي جِيدِهَا حَبۡلٞ مِّن مَّسَدِۭ ٥

a twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre will be round her neck!

سُورَةُ الإِخۡلَاصِ112. The Sincerity

112:1

قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١

Say: He is Allāh, The One;

112:2

ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ٢

Allāh, The Lord;

112:3

لَمۡ يَلِدۡ وَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ ٣

He begot none, nor is He begotten;

112:4

وَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدُۢ ٤

and none ever was equal to Him.

سُورَةُ الفَلَقِ113. The Dawn

113:1

قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡفَلَقِ ١

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord-of-the-Dawn,

113:2

مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ٢

from the evil of what He created;

113:3

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ٣

and from the evil of dark [night] as it overspreads;

113:4

وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِي ٱلۡعُقَدِ ٤

and from the evil of those [women] who blow on knots;

113:5

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ٥

and from the evil of the envious one as he practices envy.

سُورَةُ النَّاسِ114. The People

114:1

قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ ١

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of Mankind,

114:2

مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٢

the Sovereign of Mankind,

114:3

إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٣

the God of Mankind,

114:4

مِن شَرِّ ٱلۡوَسۡوَاسِ ٱلۡخَنَّاسِ ٤

from the evil of the Whisperer [of Evil] who shrinks [at the mention of Allāh],

114:5

ٱلَّذِي يُوَسۡوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٥

who whispers into the hearts of people

114:6

مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ ٦

among Jinnsand humans.
