20:2
We have not sent down the Qur’ān to you to be [a means] of your misery,
20:3
but only as an admonition to those who fear [Allāh],
20:4
a revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens.
20:5
The Most-Gracious is established on the Throne.1
20:6
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on earth, and all between them, and all that is beneath the earth.
20:7
If you speak aloud [it is no matter]: for, verily, He [Allāh] knows what is secret and what is even more hidden.
20:8
Allāh! There is no god but He! To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.1
20:9
And did the story of Mūsā1reach you?
20:10
Behold, he saw a fire. So he said to his family: “Stay you [here]; I perceive a fire [at a distance]; perhaps I can bring you a piece [of fire] therefrom, or find some guidance at the [place of the] fire.”
20:11
But when he came to it [the fire], he was called: “O Mūsā!
20:12
“Verily, I am your Lord! Therefore, take off your shoes: you are in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā.1
20:13
“I have chosen you: So listen [carefully] to what is being revealed to you.
20:14
“Verily, I am the God: There is no god but I: So worship Me [alone], and establish [regular] Prayer for My remembrance.
20:15
“Verily, the Hour1is coming, I have almost kept it hidden — so that every soul is rewarded by the measure of its endeavour.
20:16
“Therefore, let not the one who disbelieves therein and follows his [own] whims, divert you therefrom, leading you to perish!
20:17
“And what is that in your right hand, O Mūsā?”
20:18
He said, “It is my rod: on it I lean; with it I beat down fodder for my flock1; and in it I find other uses.”
20:19
[Allāh] said, “Throw it, O Mūsā!”
20:20
He threw it, and behold! It was a snake, running.
20:21
[Allāh] said, “Seize it, and fear not: We shall return it to its former condition!
20:22
“[Now] draw your hand close to your side: It shall come out white [and shining] without stain, [and this is] another Sign,
20:23
“[This is] in order that We may show you of Our Greatest Signs.
20:24
“Go you to the Pharaoh,1for he has indeed transgressed [all limits].”
20:25
[Mūsā] said: “O My Lord! Dilate my bosom;1
20:26
“and ease my task for me;
20:27
“And remove the knot from my tongue,
20:28
“so that they may understand what I say:
20:29
“And give me a supporter from my family,
20:30
“Hārūn,1my brother;
20:31
“Strengthen me through him,
20:32
“And make him share my task:
20:33
“So that we may abundantly glorify You,
20:34
“And abundantly remember You:
20:35
“For You are All-Seeing us.”1
20:36
[Allāh] said: “Granted is your petition, O Mūsā!
20:37
“And, indeed, We conferred a favour on you a second time.1
20:38
“[Remember] when We inspired your mother the message:
20:39
“‘Throw him [the child] into the chest, and then throw [the chest] into the river. The river will cast him up on the bank, and he will be taken up by one who is an enemy to Me and an enemy to him’. And I endowed you with love from Me: And [this] in order that you may be reared under My eye.1
20:40
“[Remember] when your sister walked forth and said, ‘Shall I show you one who will nurse and rear the [child]?’ Thus We brought you back to your mother, so that her eye might be cooled and she should not grieve. Then you killed a man, but We saved you from grief, and We tried You in various ways. Then did you spend a number of years with the people of Madyan.1And [only] then did you come [here] as ordained,2O Mūsā!
20:41
“And I have chosen you for Myself.
20:42
“Go, you and your brother, with My Signs, and slacken not, either of you, in keeping Me in remembrance.
20:43
“Go, both of you, to the Pharaoh,1for he has indeed transgressed [all limits];
20:44
“And speak to him mildly, by chance he may take warning or fear [Allāh].”
20:45
They [Mūsā and Hārūn] said: “Our Lord! We fear lest he may hasten to punish us, or lest he violate [all bounds].”
20:46
He [Allāh] said: “Fear not the two of you: for I am with you: I hear and see [everything].
20:47
“So go you both to him [Pharaoh], and say, ‘Verily, we are Messengers sent by your Lord: Send forth, therefore, the Children of Isrā’īl with us, and punish them not. With a Sign, indeed, have we come from your Lord! And peace be on the one who follows guidance!
20:48
“‘Verily, it has been revealed to us that the punishment1[awaits] those who disbelieve [this Message] and turn away.’”
20:49
[When this message was delivered, the Pharaoh] said: “Who then, O Mūsā, is the Lord of the two of you?”
20:50
He [Mūsā] said: “Our Lord is He who gave to each [created] thing its form and then guided [it].”
20:51
[The Pharaoh] said: “What then is the condition of the previous generations?”
20:52
He [Mūsā] replied: “The knowledge of that is with my Lord, duly recorded in a Book: my Lord never errs, nor He forgets.
20:53
“He is the One who has made for you the earth as an expanse [cradle]; has paved for you ways [and channels] in it; and has sent down water from the sky.” With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants.
20:54
Eat [for yourselves] and pasture your cattle. Verily, in this are Signs for men endowed with understanding.
20:55
From the [earth] did We create you, and into it shall We return you,1and from it shall We bring you out once again.
20:56
And We showed him [the Pharaoh] all Our Signs, but he disbelieved and refrained.
20:57
He said: “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Mūsā?
20:58
“So, we will surely produce magic similar to yours! Hence, make a tryst between us and yourself, which we shall not fail to keep, neither we nor you, in a place where both shall have equitable chance.”
20:59
He [Mūsā] said: “Your tryst is the Day of the Festival, and let the people be assembled after sunrise.”
20:60
So the Pharaoh retreated. He concerted his plan, and then came [back].
20:61
Mūsā said to them [magicians]: “Woe to you! Forge you not a lie against Allāh, lest He annihilate you [at once] by punishment. The forger surely suffers failure.”
20:62
So they disputed, one with another, over their affair, and they held secret parleys.
20:63
They said: “These two are certainly [expert] magicians. Their object is to drive you out from your land with their magic, and to do away with your ideal way.
20:64
“Therefore, concert your plan, and then assemble in a single rank. He succeeds today who gains the upper hand.”
20:65
They said: “O Mūsā! Will you throw [first] or should we be the first to throw?”
20:66
He said, “Nay, throw you first!” Then, behold, their ropes and their sticks, so it seemed to him on account of their magic, are running [around]!
20:67
So Mūsā felt fearful in his mind.
20:68
We said [O Mūsā]: “Fear not! For you have indeed the upper hand,
20:69
“and throw that which is in your right hand. It will swallow up that which they have faked. What they have faked is but a magician’s trick, and the magician succeeds not in his endeavour.”
20:70
So the magicians threw [themselves] down in prostration. They said, “We believe in the Lord of Hārūn and Mūsā.”
20:71
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Did you believe in Him before I give you permission? Surely this must be your leader who has taught you magic! Be sure I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will have you crucified on trunks of palm-trees. So shall you know for certain, which of us can give the more severe and the more lasting punishment!”
20:72
They said: “Never shall we prefer you to what has come to us of the Clear Signs and of Him who created us! So decree whatever you desire to decree: for you can only decree [in matters related to] the life in this world.
20:73
“For us, we have believed in our Lord: May He forgive us our sins and the magic to which you did compel us: For Allāh is Best and Most-Enduring.”1
20:74
Verily, he who comes to his Lord as a sinner, for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live.
20:75
But he who comes to Him [Allāh] as a believer, who has worked righteous deeds — for such are ranks exalted,
20:76
[For them are] Gardens of Eternity, beneath which flow rivers: They will dwell therein forever: such is the reward of those who purify themselves [from evil].
20:77
We revealed to Mūsā: “Travel by night with My servants,1and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken [by the Pharaoh] and without any [other] fear.”
20:78
So the Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the sea completely overwhelmed them and covered them up.
20:79
The Pharaoh led his people astray; he did not lead them aright.
20:80
“O You Children of Isrā’īl! We delivered you from your enemy, and We [mutually] appointed a time and place [to meet you] on the right side of the Ṭūr [Mountain],1and We sent down to you manna and quails:2
20:81
“Eat of the wholesome things We have provided for your sustenance, and commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should descend on you: and on whoever descends My Wrath does fall down indeed!
20:82
“Verily, I am the One who ever forgives those who repent, believe, and do right, who are on [true] guidance.”
20:83
[When Mūsā was up on the Mount, Allāh said:] “What made you hasten in advance of your people, O Mūsā?”
20:84
He replied: “They are close on my footsteps: I hastened to You, O My Lord, so that You may be pleased [with me].”
20:85
[Allāh] said: “We have tested your people in your absence: The Sāmirī1has led them astray.”
20:86
So Mūsā returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: “O My people! Did not your Lord make a good promise to you? Did you then feel my absence was too long?1Or did you desire that the Wrath of your Lord should descend on you, and so you broke your pledge to me?”
20:87
They said: “We broke not the pledge to you, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the people, so we threw them [into the fire], and so did the Sāmirī.1
20:88
“Then he brought out [of the fire] before the [people] the body of a calf1which bellowed. So they said: This is your god, and the god of Mūsā, but he [Mūsā] has forgotten!”
20:89
Could they not see that it [the calf] could not return them a word [for answer], and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?
20:90
Before this, Hārūn had [already] said to them: “O My people! You are being tested in this. Verily, your Lord is [Allāh] the Most-Gracious: So follow me and obey my command.”
20:91
They had said: “We will continue to devote ourselves to it until Mūsā returns to us.”
20:92
[Mūsā] said: “O Hārūn! What kept you back when you saw them going astray,
20:93
“from following me? Did you then disobey my order?”
20:94
[Hārūn] replied: “O Son of my mother! Seize [me] not by my beard nor by [the hair of] my head! Truly, I feared lest you should say: ‘You have caused a division among the Children of Isrā’īl, and you did not observe my word!’”
20:95
[Mūsā] said: “What then is your case, O Sāmirī?”
20:96
He replied: “I saw what they failed to see: so I took a handful [of dust] from the footprint of the Messenger,1and threw it [into the calf]: Thus did my soul embellished [commanded] to me.”
20:97
[Mūsā] said: “Get you gone! But your [punishment] in this life will be that you will say, ‘Touch me not;’ and, moreover [for a future penalty] you have a promise that you will not be failed. Now look at your god, of whom you have become a devotee: We will certainly burn it in a blazing Fire and then utterly scatter it over the sea!”
20:98
Verily, your God is Allāh: there is no god but He. His knowledge embraces all things.
20:99
Thus do We relate to you [O Prophet] some stories of what happened earlier: for We have sent you a reminder from Us.
20:100
Whoever turns away from it, verily, he will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection;
20:101
They will abide in that [state] forever, and grievous will be their burden on the Day of Resurrection,
20:102
the Day the Trumpet will be blown: that Day, We shall gather the sinners,1blue-eyed2[with terror].
20:103
In whispers will they tell each other: “You spent not longer than ten [days];
20:104
We know best what they say, when the best of them in judgement would say: “You spent only one day!”
20:105
They ask you about the mountains: say, “My Lord will utterly scatter them [as dust, on the Day of Resurrection];
20:106
“He will leave them as plains, smooth and level;
20:107
“Nothing crooked or uneven will you see in them.”
20:108
On that Day, they will follow the caller [straight]: no crookedness in him: and all voices will be hushed [in the presence of] the Most-Gracious, so that you will hear nothing but whispers.
20:109
On that Day, shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by the Most-Gracious and whose word He approves.
20:110
He knows what is before them or behind them: but they comprehend Him not.
20:111
[All] faces [of the arrogant] shall be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting.1Failed indeed will be one who carries [the burden of] wrongdoing [on his back]2.
20:112
[But] he who works deeds of righteousness, and has faith [in Allāh], will have no fear of wrong [being done to him] nor of any curtailment [of what is his due].
20:113
Thus have We sent this down as an Arabic Qur’ān, and explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order that they may fear [Allāh], or that it may cause them to remember [Him].
20:114
Exalted above all is Allāh, The King [of the Kings],1The Truth!2[O Prophet] be not in haste with the Qur’ān3before its revelation to you is completed, but say, “O My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”
20:115
Earlier, We had taken the covenant of Ādam,1but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve.2
20:116
And [remember] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves before Ādam.” They [all] prostrated, but not Iblīs:1he declined.
20:117
So We said: “O Ādam! Verily, this [Shayṭān] is an enemy to you and your wife: Let him not throw you both out of Paradise, so that you face misery.
20:118
“Therein [Paradise] is [enough provision] for you not to go hungry, nor to go naked,
20:119
“Nor will you suffer from thirst, nor will you be smitten by Sun’s heat.”
20:120
But the Shayṭān whispered to him. He said, “O Ādam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that never decays?”
20:121
So, they both [Ādam and his wife] ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise [trees] on their bodies. So Ādam disobeyed his Lord and fell into deviation.
20:122
Thereafter, his Lord chose him [for His Grace], turned to him [forgave him], and guided [him].1
20:123
He said: “Get you down, both of you, all together, from it [Paradise], with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor will he fall into misery.
20:124
“But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him will be a life miserable, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”
20:125
He will say: “O My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight [before]?”
20:126
[Allāh] will say: “Thus did you, when Our Signs came to you, forgot them: so will you, this day, be forgotten.”
20:127
And thus do We punish one who transgresses beyond bounds and who believes not in the Sings of his Lord: and the Punishment of the Hereafter is greater hardship, more enduring.
20:128
Is it not a guidance to such [people to call to mind] how many generations before them did We destroy, in whose dwellings they [now] move?1Verily, in this are Signs for people endowed with understanding.
20:129
Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord, [their punishment] must necessarily have come [by now]; [but] there is a term appointed [for respite].
20:130
Therefore, endure patiently what they say, and [constantly] proclaim the praises of your Lord before the rising of the Sun, and before its setting; and glorify [Allāh] for a part of the [late] hours of the night, and at the sides of the day:1that you may be pleased.
20:131
Strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment, to some of them, splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: But the sustenance of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
Enjoin your family to pray, and be constant therein. We ask you not to provide sustenance: We provide it for you. But the best end [in the Hereafter] is for those who fear [Allāh].
20:133
They say: “Why does he [the Prophet] not bring us a Sign from his Lord?” Has not a Clear Sign come to them [in the shape of] the earlier Scriptures of revelation?
20:134
Had We destroyed them with a punishment before this, they would have said: “Our Lord! If only you had sent us a Messenger, we should certainly have followed Your Signs before we were humbled and put to shame.”
20:135
Say: “Each one [of us] is waiting [in expectation]: wait you, therefore, and soon shall you know who are the people of the Straight Path, and who it is that has received guidance.”
