سُورَةُ لُقۡمَانَ

Luqmān

31:1

الٓمٓ ١

Alif. Lām. Mīm.¹

31:2

تِلۡكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ ٢

These are the Verses of the Wise Book,

31:3

هُدٗى وَرَحۡمَةٗ لِّلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ٣

a Guide and a Mercy to the Doers of Good,

31:4

ٱلَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَهُم بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ ٤

those who establish [regular] Prayer, and pay Zakāt, and have sure faith in the Hereafter.

31:5

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ٥

Those are on [true] guidance from their Lord; and those are the ones who will succeed.

31:6

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشۡتَرِي لَهۡوَ ٱلۡحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٖ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ مُّهِينٞ ٦

There are, among people, those who purchase idle tales to mislead [people] from the Path of Allāh without knowledge, and use it to make merry:¹for such there will be a humiliating punishment.

31:7

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسۡتَكۡبِرٗا كَأَن لَّمۡ يَسۡمَعۡهَا كَأَنَّ فِيٓ أُذُنَيۡهِ وَقۡرٗاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٧

When Our Verses are recited to such a one, he turns away in arrogance, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in both his ears: announce to them the tidings of a painful punishment.

31:8

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنَّٰتُ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٨

For those who believe and do righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of Bliss,

31:9

خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٗاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٩

to dwell therein forever, as the promise of Allāh is true: and He is the Mighty, the Most-Wise.

31:10

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ بِغَيۡرِ عَمَدٖ تَرَوۡنَهَاۖ وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَٰسِيَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمۡ وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَآبَّةٖۚ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجٖ كَرِيمٍ ١٠

He created the heavens without any pillars that you can see;¹He set on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should shake with you;²and He scattered through it animals of all kinds. And We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of creation, in noble pairs.³

31:11

هَٰذَا خَلۡقُ ٱللَّهِ فَأَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن دُونِهِۦۚ بَلِ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ فِي ضَلَٰلٖ مُّبِينٖ ١١

This is the Creation of Allāh: so show Me what is there that others besides Him have created: nay, but the wrongdoers are in manifest deviation.

31:12

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَا لُقۡمَٰنَ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِلَّهِۚ وَمَن يَشۡكُرۡ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٞ ١٢

We bestowed Wisdom on Luqmān¹[saying to him]: “Be grateful to Allāh!” Anyone who is grateful [to Allāh] does so to the profit of his own self: but if any is ungrateful, verily, Allāh is Free-of-all-Want, Worthy-of-all-Praise.

31:13

وَإِذۡ قَالَ لُقۡمَٰنُ لِٱبۡنِهِۦ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُۥ يَٰبُنَيَّ لَا تُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرۡكَ لَظُلۡمٌ عَظِيمٞ ١٣

And [remember], when Luqmān said to his son admonishing him, “O My son! Associate not in worship [others] with Allāh: for polytheism¹is indeed a great wrongdoing.”

31:14

وَوَصَّيۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهۡنًا عَلَىٰ وَهۡنٖ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِي عَامَيۡنِ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيۡكَ إِلَيَّ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ ١٤

And We have enjoined on Man [to be kind] to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him. And in two years was his weaning: [hear the command], “Be grateful to Me and to your parents: [and] to Me is [your final] return.

31:15

وَإِن جَٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُشۡرِكَ بِي مَا لَيۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٞ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۖ وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَعۡرُوفٗاۖ وَٱتَّبِعۡ سَبِيلَ مَنۡ أَنَابَ إِلَيَّۚ ثُمَّ إِلَيَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ١٥

“But if they strive to force you to associate in worship with Me things of which you have no knowledge, obey them not; yet give them company in this life with kindness [and consideration], and follow the way of those who return to Me [in repentance]:¹In the End, the return of you all is to Me, and I will tell you all that you did.

31:16

يَٰبُنَيَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةٖ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلٖ فَتَكُن فِي صَخۡرَةٍ أَوۡ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ أَوۡ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَأۡتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٞ ١٦

“O My son!” [said Luqmān], “If there be [but] the weight of a mustard-seed and it were [hidden] in a rock, or [anywhere] in the heavens or on earth, Allāh will bring it forth: for Allāh is Most-Subtle, All-Knowing.

31:17

يَٰبُنَيَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱنۡهَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ١٧

“O My son! Establish [regular] prayer, enjoin what is good, and forbid what is abominable: And endure patiently whatever afflicts you; for such is firmness [of purpose] in [the conduct of] affairs.

31:18

وَلَا تُصَعِّرۡ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمۡشِ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَرَحًاۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخۡتَالٖ فَخُورٖ ١٨

“And turn not your cheek [in pride] at people, nor walk in arrogance through the earth: For Allāh loves not every arrogant boaster.

31:19

وَٱقۡصِدۡ فِي مَشۡيِكَ وَٱغۡضُضۡ مِن صَوۡتِكَۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ ٱلۡأَصۡوَٰتِ لَصَوۡتُ ٱلۡحَمِيرِ ١٩

“And be moderate in your pace, and lower your voice; for the foulest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the donkeys.”

31:20

أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَأَسۡبَغَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَٰهِرَةٗ وَبَاطِنَةٗۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَٰدِلُ فِي ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٖ وَلَا هُدٗى وَلَا كِتَٰبٖ مُّنِيرٖ ٢٠

See you not that Allāh has made subservient to you all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made His bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, [both] seen and unseen? Yet there are among people those who debate about Allāh, without knowledge and without guidance, and without an illuminating Book!

31:21

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُواْ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَآۚ أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ يَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ ٢١

When they are told to follow the [Revelation] that Allāh has sent down, they say: “Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers [following].” What! Even if it is the Shayṭān inviting them to the punishment of the [Blazing] Fire?

31:22

وَمَن يُسۡلِمۡ وَجۡهَهُۥٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنٞ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ٢٢

Whoever submits to Allāh, and is a doer of good, has grasped indeed the firmest hand-hold: And to Allāh shall all things return.

31:23

وَمَن كَفَرَ فَلَا يَحۡزُنكَ كُفۡرُهُۥٓۚ إِلَيۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ٢٣

But if any reject [Faith], let not his rejection grieve you: to Us is their return, and We shall tell them [the truth] of their deeds: for Allāh knows well all that is in [people’s] hearts.

31:24

نُمَتِّعُهُمۡ قَلِيلٗا ثُمَّ نَضۡطَرُّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٖ ٢٤

We grant them their pleasure for a while: In the end shall We drive them to a punishment most painful.

31:25

وَلَئِن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ٢٥

If you ask them: who it is that created the heavens and the earth. They will certainly say: “God!.” Say: “Praise be to Allāh!” But most of them know not.

31:26

لِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِيُّ ٱلۡحَمِيدُ ٢٦

To Allāh belong all things in heaven and on earth: Verily, Allāh is Free-of-all-Want,¹Worthy-of-All-Praise.

31:27

وَلَوۡ أَنَّمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقۡلَٰمٞ وَٱلۡبَحۡرُ يَمُدُّهُۥ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡحُرٖ مَّا نَفِدَتۡ كَلِمَٰتُ ٱللَّهِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞ ٢٧

And if all the trees on earth were pens and the Ocean [were ink], with seven oceans behind it to add to its [supply of ink], yet would not the Words of Allāh be exhausted [in writing]:¹Verily, Allāh is Mighty, Most-Wise.

31:28

مَّا خَلۡقُكُمۡ وَلَا بَعۡثُكُمۡ إِلَّا كَنَفۡسٖ وَٰحِدَةٍۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعُۢ بَصِيرٌ ٢٨

[For Allāh] to create and resurrect [all of you] is like [the creation and resurrection] of one life:¹For Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

31:29

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُولِجُ ٱلَّيۡلَ فِي ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِي ٱلَّيۡلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ كُلّٞ يَجۡرِيٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمّٗى وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ ٢٩

See you not that Allāh merges Night into Day and merges Day into Night; that He has made the Sun and the moon subservient [to His Law], each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allāh is All-Knowing of all that you do?

31:30

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلۡبَٰطِلُ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيُّ ٱلۡكَبِيرُ ٣٠

That is because Allāh is the Truth and because whatever else they invoke besides Him is Falsehood;¹and because Allāh is the Most-High, Most-Great.

31:31

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِي فِي ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ لِيُرِيَكُم مِّنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٖ شَكُورٖ ٣١

Do you not see that the ships sail through the seas by the Grace of Allāh? So that He may show you of His Signs? Verily, in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and are grateful.

31:32

وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوۡجٞ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُاْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ فَمِنۡهُم مُّقۡتَصِدٞۚ وَمَا يَجۡحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٖ كَفُورٖ ٣٢

When a wave covers them like the canopy [of clouds], they call upon Allāh, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He delivers them safely to land, there are among them the miserly [about acknowledging Allāh’s favours].¹And none disacknowledge Our Signs except all those who are perfidious, ungrateful!

31:33

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡاْ يَوۡمٗا لَّا يَجۡزِي وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِۦ وَلَا مَوۡلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔاۚ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ ٣٣

O People! Fear your Lord and fear [the coming of] a Day when no father can avail anything for his son, nor a son can avail anything for his father. Verily, the promise of Allāh is true: Let not then the present life deceive you, nor let the Deceiver¹misguide you about Allāh.

31:34

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡغَيۡثَ وَيَعۡلَمُ مَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسٞ مَّاذَا تَكۡسِبُ غَدٗاۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسُۢ بِأَيِّ أَرۡضٖ تَمُوتُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرُۢ ٣٤

Verily, the knowledge of The Hour¹is with Allāh [alone]. It is He who sends down rain, and He who knows what is in the wombs, nor does anyone know what it is that he will earn next day; nor does anyone know in what land is he going to die. Verily, Allāh is All-Knowing, Most-Acquainted [with all things].
