Juz 20
25. The Criterion
25:21
Those who do not hope to meet Us [for Judgement] say: “Why are not the angels sent down to us, or [why] do we not see our Lord?” Indeed, they have an arrogant conceit of themselves, and mighty is their disdain for disobedience!
25:22
The Day they will see the angels, no good tidings will there be to the sinners that Day. The [angels] will say: “[Good tidings] is rigorously denied [to you]!”
25:23
And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did [in this life], and We shall make such deeds as floating dust scattered about.
25:24
The people of Paradise will be well, that Day, in their abode, and will have the fairest resting place.
25:25
That Day the heaven shall be rent asunder with clouds, and angels shall be sent down, descending [in ranks],
25:26
That Day, the Sovereignty as of right shall be [wholly] for the Most-Gracious: and it will be a Day of difficulty for the Rejecters [of Truth].
25:27
That Day the wrongdoer will bite at his hands, and will say, “Oh! Would that I had followed a [straight] path with the Messenger!
25:28
“Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had not taken such a one for a close friend!
25:29
“He did lead me away from the Message [of Allāh] after it had come to me! Ah! The Shayṭān is but a forsaker to Man!”
25:30
The Messenger will say [that Day]: “O My Lord! Truly my people deserted this Qur’ān.”
25:31
Thus have We made for every Prophet an enemy among the sinners:but enough is your Lord as a Guide and Helper.
25:32
Those who reject [the Message] say: “Why is not the Qur’ān revealed to him all at once? Thus [is it revealed] so that We may strengthen [O Prophet] your heart thereby, and We have rehearsed it to you [slowly] in stages.
25:33
And no issue do they bring to you but We reveal to you the Truth and the best explanation [thereof].
25:34
Those who will be driven to Hell walking on their faces. They will be in an evil place, and on a path most astray.
25:35
[Before this,] We gave Mūsāthe Scripture, and appointed his brother Hārūnwith him as [his] supporter;
25:36
and We commanded [them, saying:] “Go you both to the people who have disbelieved Our Signs.” So We visited them [the Rejecters] with utter destruction.
25:37
And [remember] the people of Nūḥ,when they disacknowledged the Messengers, We drowned them, and We made them as a Sign for Mankind; and We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
25:38
As also [remember] the ‘Ādand the Thamūd,and the people of the Well, and many a generation between them.
25:39
We made each [of these who disbelieved in their Messengers] as examples, and each of them We smashed to utter destruction [for their sins].
25:40
And the [Rejecters] indeed have passed by the town on which was rained a shower of evil: did they not then see it [with their own eyes]? But they expected not to be raised again.
25:41
When they see you, they treat you no otherwise than in mockery [saying]: “Is this the one whom Allāh has sent as a Messenger?
25:42
“He almost misled us indeed from our gods, had it not been that we patiently endured with them!” Soon will they know when they see the Punishment: who it is that is most misled in Path!
25:43
See you such a one as takes for his god his whims? Would you [then] be a guardian for him?
25:44
Or think you that most of them listen or understand? They are but like cattle; nay, they are farther astray from the Path.
25:45
Have you not seen how your Lord does stretch the shadow! If He willed, He could have made it stationary! Then We made the Sun its guide;
25:46
Then We drew it in towards Ourselves, a contraction by easy stages.
25:47
And He it is who made the Night as a robe for you and Sleep as time for rest, and made the Day as a time for going out [to work].
25:48
And He it is who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, preceding His Mercy. And We send down purifying water from the sky,
25:49
that with it We give life to a dead land, and irrigate it and We give it to drink to the cattle and people We have created in great numbers.
25:50
And We have distributed the [water] amongst them, in order that they may be mindful but most people are adamant to be ungrateful.
25:51
Had it been Our Will, We could have sent a warner to every town.
25:52
Therefore, [O Prophet] obey not the Rejecters, but strive with it [the Qur’ān] against them with utmost strenuousness.
25:53
It is He who has mixed the two bodies of flowing water:one palatable and sweet, and the other salty and bitter; and He has made a barrier between them, a partition that is not to be passed.
25:54
It is He who has created Man from water:then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for your Lord is All-Powerful.
25:55
Yet do they worship, besides Allāh, things that can neither profit them nor harm them: and the Rejecter [of Faith] is a helper [of Evil] against his [own] Lord!
25:56
We sent you [O Prophet] only as a proclaimer of glad tidings and as a warner.
25:57
Say: “No remuneration do I ask of you for it [for conveying the Message] but this: Let whoever wishes, take a [straight] Path to his Lord:”
25:58
And put you trust in the Ever-Living who dies not; and celebrate His praise. And enough is He to minutely know the sins of His servants;
25:59
He who created the heavens and the earth and all that is in-between, in six days. Then He established Himself on the Throne:[He is Allāh] the Most-Gracious. Ask you, then, about Him of any acquainted [with such things].
25:60
When it is said to them [Rejecters], “Worship you the Most-Gracious!;” they say, “And what is [Allāh] the Most-Gracious? Shall we worship that which you command us?” And it increased them in aversion.
25:61
Exalted is He who made Constellations in the skies, and placed therein a Lamp [Sun] and a Moon giving light;
25:62
And it is He who made the Night and the Day follow each other: for such as desire to be mindful or to show their gratitude [to Allāh].
25:63
And the servants of [Allāh] the Most-Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace [on you]!;”
25:64
those who spend nights prostrating and standing to their Lord.
25:65
Those who say, “Our Lord! Avert from us the Punishment of Hell, for its punishment is indeed an affliction grievous,
25:66
“Evil indeed is it as an abode, and as a place to stay.”
25:67
[The servants of Allāh are] those who, when they spend, are not extravagant nor miserly, but hold a just [balance] between these [extremes];
25:68
they are the ones who invoke not, with Allāh, any other god, nor slay such life as Allāh has made sacred except justly, nor commit adultery. And any who does this [not only will] meet [his] punishment,
25:69
[but] the punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be doubled for him, and he will dwell therein forever in ignominy,
25:70
except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds [in this life], for Allāh will change their sins into good [rewards], and Allāh is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful,
25:71
and whoever repents and does good [deeds] has truly turned to Allāh in repentance;
25:72
those who give not false witness, and, if they pass by futility, they pass by it with honourable [avoidance];
25:73
those who, when they are reminded of the Signs of their Lord, stoop not downat them as if they were deaf or blind;
25:74
and those who pray, “Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us [the grace] to lead the [God‐]fearing!”
25:75
Those are the ones who will be rewarded with the highest place[in Paradise], because of their enduring patiently: Therein shall they be met with salutation and greeting,
25:76
dwelling therein forever — how beautiful an abode and a place of stay!
25:77
[O Prophet] say [to the Rejecters]: “My Lord does not concern Himself with you but for your prayer to Him: You have indeed disbelieved [His Message], and soon will come the inevitable [punishment]!”
26. The Poets
Bismillah
26:1
Ṭā. Sīn. Mīm.
26:2
These are the verses of the Illuminating Book.
26:3
It seems that you [O Prophet] will kill yourself [with grief], that they do not become Believers.
26:4
If [such] were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks [forever] in humility.
26:5
But there comes not to them any newly-revealed Message from the Most-Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
26:6
They have indeed disbelieved [the Message]: so they will know soon [enough] the truth of what they mocked!
26:7
Do they not look at the earth — how many noble pairsof all kinds We have produced therein?
26:8
Verily, in this, there is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
26:9
And verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:10
And [remember] when your Lord called Mūsā[telling him:] “Go to the people given to wrongdoing,
26:11
“the people of the Pharaoh[and tell them:] ‘Will they not fear [Allāh]?’”
26:12
He said: “O My Lord! I do fear that they will disbelieve me,”
26:13
“My breast is straitened, and my tongue does not speak [plainly]: so send unto Hārūn.”
26:14
“And [further], they have a charge of crime against me;so I fear that they may kill me.”
26:15
Allāh said: “By no means! Proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen [to your call].
26:16
“So go forth, both of you, to the Pharaoh, and say: ‘We [I am] the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds,
26:17
[with the Message] “that you send with us the Children of Isrā’īl.’”
26:18
[The Pharaoh] said: “Did we not foster you as a child among us, and did you not stay in our midst many years of your life?
26:19
“And you did a deed of yours which [you know] you did, and you are an ungrateful!”
26:20
Mūsā said: “I did it then when I was one of the misguided.
26:21
“So I fled from you [all] when I feared you. Then my Lord invested me with wisdom and appointed me as one of the Messengers.
26:22
“And this is the favour with which you do reproach me, that you have enslaved the Children of Isrā’īl!”
26:23
Pharaoh said: “And what is the Lord of the Worlds?”
26:24
He [Mūsā] said: “[He is] the Lord the heavens and the earth, and all between them, if you had but sure belief.”
26:25
He [the Pharaoh] said to those around him: “Did you not listen [to what he says]?”
26:26
[Mūsā] said: “[He is] your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!”
26:27
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Truly your Messenger, who has been sent to you, is a [man] bewitched!”
26:28
He [Mūsā] said: “[He is the] Lord of the East and the West, and all between them! If only you had understanding!”
26:29
He [the Pharaoh] said: “If you take any god other than me, I will certainly throw you into prison!”
26:30
He [Mūsā] said: “Even if I showed you something clear [and convincing]?”
26:31
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Show it then, if you are truthful!”
26:32
So [Mūsā] threw his rod, and behold, it became a serpent, plain [for all to see]!
26:33
And he [Mūsā] drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the beholders!
26:34
He [the Pharaoh] said to the chiefs around him: “This is indeed a magician well-versed:
26:35
“He wants to expel you from your land using his magic. So what is it you counsel?”
26:36
They said: “Keep him and his brother in suspense [for a while], and dispatch to the towns heralds to collect.
26:37
“They will bring up to you all magicians, well-versed.”
26:38
So the magicians were assembled for a day appointed,
26:39
And the people were told: “Are you [getting] assembled?,
26:40
“that we may follow the magicians if they win?”
26:41
So when the magicians arrived, they said to the Pharaoh: “Shall we have a [suitable] reward if we overcome?”
26:42
He said: “Yes, [and more], for you shall in that case be among the people close [to me].”
26:43
Mūsā said to them: “Throw you that which you are to throw!”
26:44
So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: “By the might of the Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly overcome!”
26:45
Then Mūsā threw his rod, and it straightway swallowed up all the falsehoods which they faked!
26:46
So the magicians fell down, prostrate,
26:47
saying: “We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
26:48
“the Lord of Mūsā and Hārūn.”
26:49
He [the Pharaoh] said, “Believe you in Him before I give you permission? Surely he is your leader who has taught you magic! But soon shall you know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.”
26:50
They said: “No matter! We shall [only] return to our Lord!”
26:51
“Our only desire is that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first to believe.”
26:52
And We revealed to Mūsā: “Travel by night with my servants;for surely you shall be pursued.”
26:53
So the Pharaoh sent collectors to the towns,
26:54
[saying]: “These [Isrā’īlites] are but a small [evil] band,
26:55
“And they have surely enraged us,”
26:56
“and we all are amply vigilant.”
26:57
So We expelled them from orchards and springs,
26:58
and treasures and [every kind of] honourable position;
26:59
Thus it was; and We made the Children of Isrā’īl inheritors of such things.
26:60
So they pursued them at sunrise.
26:61
And when the two groups saw each other, the people of Mūsā said: “We are sure to be overtaken.”
26:62
[Mūsā] said: “Never! My Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!”
26:63
So We revealed to Mūsā: “Strike the sea with you rod!” So it got divided, and each separate part became like a huge mountain.
26:64
And We made the other [party] approach thither.
26:65
And We delivered Mūsā and all who were with him;
26:66
Then We drowned the others.
26:67
Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
26:68
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:69
And rehearse to them the story of Ibrāhīm.
26:70
[Remember] when he said to his father and his people: “What worship you?”
26:71
They said: “We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them.”
26:72
He said: “Do they hear you when you call [them]?
26:73
“Or do you good or harm?”
26:74
They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus.”
26:75
He said: “Do you then think over what you have been worshipping,
26:76
“you and your ancient fathers?
26:77
“For, they are enemies to me, except the Sustainer of the Worlds,
26:78
“who created me and, therefore, He will [surely] guide me,
26:79
“who gives me food and drink,
26:80
“and when I fall ill, it is He who cures me,
26:81
“who causes me to die, and then will raise me [again],
26:82
“and who, I hope, will forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgement.
26:83
“O My Lord! Bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous,
26:84
“and grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the later [generations],
26:85
“and make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Bliss,
26:86
“and forgive my father, for he is among the misguided,
26:87
“and let me not be disgraced on the Day when [people] will be raised up,
26:88
“the Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,
26:89
“except one who brings to Allāh a blame-free [pure] heart.”
26:90
[On the Day of Judgement] Paradise will be brought close to the [God‐]fearing,
26:91
and to those straying [in evil], the Fire [Hell] will be placed in full view;
26:92
and it shall be said to them: “Where are those [gods] you worshipped
26:93
besides Allāh? Can they help you [now] or help themselves?”
26:94
So they will be thrown headlong into it [Fire] — they and those straying [in evil],
26:95
and the whole army of Iblīs [the Shayṭān] together.
26:96
They will say therein amid their [mutual] bickering:
26:97
“By Allāh, we were truly in deviation manifest,
26:98
“When we held you [false gods] as equals with the Lord of the Worlds;
26:99
“and none misguided us but those who were given to sin;
26:100
“Now, we have no intercessors [for us],
26:101
“Nor [even] a single intimate friend,
26:102
“If only we had a chance of return, so we would truly be of those who believe!”
26:103
Verily, in this is a Sign but most of them did not believe.
26:104
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:105
The people of Nūḥ disbelieved the Messengers.
26:106
[Remember] when their brother Nūḥ said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:107
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger,
26:108
“so fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:109
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord-of-the-Worlds:
26:110
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.”
26:111
They said: “Shall we believe in you when it is the lowest [of people] that follow you?”
26:112
He said: “And what do I know as to what they used to do?
26:113
“Their account is only with my Lord, if you could only perceive.
26:114
“I am not one to drive away those who believe.
26:115
“I am only a manifest warner.”
26:116
They said: “If you desist not, O Nūḥ, you shall be stoned [to death].
26:117
He said: “O My Lord! Truly my people have disbelieved me.
26:118
“So judge you, then, between me and them clearly, and save me and the Believers who are with me.”
26:119
So We saved him and those with him, in the Ark filled [with all creatures].
26:120
Thereafter, We drowned those who remained behind.
26:121
Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:122
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:123
The ‘Ād[people] disbelieved the Messengers.
26:124
[Remember] when their brother Hūdsaid to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:125
“I am to you a Messenger worthy of trust:
26:126
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:127
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:128
“Do you uselessly build a landmark on every high place?
26:129
“And you secure for yourselves [skillful] edifices in the hope of achieving eternity?
26:130
“And when you punish, you punish like tyrants.
26:131
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:132
“And fear Him who has bestowed on you all that you know.
26:133
“He has bestowed on you cattle and sons,
26:134
“and orchards and springs.
26:135
“Truly, I fear for you the punishment of a Great Day.”
26:136
They said: “It is the same to us whether you preach to us or be not among [our] preachers!
26:137
“This is no other than the customary character of the ancients,
26:138
“And we are not going to be punished.”
26:139
So they disbelieved him; [as a result] We destroyed them. Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:140
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:141
The Thamūd[people] disbelieved the Messengers.
26:142
[Remember] when their brother Ṣāliḥsaid to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:143
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:144
“So fear Allāh, and obey me.
26:145
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: verily, my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:146
“Will you be left secure, in [the enjoyment of] all that you have here?
26:147
“In orchards and springs,
26:148
“and in crops and date-palms with spathes of ripe fruit?
26:149
“And you carve houses out of mountains with skill.
26:150
“So fear Allāh and obey me;
26:151
“And obey not the bidding of those who exceeded the [just] limits,
26:152
“who make mischief in the land, and make no reform.”
26:153
They said: “You are only one of the bewitched!
26:154
“You are no more than a human like us: so bring us a Sign,if you tell the truth!”
26:155
He said: “Here is [the Sign]: a she-camel.She has a right of watering, and you have a right of watering on a day, appointed [for both].
26:156
“Touch her [she-camel] not with harm, lest the punishment of a Great Day seize you.”
26:157
But they slaughtered her: thereafter they became full of regrets.
26:158
So the punishment seized them. Verily, in that is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:159
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:160
The people of Lūṭdisbelieved the Messengers.
26:161
[Remember] when their brother Lūṭ said to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:162
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:163
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:164
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:165
“Of all the creatures in the world, do you approach males?
26:166
“and you shun those whom Allāh has created for you to be your mates? Nay, you are a people transgressing [all limits]!”
26:167
They said: “If you desist not, O Lūt! You will assuredly be expelled!”
26:168
He said: “I do [utterly] detest your deeds.
26:169
“O My Lord! Deliver me and my family from such things as they do!”
26:170
So We delivered him and all his family,
26:171
except an old woman who was among those who perished.
26:172
Then the rest We destroyed utterly.
26:173
We rained down on them a shower [of stones]: and evil was the shower on those who were warned [but heeded not]!
26:174
Verily, in this is a Sign: But most of them did not believe.
26:175
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:176
The People of the Wooddisbelieved the Messengers.
26:177
[Remember] when Shu‘aybsaid to them: “Will you not fear [Allāh]?
26:178
“I am to you a trustworthy Messenger.
26:179
“So fear Allāh and obey me.
26:180
“No remuneration do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
26:181
“Give just measure, and cause no loss [to others by fraud].
26:182
“And weigh with scales, upright.
26:183
“And cheat not people out of things due to them, nor do evil in the land, making mischief.
26:184
“And fear Him who created you and [who created] the generations before [you].”
26:185
They said: “You are only one of those utterly bewitched!
26:186
“You are but a human like us, and indeed we think you are one of the liars!
26:187
“So cause pieces of the sky to fall on us, if you are one of the truthful!”
26:188
He said: “My Lord knows best what you do.”
26:189
So they disbelieved him. So, the punishment of the day of overshadowing cloudsseized them, and that was the punishment of a Great Day.
26:190
Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them did not believe.
26:191
And, verily, your Lord is He, the Mighty, the Most-Merciful.
26:192
Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:
26:193
With it came down the Faithful Spirit
26:194
to your heart so that you may be one of the warners,
26:195
in a clear Arabic tongue.
26:196
Without doubt it is [announced] in the [revealed] Scriptures of the ancient peoples.
26:197
Is it not an [enough] Sign for them that the scholars of the Children of Isrā’īl knew it [as true]?
26:198
Had We revealed it to some of the non-Arabs,
26:199
and had he recited it to them [Arabs], they would not have believed in it.
26:200
Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners,
26:201
they will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment,
26:202
which will visit them all of a sudden, while they perceive it not;
26:203
Then they will say: “Shall we be respited?”
26:204
Do they [still] ask for Our punishment to be hastened on?
26:205
See you: if We do let them enjoy [this life] for a few [more] years,
26:206
[and] then there comes to them at length the [punishment] which they were promised!
26:207
It will profit them not the enjoyment they were given.
26:208
Never did We destroy a town but [only] after it had its warners,
26:209
by way of a reminder; and We never are wrongdoers.
26:210
The satans did not bring it down:
26:211
It is not proper for them, nor is it in their power.
26:212
Indeed they [satans] are banished from hearing it.
26:213
So call not on any other god alongwith Allāh, because [if you do] you will be among those who will be punished.
26:214
And warn your nearest relatives,
26:215
and lower your wingto the Believers who follow you.
26:216
But if they disobey you, say: “I am freefrom what you do!”
26:217
And put your trust in the Mighty, the Most-Merciful,
26:218
who sees you when you stand forth [in prayer],
26:219
and your movements among those who prostrate themselves,
26:220
for He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
26:221
Shall I inform you [O People!], on whom it is that the satans descend?
26:222
They descend on every liar, sinner.
26:223
They listen eagerly, and most of them are liars.
26:224
And the poets,it is those straying [in evil], who follow them:
26:225
See you not that they [poets] wander distracted in every valley?
26:226
And that they say what they practice not?
26:227
except those who believe, work righteousness, engage in the remembrance of Allāh, and defend themselves after they were wronged. And soon will the wrongdoers know what vicissitude will overtake them!
27. The Ants
Bismillah
27:1
Ṭā. Sīn.These are the verses of the Qur’ān, a Book that makes [things] clear;
27:2
a guidance and good tidings for the believers,
27:3
those who establish [regular] Prayers and pay Zakāt, and have firm faith in the Hereafter.
27:4
As to those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fascinating [in their eyes]; and so they waver blindly.
27:5
Such are those for whom grievous punishment is [waiting]; and in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers.
27:6
As for you, surely you receive the Qur’ān from the Most-Wise, All-Knowing.
27:7
[Remember] when Mūsāsaid to his family: “I perceive a fire; soon will I bring you from there some information, or I will bring you a piece of burning fire that you may warm yourselves.
27:8
But when he [Mūsā] approached it [the Fire], [a voice] called out: “Blessed is the one who is in the Fire and those around it:and Glory to Allāh, the Lord of the Worlds.
27:9
“O Mūsā! Verily, it is Me, Allāh, the Mighty, the Most-Wise!
27:10
“[Now] throw your rod!” But when he saw it moving [of its own accord] as if it had been a [small] snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps. “O Mūsā!” [Allāh said], “Fear not! Truly, in My presence, [My] Messengers have no fear,
27:11
“except those who do wrong and thereafter substituted good for evil; truly, I am Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
27:12
“And put your hand into your neck-opening, and it will come out white without stain [or blemish]: [these are] among the nine Signs[you will take] to the Pharaohand his people: for they are a people in transgression.”
27:13
But when Our Signs came to them, visibly, they said: “This is sorcery manifest!”
27:14
And they disacknowledged them [the Signs] wrongfully and out of arrogance, though their souls acknowledged them. So see what was the fate of the mischief-makers!
27:15
And We gave knowledge to Dā’ūdand Sulaymān:and they both said: “All Praise to Allāh who has distinguished us over many of His servantswho believe!”
27:16
And Sulaymān succeeded Dā’ūd. He said: “O People! We have been taught the speech of birds, and we have been given of everything. This is indeed grace manifest [from Allāh.]”
27:17
And before Sulaymān were marshalled his armies, of Jinnsand humans and birds, and they were all kept in orderly ranks.
27:18
At length, when they came to the valley of ants, an ant said: “O Ants, get into your habitations, lest Sulaymān and his soldiers trample you while they know not.”
27:19
So he [Sulaymān] smiled, amused at her speech; and said: “O My Lord! Dispose me to thank Your favour which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may work righteousness that will please You. And admit me, by Your Grace, to the ranks of Your righteous servants.”
27:20
And he inspected the birds, and said: “Why is it that I see not the hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?
27:21
“I will certainly inflict on him a severe punishment or kill him unless he brings me a clear reason [for absence].”
27:22
But it [the hoopoe] did not remain absent for long: it [came up and] said: “I have attained knowledge which you have not attained, and I have come to you from Saba’with tidings certain.
27:23
“I found [there] a woman ruling over them and she is provided with everything; and she has a magnificent throne.
27:24
“I found her and her people worshipping the Sun instead of Allāh, and the Shayṭān has made their deeds seem fascinating [in their eyes], and has kept them away from the Path [of Allāh], so they are not guided,
27:25
“that they worship not Allāh who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you hide and what you reveal.
27:26
“Allāh! There is no god but He! He is the Lord-of-the-Throne-Supreme!”
27:27
[Sulaymān] said: “Soon shall we see whether you have told the truth or are one of the liars!
27:28
“Go you with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them and [wait to] see what [answer] they return.”
27:29
[The Queen] said: “O Chiefs! Here is an honourable letter delivered to me.
27:30
“It is from Sulaymān, and is [as follows]: ‘In the name of Allāh, the Most-Gracious, the Most-Merciful:
27:31
“‘Be you not arrogant to me, and come to me in submission [to the true Religion].’”
27:32
She said: “O Chiefs! Advise me in [this] affair of mine: no affair do I decide except in your presence [and advice].”
27:33
They said: “We are endowed with strength and possess strong [martial] power. The command is with you; so consider what you command.”
27:34
She said: “Kings, when they enter a town, despoil it, and make the noblest of its people its meanest. Thus do they behave.
27:35
“I am going to send them a present, and [will wait] to see what [answer my] envoys bring back.”
27:36
When [the Queen’s envoys] came to Sulaymān, he said: “Will you give me wealth? But that which Allāh has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay, it is you who rejoice in your gift!
27:37
“Go back to them, and be sure we shall come to them with such armies as they will never be able to resist: We shall expel them from there in disgrace, humbled.”
27:38
He said [to his people]: “O Chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?”
27:39
A giant Jinnsaid: “I will bring it to you before you rise from your council: indeed, I have full strength [for the purpose], and worthy of trust.”
27:40
Said one who had the knowledge of the Scripture:“I will bring it to you before even your glance returns to you. Then when he [Sulaymān] saw it placed firmly before him, he said: “This is by the grace of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful? And if anyone is grateful, truly his gratitude is [a gain] for his own soul; but if anyone is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free-of-All-Want, Most-Generous!”
27:41
He said: “Disguise her throne! Let us see whether she is guided [to the truth] or is one of those who are not guided!”
27:42
So when she arrived, she was asked, “Is this the like of your throne?” She said, “As if this is it.” [Sulaymān said:] “Knowledge was bestowed on us before her, and we had submitted [to Allāh].
27:43
“And she was prevented [from worshipping Allāh] because she belonged to a people of Rejecters [of Allāh].”
27:44
She was asked to enter the palace [of Sulaymān]. When she saw it, she thought it was a body of [deep] water, and she [tucked up her skirts], uncovering her legs. He [Sulaymān] said: “This is but a palace paved [and tall] with [slabs of] glass.” She said: “O My Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do [now] submit, with Sulaymān, to Allāh, the Lord-of-the-Worlds.”
27:45
We sent [aforetime], to the Thamūd,their brother Ṣāliḥ,saying, “Worship Allāh:” but, behold, they became two factions quarrelling with each other.
27:46
He said: “O My people! Why you hasten to evil before good? If only you ask Allāh for forgiveness, you may, by chance, receive mercy.
27:47
They said: “Ill omen do we augur from you and those that are with you.” He said: “Your ill omen is with Allāh; yes, you are a people under trial.”
27:48
There were in the town nine persons, who made mischief in the land, and did no reform.
27:49
They said: “Swear a mutual oath by Allāh that we shall make a secret night [attack] on him [Ṣāliḥ] and his people, and that we shall then say to his heir [when he seeks revenge]: ‘We were not present at the murder of his people, and we are truly telling the truth.’”
27:50
They plotted, but We too planned, while they perceived it not.
27:51
So see what was the fate of their plot! We utterly destroyed all of them and their people.
27:52
So, look, there are their houses, lying in utter ruin, because they did wrong. Verily, in this is a Sign for people of knowledge.
27:53
And We saved those who believed and feared [Allāh].
27:54
And [We sent] Lūṭ[as a Messenger]. Behold, he said to his people, “Do you commit lewdness though you see [its iniquity]?
27:55
Would you approach men in your lusts rather than women? Nay, you are a people [grossly] ignorant!
27:56
But his people gave no other answer except by saying: “Drive out the family of Lūṭ from your town: these are indeed people who try to be clean!”
27:57
So We saved him and his family, except his wife; her We destined to be of those who perished.
27:58
And We rained down on them a shower [of stones]: and evil was the shower on those who were warned [but heeded not]!
27:59
Say [O Prophet]: All praise be to Allāh, and peace on His servantswhom He has chosen [to convey His Message]. [Who] is better? Allāh or [the false gods] they associate [Him with]?
