The Cattle

Bismillah
6:1
Praise be to Allāh, who created the heavens and the earth, and made the Darkness and the Light. Yet those who reject [Faith] make [others] co-partners to their Sustainer.
6:2
He it is who created you from clay, and then decreed a term [period] [for you]. And there is with Him another determined term;1yet you doubt [Allāh’s powers]!2
6:3
And He is Allāh in the heavens and in earth. He knows what you hide, and what you reveal, and He knows what you earn [your deeds and misdeeds].
6:4
Never did a single one of the Signs of their Lord reach them, but they turned away therefrom.
6:5
They disbelieved the Truth when it reached them: but soon shall come to them the reality of what they used to mock.
6:6
See they not how many of those [generations] before them We did destroy? — generations We had [firmly] established on the earth, [which enjoyed] strength such as We have not given to you — for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and made streams flow beneath their [feet]. Yet for their sins, We destroyed them, and raised in their wake new generations [to succeed them].
6:7
[Even] if We had sent unto you a written [Message] on a parchment, so that they could touch it with their hands, yet the Rejecters [of Truth] would have said: “This is nothing but manifest magic!”
6:8
And they said: “Why is not an angel sent down to him?” Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been settled at once, and no respite would have been granted to them.1
6:9
If We had made it an angel, We should have sent him as a man,1and We should certainly have caused them confusion in a matter which they have already covered with confusion.
6:10
Mocked were [many] Messengers before you [O Prophet]; but their scoffers were hemmed in by what they mocked.
6:11
Say [O Prophet]: “Travel through the earth and see what was the fate of those who disbelieved [Truth].”
6:12
Say [O Prophet]: “To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth?” Say: “To Allāh!” He has set for Himself [the rule of] Mercy.1He will certainly gather you together for the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt whatsoever. [But] those who have lost their souls will not believe.
6:13
“To him belongs all that dwells in the Night and the Day. And He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
6:14
Say [O Prophet]: “Shall I take for my guardian any other than Allāh, the Originator of the heavens and the earth? And He it is who feeds but is not fed.” Say: “Nay! I am commanded to be the first of those who submit [to Allāh], so you [too] must never be one of the polytheists.”
6:15
Say [O Prophet]: “I would, if I disobeyed my Lord, indeed fear the punishment of a Great Day.
6:16
“On that day, if anyone is saved [from punishment], it is because Allāh had Mercy on him; and that would be the Manifest Success.
6:17
“If Allāh touches you with affliction, none can remove it but He; and if He touches you with goodness, He has the (absolute) power over all things.
6:18
“He is the Subduer of [all] His servants.1And He is the Most-Wise, the All-Knowing.”2
6:19
Say [O Prophet]: “What is most weighty in evidence?” Say: “[Allāh] is witness between me and you. This Qur’ān has been revealed to me so that I warn you and all those whom it reaches. Can you bear witness that besides Allāh there are other gods?” Say: “No! I cannot bear witness!” Say: “In truth, He is the One God. And I truly am clear1of [your blasphemy of] associating others with Him.”
6:20
Those to whom We have given the Book, know this [Scripture] as they know their own sons. [But] those who have lost their souls do not believe.
6:21
Who is more wrongful than he who forged a lie against Allāh or disbelieved His Signs? Verily, the wrongdoers shall never prosper.
6:22
On the day when We shall gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners [to Us]: “Where are your partners which you claimed?”
6:23
Then they will have no excuse but to say: “By Allāh, our Lord, we were not those who associated [gods with You].”
6:24
Behold! How they lie against themselves, and the [lie] which they forged has left them in the lurch.
6:25
Of them there are some who listen to you; but We have cast veils on their hearts, so they understand it not, and deafness is in their ears. If they see each of the Signs, they will not believe in them; so much that when they come to you, they [only] dispute with you. The Rejecters [of Truth] say: “These are nothing but fables of the ancients.”
6:26
Others they forbid it1and themselves they keep away. They only destroy themselves and they perceive it not.
6:27
If you could but see, when they are confronted with the Fire, they will say: “If only we could be sent back! Then would we not disbelieve the Signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!”
6:28
Nay, in their own [eyes] will become manifest [the sins] they concealed [from people] earlier. But if they were returned, they would certainly relapse to what they were forbidden, for they are liars indeed.
6:29
And they said: “There is nothing except our life on this earth, and never shall we be raised up again.”
6:30
If you could but see when they shall be made to stand before their Lord. He will say: “Is this not the truth?” They will say: “Yes, by our Lord.” He will say: “Taste you then the punishment because you rejected [Faith].”
6:31
Lost indeed are those who disbelieve that they will meet Allāh, until on a sudden The Hour1overtakes them, and then they will say: “Ah! Woe unto us that we neglected.” They bear their burdens on their backs. Evil indeed are the burdens that they bear.
6:32
Nothing is the life of this world but play and pastime. And best is the Home in the Hereafter for those who fear [Allāh]. Will you not then understand?
6:33
We know indeed the grief which their words do cause you [O Prophet]. It is not you they disbelieve, but it is the Signs of Allāh which the wrongdoers disacknowledge.1
6:34
Disbelieved were Messengers before you. With patience, they bore their rejection and their persecution until Our help did reach them. There is none who can alter the Words of Allāh. Already you have received some account of the [earlier] Messengers.
6:35
If their spurning is hard on you, yet [it will not suffice to convince them even] if you were able to find a tunnel into the ground or a ladder to the heavens and bring them a Sign. If it were Allāh’s Will, He could gather them together unto [true] guidance. So be not amongst those who are ignorant!
6:36
Those who listen [in truth], be sure, will accept. As to the dead, Allāh will raise them up; then will they be turned unto Him.
6:37
They1say: “Why is not a Sign [Miracle] sent down to him from his Lord!” Say [O Prophet]: “Allāh has certainly power to send down a Sign,” but most of them know not.
6:38
There is not an animal [that lives] on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but are a species like you. Nothing have We omitted from the Book, and they [all] shall be gathered to their Lord [in the end].
6:39
And those who disbelieve Our Sings are deaf and dumb, in the midst of darkness profound. Whom Allāh wills, He leaves to wander astray; and whom He wills, He places on the Path that is Straight.
6:40
Say [O Prophet]: “Think you [to yourselves]: if there comes upon you the Punishment of Allāh, or The Hour1[that you dread], would you then call upon other than Allāh? [Reply] if you are truthful!
6:41
“Nay, but to Him would you pray, and [if it be His Will], He would remove [the distress] which occasioned your call upon Him, and you would forget [the false gods] which you associate Him with!”
6:42
Before you, We sent [Messengers] to [many] nations, and We afflicted them with suffering and adversity, that they might supplicate [Allāh] in humility.
6:43
When Our punishment reached them, why then did they not pray [to Allāh] in humility? On the contrary, their hearts hardened, and the Shayṭān made their [sinful] acts seem fascinating to them.
6:44
When they forgot the warning they had had been reminded about, We opened to them the gates of all [good] things, until, in the midst of their enjoyment of Our gifts, on a sudden, We seized them, when, lo!, they plunged in despair!
6:45
Thus the wrongdoers were uprooted in their entirety. All praise to Allāh, the Sustainer-of-the-Worlds.
6:46
Say [O Prophet]: “Think you, if Allāh took away your [power of] hearing and your sight, and sealed up your hearts, which god other than Allāh could restore them to you?” See how We explain the Signs; yet they turn away [in disdain].
6:47
Say [O Prophet]: “Think you, if the punishment of Allāh overtakes you, suddenly or openly, will any be destroyed except the people given to wrongdoing?
6:48
We send the Messengers only to give good tidings and to warn. So those who believe and mend [their ways], they shall face no fear, nor shall they grieve.
6:49
And those who disbelieve Our Signs, them shall the punishment touch, for they continued transgressing1[Allāh’s commands].
6:50
Say [O Prophet]: “I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allāh, nor do I know what is hidden, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me.” Say [O Prophet]: “Can the blind be equal to the seeing?” Will you then not ponder [over it]?
6:51
Give this warning to those in whose [hearts] is the fear that they will be brought [to Judgement] before their Lord. Except for Him, they will have no guardian nor intercessor — that they may fear [Allāh].
6:52
Drive not away those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His favour.1In nothing are you accountable for them, and in nothing are they accountable for you. Should you drive them away, you will be [one] of the wrongdoers.
6:53
Thus did We test them by one another, that they should say: “Is it these then that Allāh has favoured from amongst us?” Does not Allāh know best those who are grateful?
6:54
When those come to you who believe in Our Signs, say: Peace be on you: Your Lord has obligated for Himself [the rule of] Mercy. Verily, if any of you did evil in ignorance, and thereafter repented, and amended [his conduct], lo!, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
6:55
And thus do We explain the Signs: that the way of the sinners1may become clear to you.
6:56
Say [O Prophet]: “I am forbidden to worship those whom you call upon other than Allāh.” Say: “I will not follow your whims: If I did, I would stray from the path, and be not of those who are guided.”
6:57
Say [O Prophet]: “For me, I am on a clear Sign from my Lord while you disbelieve Him. What you would see hastened, is not in my power. The command rests with none but Allāh. He declares the Truth, and He is the best of judges.”
6:58
Say [O Prophet]: “If what you would see hastened were in my power, the matter would have been settled between you and me. But Allāh knows best the wrongdoers.”
6:59
With Him [Allāh] are the keys of the Unseen that none knows but He. He knows whatever there is on the earth and in the seas. Not a leaf does fall but with His knowledge. There is not a grain in the depths of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry [green or withered], but is [inscribed] in a Book that makes [Truth] manifest.
6:60
It is He who does take your souls by night, and has knowledge of all that you have done by day. Then by day He does raise you up again; that a term appointed be fulfilled. In the end unto Him will be your return; then will He show you the truth of all that you did.
6:61
He is the Subduer of [all] His servants1and He sets guardians over you until death approaches one of you [when] Our angels take his soul, and they never fail in their duty.
6:62
Then are they returned unto Allāh, their True-Protector.1Surely His is the command, and He is the Swiftest-in-Taking-Account.
6:63
Say: “Who is it that will rescue you from the dark recesses of land and sea. [When in danger] you call upon Him in humility and in secret [saying]: ‘If He only delivers us from these [dangers], [we vow] we shall truly show our gratitude’?”
6:64
Say [O Prophet]: “It is Allāh that delivers you from these and all [other] distresses, and yet you associate [with Him false] gods!”
6:65
Say: “He has the power1to send calamities on you, from above you and from below your feet, or to cover you with confusion in party strife and give you a taste of mutual vengeance, each from the other.” See how We explain the Signs in diverse ways, that they may understand.
6:66
[But] your people disbelieved this, though it is the Truth. Say [O Prophet]: “I am not a guardian over your [affairs];”
6:67
“For every prophecy is a limit of time, and soon shall you know it.1
6:68
When you see people engaged in vain discourse about Our Signs, turn away from them until they turn to a different theme. If the Shayṭān ever makes you forget [this], then after recollection, sit you not in the company of the people given to wrongdoing.
6:69
No responsibility falls on those who fear [Allāh], but [their duty] is to remind [others], that they may [learn to] fear [Allāh].
6:70
And shun those who take their religion to be mere play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world. But [continue to] admonish them with it [Qur’ān] lest a soul is consigned to destruction for its misdeeds and find for itself no guardian or intercessor except Allāh. If it offered every reparation, none will be accepted from it. Those are the people who are consigned to destruction for their misdeeds. They will have for drink [only] boiling water, and punishment most painful: For they persisted in rejecting [Faith].
6:71
Say: “Shall we indeed call on others besides Allāh, things that can do us neither good nor harm, and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allāh? — like one whom the Shayṭāns have beguiled him, [leaving him] wandering bewildered through the earth, while his friends call him: ‘Come to us,’ [vainly] calling him to guidance.” Say: “Allāh’s guidance is the [only] guidance, and we have been directed to submit ourselves to the Lord-of-the-worlds;
6:72
“and to establish [regular] Prayers and to fear Him [Allāh]: For it is to Him that you shall be gathered together.”
6:73
It is He who created the heavens and the earth with Truth: the day He said, “Be!” And it is! His word is the Truth. His will be the Sovereignty the day the Trumpet will be blown. He knows the Unseen as well as that which is open [and seen]. For He is the Most-Wise, the All-Knowing.
6:74
And [remember] when Ibrāhīm1said to his father, Āzar: “Take you idols for gods? I see you and your people in manifest deviation.”
6:75
Thus did We show Ibrāhīm the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, that he might have certitude.
6:76
When the night covered him over, he saw a star. He said: “This is my Lord!” But when it set, he said: “I love not those that set!”
6:77
When he saw the Moon rising [spreading light], he said: “This is my Lord!” But when the Moon [too] set, he said: “Unless my Lord guides me, I shall surely be among those who go astray.”
6:78
When he saw the Sun rising [spreading light], he said: “This is my Lord! This is the greatest [of them all]!” But when the Sun [too] set, he said: “O My people! I am indeed clear1from your [sin] of associating partners with God.
6:79
“For me, I have set my face truly towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I be of those who associate partners [with God].”
6:80
His people argued with him. He said: “[How come] you argue with me about God, when He [Himself] has guided me? I fear not [the beings] you associate with God: unless my Lord wills, [nothing can happen]. My Lord encircles in His knowledge all things. Will you not remember?
6:81
“How should I fear [the beings] you associate with God, when you fear not to associate partners with God without any authority having been given to you? Which of [us] two parties has more right to security? [Tell me] if you know!
6:82
“It is those who believe and cover not their beliefs with any wrongdoing,1they will enjoy [total] security, for they are [rightly] guided.”
6:83
That was Our argument which We gave to Ibrāhīm [to use] against his people. We raise whom We will, degree after degree. For your Lord is Most-Wise, All-Knowing.
6:84
We gave him Isḥāq1and Ya‘qūb: all [three] We guided: and before him, We guided Nūḥ.2And among his progeny, Dā’ūd,3Sulaymān,4Ayyūb,5Yūsuf,6Mūsā,7and Hārūn.8Thus do We reward those who do good.
6:85
And [We also guided] Zakarīyā1and Yaḥyā,2and ‘Īsā3and Ilyās (Elijah).4All [of them are] in the ranks of the Righteous,
6:86
and Ismā‘īl1and Alyasa‘ [Elisha],2and Yūnus,3and Lūṭ (Lot).4And all of them We favoured above the [people of the] worlds,
6:87
and their fathers, and their progeny and brethren: We chose them, and We guided them to a Straight Path.
6:88
This is the Guidance of Allāh: He gives Guidance to whom He pleases of His servants.1If they were to join other gods with Him [all], they did will be forfeited.
6:89
Those were the men to whom We gave the Book, and Wisdom,1and Prophethood. If these [their descendants] reject them, behold! We shall entrust their charge to a new people who will reject it not.
6:90
Those were the [prophets] who received Allāh’s Guidance. So follow the guidance they received. Say: “No remuneration for this do I ask of you. This is but a reminder to the worlds.
6:91
No just estimate of Allāh did they make when they said: “Nothing did Allāh send down to any human [by way of revelation].” Say: “Who then sent down the Book which Mūsā brought? — a light and guidance to Mankind. But you make it into [separate] sheets for show, while you conceal much [of its contents]: therein were you taught that which you knew not, neither you nor your fathers.” Say: “Allāh [sent it down].” Then leave them to indulge in their vain discourse.
6:92
And this [Qur’ān] is a blessed Book which We have sent down, confirming [the revelations] which came before it: so that you may warn the Mother of Towns1and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter, believe in this [Book], and they are punctual in their prayers.
6:93
Who can be more wrongful than one who invents a lie against Allāh, or says, “I have received revelation,” when he has received none, or [again] who says, “I can reveal the like of what Allāh has revealed”?1If you could but see how the wrongdoers [do fare] in the agonies of death! When the angels stretch forth their hands [saying], “Yield up your souls: this day shall you receive your reward, a punishment of disgrace, for the lies you used to tell against Allāh, and because you arrogantly [rejected] His Signs!”
6:94
“And behold! You [will] come to Us [on the Day of Judgement] alone as We created you for the first time: And you left behind you all [the wealth] which We bestowed on you. We see not with you your intercessors whom you thought to be partners in your affairs. Now all relations between you [and your intercessors] have been cut off, and your [pet] fancies have left you in the lurch!”
6:95
It is Allāh who causes the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and sprout. He causes the living to issue from the dead. And He is the One to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is Allāh! Then how are you deluded away [from the Truth]?
6:96
He it is the One who cleaves the daybreak [from the darkness]. He made the night for rest, and the Sun and Moon for the reckoning [of time]: That is the determination of the Mighty, the Omniscient.
6:97
It is He who made the stars for you, that you may find guidance with their help through the dark [spaces] of land and sea. We have explained Our Signs for a people who know.
6:98
It is He who has produced you from a single soul. Then there is a resting place and a repository [for all souls].1We explain Our Signs for a people who understand.
6:99
It is He who sends down rain from the skies. With it We produce vegetation of all kinds. From [some], We produce green [crops], out of which We produce close-compounded grain out of the date-palm and its sheaths [or spathes] [come] clusters of dates hanging low and near. And [then there are] orchards of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar [in kind] yet different [in variety]. When they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! İn these things, there are Signs for people who believe.
6:100
They associate the Jinns1with Allāh [in godhood], though it is Allāh who created the Jinns. And they falsely, having no knowledge, invented for Him sons and daughters. Praise and glory be to Him! Exalted is He over what they attribute to Him!
6:101
[He is] the Wonderful Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have a son when He has no consort? He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all things.
6:102
That is Allāh, your Lord! There is no god but He, the Creator of all things: So worship Him [alone]. And He is the Guardian over all things.
6:103
No vision can grasp Him [Allāh], [but] He grasps all vision. He is The Subtle,1The All-Knowing.
6:104
[Say, O Prophet:] “Proofs have come to you from your Lord [to open your eyes]. If any will see, it will be for [the good of] his own self. If any will [act] blind, it will be to his own [harm]. I [the Prophet] am not [here] to watch over your deeds.”
6:105
Thus do We explain the Signs [by various ways],1[to refute] what they say, “You have learnt this [from somebody],” and so that We may make the matter clear to those who know.
6:106
Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord [that] there is no god but He and turn away from the polytheists.
6:107
If it had been Allāh’s will, they would not have joined [false] gods [with Allāh]. We made you not one to watch over their deeds, nor are you set over them as guardian.
6:108
Revile not those whom they call upon [as gods] besides Allāh, lest they, exceeding limits, revile Allāh in their ignorance. Thus have We made fascinating to each people their own doings. In the end, they will return to their Lord and He shall then tell them all that they did.
6:109
They swear their strongest oaths by Allāh that if a Sign1came to them, they would believe in it. Say: “Certainly [all] Signs are in the power of Allāh: but what will make you [O Muslims] realise that [even] if Signs came [to them], they will not believe?”
6:110
We turn to [confusion] their hearts and their eyes, even as they refused to believe in this in the first instance. We leave them in their rebellion, to waver blindly.
6:111
Even if We did send unto them angels, and the dead did speak unto them, and We gathered together all things before their eyes, they are not the ones to believe unless it is in Allāh’s Wish. But most of them are ignorant [of the Truth].
6:112
Thus, did We make for every Prophet an enemy — satans from among humans and Jinns1—who inspire each other with flowery discourses by way of deception. If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they forge.
6:113
To such [deceit] let the hearts of those incline, who have no faith in the Hereafter: and let them delight in it, and let them earn from it what they may.
6:114
[Say] “Shall I seek for judge other than Allāh, when He it is who has sent unto you the Book, explained [in detail]?” Whom We have given The Book, know that it has been sent down from your Lord in Truth. So, never be of those who doubt.
6:115
And the Word of your Lord is perfect in truth and in justice:1None can change His words. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
6:116
Were you to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead you away from the Path of Allāh. They follow nothing but conjecture: they do nothing but forge lies.
6:117
Your Lord knows best who strays from His Path, and He knows best who are the guided ones.
6:118
So eat of [meats] on which Allāh’s name has been pronounced, if you have faith in His Signs.
6:119
Why should you not eat of [meats] on which Allāh’s name has been pronounced, when He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except [what you have to eat or drink] under compulsion?1But many do mislead [people] by whims, without knowledge. Your Lord knows best those who violate [limits].
6:120
And shun all sin, open or secret. Those who earn sin will get [due] recompense for their misdeeds.
6:121
Eat not of [meats] on which Allāh’s name has not been pronounced: That is transgression [of Allāh’s command]. But the satans ever inspire their friends to argue with you. If you were to obey them, you would indeed become polytheists.
6:122
Can he, who was dead and We gave him life and Light whereby he can walk amongst people, be like one who is in the depths of darkness, from which he can never come out? Thus to those who reject [Faith] their own deeds seem fascinating.
6:123
Thus have We made in every town its leading sinners plot. But they plot only against their own selves, and they perceive it not.
6:124
When there comes to them a Sign [from Allāh], they say: “We shall not believe until we receive one like those received by Allāh’s Messengers.”1Allāh knows best where [and in whom] to place His mission. Soon will the sinful be overtaken by humiliation before Allāh, and by severe punishment for all their plots.
6:125
Those whom Allāh wills to guide, He opens their breasts to the Islām;1those whom He wills to leave straying, He makes their breasts close and constricted, as if they were ascending to the skies.2Thus does Allāh lay abomination on those who do not believe.
6:126
This is the Path of your Lord, Straight. We have detailed the Signs for those who receive admonition.
6:127
For them will be the Home of Peace with their Lord. He will be their Guardian because of what they did.
6:128
[Remember] the day when He [Allāh] will gather them all together, [and will say]: “O You the assembly of Jinns,1much [toll] did you take of humans.” Their votaries amongst humans will say: “Our Lord! We profited from each other: but [alas!] we reached our term which You did appoint for us.” He will say: “The Fire be your dwelling-place: you will dwell therein forever, except as Allāh wills.” For your Lord is Most-Wise and All-Knowing.
6:129
Thus do We make the wrongdoers turn to each other [as friends] because of what they used to earn.
6:130
“O You, the assembly of Jinns and humans! Came there not unto you Messengers from amongst you, relating unto you My Signs, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say: “We bear witness against ourselves.” It was the life of this world that deceived them. So against themselves they will bear witness that they were Rejecters [of Faith].
6:131
[The Messengers were sent] thus, for your Lord would not destroy the towns unjustly whilst its people were ignorant [unwarned].1
6:132
To all are degrees [ranks] according to their deeds, for your Lord is not oblivious of what they do.
6:133
Your Lord is the Free-of-All-Want,1the Full-of-Mercy: if it were His will, He could destroy you, and in your place appoint whom He will as your successors, just as He raised you up from the posterity of other people.
6:134
All that you are warned about will come to pass and you cannot frustrate it [in the least].
6:135
Say [O Prophet]: “O My people! Do whatever you can, I will do [my part]. Soon will you know who it is whose end will be [best] in the Hereafter. Certain it is that the wrongdoers will not prosper.”
6:136
Out of what Allāh has produced in abundance in tilth and in cattle, they assign Him a share. They say, according to their fancies: “This is for Allāh, and this is for our “partners!” But the share of their “partners” reaches not Allāh, whilst the share of Allāh reaches their “partners!” Evil indeed is their Judgement.
6:137
Thus, in the eyes of many of the polytheists, their partners [satans] made alluring the slaughter of their [own] children, in order to lead them to their own destruction, and cause confusion in their religion. If Allāh had willed, they would not have done so. So leave them alone and what they have forged.
6:138
And they say that such and such cattle and crops are forbidden, and none should eat of them except those whom — so they say — we wish.1Further, there are cattle forbidden to yoke or burden, and cattle on which [at slaughter], the name of Allāh is not pronounced: forging a lie against His [Allāh’s] name. Soon will He requite them for what they forged.
6:139
They [also] say: “What is in the bellies of such and such cattle is specially reserved [for food] of our men, and forbidden to our women; but if it is still-born, then all have shares therein.1For their [false] attribution [of superstitions to Allāh], He will soon punish them: For He is Most-Wise, All-Knowing.
6:140
Lost are those who slay their children, out of folly, and without knowledge, and [who] forbid food which Allāh has provided for them, forging [lies] against Allāh. They have indeed gone astray and heeded no guidance.
6:141
It is He who originates orchards, with trellises and without, and dates, and crops [from seeds] of different kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar [in kind] and different [in variety]. Eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered.1And waste not by excess: for Allāh loves not the wasteful.
6:142
Of the cattle are some for burden1and some for meat:2Eat what Allāh has provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of the Shayṭān: for he is to you an enemy manifest.
6:143
[Take] eight [heads of cattle] in [four] pairs: of sheep a pair, and of goats a pair; say, has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or [the young] which the wombs of the two females enclose? Tell me with knowledge if you are truthful:
6:144
Of camels [take] a pair, and of oxen a pair; say, has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or [the young] which the wombs of the two females enclose? Were you present when Allāh commanded you to do such a thing? So who is more wrongful than one who forges a lie against Allāh, to lead people astray, without knowledge?1Allāh guides not people given to wrongdoing.
6:145
Say: “I find not in the Message revealed to me any [meat] forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or pork, for it is filth, or, impurity1on which a name has been invoked other than Allāh’s.” But [even so], if a person is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience [to Allāh], nor transgressing limits, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
6:146
For those who followed Judaism, We forbade every [animal] with undivided hoof. And We forbade them the fat of the ox and the sheep except what adheres to their backs or their entrails, or is mixed up with a bone. This [was] in recompense for their wilful disobedience: for We are True [in Our Ordinances].
6:147
If they disbelieve you [O Prophet], say: “Your Lord is Full of All-Embracing Mercy; but from sinful people never will His punishment be turned back.
6:148
Those who associate partners [with Allāh] will say: “If Allāh had wished, we should not have associated partners with Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have made anything unlawful.” So did their ancestors disbelieve [the Truth], until they tasted Our punishment. Say [O Prophet]: “Have you any [certain] knowledge? If so, produce it before us. You follow nothing but conjecture: you do nothing but forge lies.”
6:149
Say: “With Allāh is the [excellent] argument that reaches home. If it had been His will, He would indeed have guided you all.”
6:150
Say: “Bring forward your witnesses who would witness that Allāh did outlaw so and so.” If they bring such witnesses, be not you among them, nor follow you the whims of those who disbelieved Our Signs, and those who believe not in the Hereafter: for they hold [others] as equal with their Lord.
6:151
Say [O Prophet]: “Come, I will read [to you] what Allāh has [really] prohibited you from:” associate not anything with Him; be nice to [your] parents; kill not your children on a plea of want — We provide sustenance for you and for them — come not close to lewd deeds, whether open or in secret; take not life, which Allāh has made sacred, except by way of justice. Thus does He [Allāh] command you, that you may understand.
6:152
And approach not the orphan’s property except to improve it following the best [way and intentions], until he [/she] attains the age of full strength; give measure and weight with [full] justice. No burden do We place on any soul except what it can bear. Whenever you speak, speak justly, even if against a near relative; and fulfil the Covenant of Allāh. Thus does He command you, that you may remember.
6:153
Verily, this is My Path, [leading] straight: follow it: and follow not [other] paths; they will separate you from His Path. Thus does He command you, that you may fear [Allāh].
6:154
Then We gave Mūsā the Book, completing [Our favour] to the one who did right, explaining all things in detail, and as a guide and mercy, that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord [in the Hereafter].
6:155
And this [Qur’ān] is a Blessed Book which We have revealed: so follow it and fear [Allāh] so that you may be treated with mercy:
6:156
lest you should say: “The Book was sent down to two groups before us, and for our part, we were unaware of what they studied;”1
6:157
or lest you should say: “If the Book had only been sent down to us, we should have followed its guidance better than they.” Now then has come unto you a Clear [Sign] from your Lord, and a guide and a mercy. So who is more wrongful than one who disbelieves Allāh’s Signs, and turns away therefrom? Soon shall We requite those who turn away [in disdain] from Our Signs, with a dreadful punishment for their turning away [in disdain].
6:158
Are they waiting until the angels come to them, or your Sustainer [Himself], or come certain Signs of your Lord? The day that certain Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a soul to believe then if it had believed not before nor earned righteousness through its Faith. Say [O Prophet]: “Wait you: we too are waiting.”
6:159
As for those who divided their religion and broke up into sects, you should have no part in them in the least. Verily, their affair is left to Allāh: He will in the end tell them [the truth of] all that they did.
6:160
He who does good shall have [the recompense] ten times as much to his credit, and he who does evil shall only be recompensed according to his evil. No wrong shall be done unto them.
6:161
Say: “Verily, my Lord has guided me to a Path that is straight, a religion of right, the Faith of Ibrāhīm, the upright [in faith], and he [certainly] was not of those who associated gods [with Allāh].”
6:162
Say [O Prophet]: “Truly, my prayer and my [service of] sacrifice, my life and my death, are [all] for Allāh, the Sustainer-of-the-Worlds.”
6:163
“No partner has He. This am I commanded,1and I am the first of those who submit to His will.”
6:164
Say: “Shall I seek as [my] Lord other than Allāh as Sustainer, when He is the Sustainer of all things [that exist]? Every soul draws the burden of its acts on none but itself. No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another. Your return in the end is to Allāh: He will tell you the truth of the things wherein you disputed.”
6:165
It is He who has made you the inheritors of the earth. He has raised you in ranks, some above others: that He may test you in [the favours] He has given you. Verily, your Lord is quick in punishment, and He is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
