Juz 16
Juz 17
18. The Cave
18:75
He answered: “Did I not tell you that you won’t have patience with me?”
18:76
[Mūsā] said: “If ever I ask you about anything after this, keep me not in your company. You have received [an] excuse from my side.”
18:77
So they proceeded until they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they [townsmen] refused them hospitality. Then they found there a wall on the verge of collapse, so he set it up straight. [Mūsā] said: “If you had wished, surely you could have exacted some compensation for it!”
18:78
He answered: “This is the parting between me and you. Now I will tell you the interpretation of [things] over which you were unable to hold patience.
18:79
“As for the boat, it belonged to some poor [people] who plied in the river. So I wished to damage it, for there was after them a [certain] king who seized by force every [good] boat.
18:80
“As for the boy, his parents were people of Faith, and we feared that he would grieve them by obstinate rebellion and ingratitude [to Allāh].
18:81
“So we wished that their Lord would give them in exchange [a son] better in purity and more compassionate [to his parents].
18:82
“As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the town. Beneath it was a buried treasure to which they were entitled. Their father had been a righteous man, so your Lord desired that they should attain their age of full strength and take out their treasure — a mercy from your Lord. I did it not of my own accord. This is the interpretation of [those things] over which you were unable to hold patience.”
18:83
They ask you concerning Dhu’l-Qarnayn.Say, “I will relate to you something of his story.”
18:84
Verily, We established [his power] on earth, and We gave him ways and means to everything.
18:85
One [such] way he followed,
18:86
until, when he reached the place of the setting of the Sun, he found it setting in a spring of murky water, and near it he found a people. We said: “O Dhu’l-Qarnayn! [you have the choice] either to punish them or to treat them with kindness.”
18:87
He said: “Whoever does wrong, him shall we punish; then shall he be sent back to his Lord; and He will punish him with a punishment severe.
18:88
“But whoever believes, and works righteousness, he shall have an excellent reward, and we will command him to do easy task.”
18:89
Then he followed [another] way,
18:90
until, when he came to the place of the rising of the Sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against it [the Sun].
18:91
[He left them] as they were: We fully knew what was before him.
18:92
Then he followed [another] way,
18:93
until, when he reached [a tract] between the two mountains, he found beneath them a people who scarcely understood a word.
18:94
They said: “O Dhu’l-Qarnayn! The Gog and Magogdo great mischief on earth. Shall we then pay you [a regular] tribute in order that you may build a barrier between us and them?
18:95
He said: “[The power] which my Lord has granted me is better [than tribute]. So help me with strength [and labour]: I will erect a [strong] barrier between you and them.
18:96
“Bring me chunks of iron.” At length, when he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, He said, “Blow [with your bellows]!” Then, when he had made it [red] as fire, he said: “Bring it to me, so that I may pour over it, molten lead.”
18:97
Thus were they [the Gog and Magog] made powerless to scale it or to dig a hole through it.
18:98
He said: “This is a mercy from my Lord: But when the promise of my Lord comes [to pass], He will make it into dust; and the promise of my Lord is true.”
18:99
On that day We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another, and the Trumpet will be blown, and We shall assemble them all together.
18:100
And We shall present Hell that day for the Rejecters [of Truth to see], all spread out,
18:101
whose [unbelievers’] eyes had been under a veil from remembrance of Me, and who had been unable even to hear.
18:102
Do the Rejecters think that they [can] take My servantsas guardians besides Me? Verily, We have prepared Hell for the Rejecters as [their] abode.
18:103
Say [O Prophet]: “Shall we inform you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds?
18:104
“[They are] those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were doing good deeds?”
18:105
They are the ones who rejected the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him [in the Hereafter]: so, forfeited will be their deeds, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall give them no weight.
18:106
That is their reward: Hell, because they rejected Faith, and mocked My Signs and My Messengers.
18:107
As to those who believe and do righteous deeds, they have for their abode the Gardens of Paradise,
18:108
wherein they shall dwell forever: no change will they wish for from there.
18:109
Say [O Prophet]: “If the ocean were ink [wherewith to write out] the words of my Lord, sooner would the ocean be exhausted than would the words of my Lord, even if we came with another ocean like it, for its aid.”
18:110
Say [O Prophet]: “I am but a human being like yourselves, [except that] the revelation comes to me that your God is One God. Whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and, let him, in the worship of his Lord, join no one as partner [of Allāh].
19. Mary
Bismillah
19:1
Kāf. Hā. Yā. ‘Ain. Ṣād.
19:2
[This is] a narrative of the Mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakarīyā.
19:3
Behold! He called out to his Lord in secret,
19:4
Praying: “O My Lord! Infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head does glisten with grey: But never was I unprosperous, O My Lord, in my supplication to You!
19:5
“Now I fear [what] my relatives [will do] after me, and my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Yourself,
19:6
“[One that] will inherit me, and inherit some of the legacy of Ya‘qūb; and make him, O My Lord, one with whom You are well-pleased!”
19:7
[Allāh said:] “O Zakarīyā!We give you the good tidings of a son: his name shall be Yaḥyā,on none We have conferred that name before.”
19:8
He said: “O My Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have reached extreme old age?”
19:9
He [Allāh] said: “So [it will be]. Your Lord says: ‘That is easy for Me: I did indeed create you before when you were nothing!’”
19:10
He [Zakarīyā] said: “O My Lord! Set for me a Sign.” He [Allāh] said: “Your Sign is that you shall not speak to people for three nights straight.
19:11
So he [Zakarīyā] came out to his people from the chamber: and told them by sign to glorify Allāh in the morning and in the evening.
19:12
[To his son came the divine command:] “O Yaḥyā! Hold the Book firmly!” And We gave him Wisdom while [he was still] a child,
19:13
and compassion [for all] as [a gift] from Us, and purity: and he was [God‐]fearing,
19:14
and [he was] kind to his parents, and was not a tyrant, rebellious,
19:15
so be peace on him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised up to life [again]!
19:16
Relate in the Book [the story of] Mariyam [Mary],when she withdrew from her family to a place in the east.
19:17
She placed a screen [to hide herself] from them. Then We sent to her Our angel, and he appeared before her as a man complete.
19:18
She said: “I seek refuge from you with [Allāh] the Most-Gracious: [come not near me] if you do fear [Allāh].”
19:19
He said: “Nay, I am only a Messenger from your Lord to gift you a son pure [righteous].
19:20
She said: “How shall I have a son when no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?”
19:21
He said: “So [it will be]: your Lord says, ‘That is easy for Me: and [We wish] to appoint him as a Sign unto people and a Mercy from Us.’ It is a matter [so] decreed.”
19:22
So she conceived him [Īsā], and she retired with him to a remote place.
19:23
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree. She said [in her anguish]: “Ah! Would that I had died before this! Would that I had been a thing all forgotten.”
19:24
But [a voice] cried to her from beneath [the palm-tree]: “Grieve not! For your Lord has provided a rivulet beneath you;
19:25
“and shake towards yourself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you.
19:26
“So eat and drink and cool [your] eyes. And if you do see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to [Allāh] the Most-Gracious, therefore, this day I will enter into no talk with any human being.’”
19:27
Then she came with him to her people, holding him [in her arms]. They said: “O Mariyam! Truly, a grave thing have you committed!
19:28
“O Sister of Hārūn!Your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother a woman unchaste!”
19:29
So she pointed to him [the infant]. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?”
19:30
He said: “I am indeed a servant of Allāh. He has given me the Book and made me a Prophet,
19:31
“and He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has commanded me to pray and [pay] Zakāt as long as I am alive,
19:32
“[He] has made me kind to my mother, and has not made me tyrant, mischievous,
19:33
“and peace be on me the day I was born, the day I will die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life [again]!”
19:34
Such [was] ‘Īsā, the son of Mariyam. [This is] a statement of truth which they are doubting.
19:35
It is not befitting to [the majesty of] Allāh that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter, He only says to it, “Be!” and it is.
19:36
Verily, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord: therefore, worship Him alone. This is a Path that is straight.
19:37
But the Sectsdiffered among themselves. So woe to the Rejecters when they will come face to face a difficult Day!
19:38
How sharply will they see and hear, the Day that they will appear before Us! But, today, the wrongdoers are in deviation manifest!
19:39
And warn them of the Day of Lamentationwhen the matter would have [already] been settled while they were heedless and they did not believe.
19:40
It is We who will inherit the earth and all beings thereon, and to Us will they all be returned.
19:41
And mention in the Book [the story of] Ibrāhīm:He was a man of Truth, a Prophet.
19:42
[Remember] when he said to his father: “O My father! Why you worship that which hears not and sees not, and can profit you nothing?
19:43
“O My father! To me has come knowledge which did not reach you. So, follow me, I will guide you to a Path that is straight.
19:44
“O My father! Worship not the Shayṭān, for the Shayṭān is a rebel against [Allāh] the Most-Gracious.
19:45
“O My father! I fear lest a punishment afflict you from [Allāh] the Most-Gracious, so you become a friend of the Shayṭān.”
19:46
[His father] replied: “Are you disowning my gods, O Ibrāhīm? If you stop not, I will indeed stone you. Now get away from me for a good long while!”
19:47
Ibrāhīm said: “Peace be on you! I will pray to my Lord for your forgiveness: For He is to me most gracious.
19:48
“And I shun you [all] and those whom you invoke instead of Allāh: I will pray to my Lord, and, perhaps, by my prayer to my Lord, I shall not be unfortunate.”
19:49
When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped instead of Allāh, We bestowed on him Isḥāqand Ya‘qūb,and each one of them We made a Prophet.
19:50
And We bestowed of Our Mercy on them, and We granted them lofty tongue of truth.
19:51
And [also] mention in the Book [the story of] Mūsā:for he was chosen [and pure] and was a Messenger [and] a Prophet.
19:52
And We called him from the right side of the Mount Ṭūr,and drew him closer to Us, for close conversation.
19:53
And, out of Our Mercy, We gifted him his brother Hārūn [to support him] as a Prophet.
19:54
And mention in the Book [the story of] Ismā‘īl:He was true to what he promised, and he was a Messenger [and] a Prophet.
19:55
He used to enjoin his family to pray and [pay] Zakāt and he was approved in the sight of his Lord.
19:56
And mention Idrīs (Enoch)in the Book: He was a man of Truth [and] a Prophet,
19:57
and We raised him to a lofty position.
19:58
Those were some of the Prophets on whom Allāh did bestow His Grace, of the posterity of Ādam, and of those whom We carried [in the Ark] with Nūḥ,and of the posterity of Ibrāhīm and Isrā’īl— and of those whom We guided and chose. Whenever the Signs of [Allāh] the Most-Gracious were rehearsed to them, they would fall down in prostration, adoration and in tears.
19:59
But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts. Soon, then, will they face perdition,
19:60
except those who repentand believe, and do good deeds: For these will enter Paradise and they will not be wronged in the least.
19:61
[Theirs will be] Gardens of Eternity, those which [Allāh] the Most-Gracious has promised to His servantsin the Unseen: for His promise must [necessarily] be fulfilled.
19:62
There they will not hear any vain discourse, but only [salutations of] “Peace!” And they will have therein their sustenance, morning and evening.
19:63
That is Paradise which We [will] give as an inheritance to those of Our servants who fear [Allāh].
19:64
[The angels say:] “We descend not but by the command of your Lord: To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us, and what is in between: and your Lord never ever does forget,
19:65
“[He is] the Lord of the Heavens and of the earth, and of all that is in between. So worship Him [alone], and be [constant and] patient in His worship. Do you know of any who is worthy of the same name as He?”
19:66
Man says: “What? When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive?”
19:67
But does not Man call to mind that We created him before when he was nothing?
19:68
So, by your Lord, without doubt, We shall gather them together, along with the Shayṭāns; then shall We bring them forth on their knees round about Hell;
19:69
then shall We certainly drag out from every group all those who were most obstinately rebellious against [Allāh] the Most-Gracious.
19:70
And, certainly, We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein [Hell].
19:71
All of you will pass over it: This is, with your Lord, a decree ordained.
19:72
Then We shall save those who feared [Allāh], and We shall leave the wrongdoers therein, sitting on their knees.
19:73
When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, the Rejecters say to those who believe: “Which of the two sides [Rejecters and believers] is best in terms of position and fairer in assembly [of men around them].
19:74
How many [countless] generations before them have We destroyed, who were even better [than you] in terms of household goods and better in [outward] appearance?
19:75
Say: “Whoever goes astray, [Allāh] the Most-Gracious extends [the rope] to them, until, when they see the warning of Allāh [being fulfilled] — either in punishment or in [the approach of] The Hour— they will then realise who is worst in position, and [who is] weakest in terms of forces!”
19:76
“And Allāh does increase in guidance those who seek guidance. And the enduring good [deeds]are best in the sight of your Lord for reward [in the Hereafter] and [are] best in respect of [their] eventual return [recompense].”
19:77
Have you then seen the [sort of] the Manwho rejected Our Signs, [yet] said: “I shall certainly be given wealth and children?”
19:78
Has he peeped into the Unseen, or has he taken a promise with [Allāh] the Most-Gracious?
19:79
Nay! We shall record what he says, and We shall add and add to his punishment.
19:80
To Us shall return all that he talks of, and he shall reach Us empty-handed.
19:81
And they have taken [for worship] gods other than Allāh, to give them power [and glory]!
19:82
Nay! They [so-called “gods”] shall reject their worship, and become their adversaries.
19:83
Have you not seen that We have set satans on the Rejecters, to incite them strongly [in acts of disobedience]?
19:84
So make no haste against them, for We are counting out to them a [limited] number [of days].
19:85
The day We shall gather the [God‐]fearing to [meet] the Most-Gracious, like an assembly of [honoured] guests.
19:86
And We shall drive the sinners to Hell [like thirsty animals] driven down [to water].
19:87
They shall have no power of intercession [with Allāh] except such a one who has received [prior] permission from the Most-Gracious.
19:88
They said: “The Most-Gracious has betaken a son!”
19:89
Indeed, you have put forth a thing most grievous,
19:90
at which the heavens are about to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin,
19:91
that they attributed a son to the Most-Gracious.
19:92
For it does not behoove [the majesty of] the Most-Gracious that He should beget a son.
19:93
None of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must [eventually] come to the Most-Gracious as a [humble] servant.
19:94
He does take an account of them [all], and has numbered them [all] exactly.
19:95
And every one of them will come to Him all alone [unprotected] on the Day of Resurrection.
19:96
On those who believed and worked deeds of righteousness will the Most-Gracious bestow [His] love.
19:97
So have We made it [the Qur’ān] easy in your own tongue, that with it you may give glad tidings to the [God‐]fearing, and warn with it people given to [violent] altercation.
19:98
How many [countless] generations before them have We destroyed? Can you find a single one of them [now] or hear [so much as] a whisper of them?
Ṭā-hā
Bismillah
20:1
Ṭā-Hā.
20:2
We have not sent down the Qur’ān to you to be [a means] of your misery,
20:3
but only as an admonition to those who fear [Allāh],
20:4
a revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens.
20:5
The Most-Gracious is established on the Throne.
20:6
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on earth, and all between them, and all that is beneath the earth.
20:7
If you speak aloud [it is no matter]: for, verily, He [Allāh] knows what is secret and what is even more hidden.
20:8
Allāh! There is no god but He! To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.
20:9
And did the story of Mūsāreach you?
20:10
Behold, he saw a fire. So he said to his family: “Stay you [here]; I perceive a fire [at a distance]; perhaps I can bring you a piece [of fire] therefrom, or find some guidance at the [place of the] fire.”
20:11
But when he came to it [the fire], he was called: “O Mūsā!
20:12
“Verily, I am your Lord! Therefore, take off your shoes: you are in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā.
20:13
“I have chosen you: So listen [carefully] to what is being revealed to you.
20:14
“Verily, I am the God: There is no god but I: So worship Me [alone], and establish [regular] Prayer for My remembrance.
20:15
“Verily, the Houris coming, I have almost kept it hidden — so that every soul is rewarded by the measure of its endeavour.
20:16
“Therefore, let not the one who disbelieves therein and follows his [own] whims, divert you therefrom, leading you to perish!
20:17
“And what is that in your right hand, O Mūsā?”
20:18
He said, “It is my rod: on it I lean; with it I beat down fodder for my flock; and in it I find other uses.”
20:19
[Allāh] said, “Throw it, O Mūsā!”
20:20
He threw it, and behold! It was a snake, running.
20:21
[Allāh] said, “Seize it, and fear not: We shall return it to its former condition!
20:22
“[Now] draw your hand close to your side: It shall come out white [and shining] without stain, [and this is] another Sign,
20:23
“[This is] in order that We may show you of Our Greatest Signs.
20:24
“Go you to the Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed [all limits].”
20:25
[Mūsā] said: “O My Lord! Dilate my bosom;
20:26
“and ease my task for me;
20:27
“And remove the knot from my tongue,
20:28
“so that they may understand what I say:
20:29
“And give me a supporter from my family,
20:30
“Hārūn,my brother;
20:31
“Strengthen me through him,
20:32
“And make him share my task:
20:33
“So that we may abundantly glorify You,
20:34
“And abundantly remember You:
20:35
“For You are All-Seeing us.”
20:36
[Allāh] said: “Granted is your petition, O Mūsā!
20:37
“And, indeed, We conferred a favour on you a second time.
20:38
“[Remember] when We inspired your mother the message:
20:39
“‘Throw him [the child] into the chest, and then throw [the chest] into the river. The river will cast him up on the bank, and he will be taken up by one who is an enemy to Me and an enemy to him’. And I endowed you with love from Me: And [this] in order that you may be reared under My eye.
20:40
“[Remember] when your sister walked forth and said, ‘Shall I show you one who will nurse and rear the [child]?’ Thus We brought you back to your mother, so that her eye might be cooled and she should not grieve. Then you killed a man, but We saved you from grief, and We tried You in various ways. Then did you spend a number of years with the people of Madyan. And [only] then did you come [here] as ordained,O Mūsā!
20:41
“And I have chosen you for Myself.
20:42
“Go, you and your brother, with My Signs, and slacken not, either of you, in keeping Me in remembrance.
20:43
“Go, both of you, to the Pharaoh,for he has indeed transgressed [all limits];
20:44
“And speak to him mildly, by chance he may take warning or fear [Allāh].”
20:45
They [Mūsā and Hārūn] said: “Our Lord! We fear lest he may hasten to punish us, or lest he violate [all bounds].”
20:46
He [Allāh] said: “Fear not the two of you: for I am with you: I hear and see [everything].
20:47
“So go you both to him [Pharaoh], and say, ‘Verily, we are Messengers sent by your Lord: Send forth, therefore, the Children of Isrā’īl with us, and punish them not. With a Sign, indeed, have we come from your Lord! And peace be on the one who follows guidance!
20:48
“‘Verily, it has been revealed to us that the punishment[awaits] those who disbelieve [this Message] and turn away.’”
20:49
[When this message was delivered, the Pharaoh] said: “Who then, O Mūsā, is the Lord of the two of you?”
20:50
He [Mūsā] said: “Our Lord is He who gave to each [created] thing its form and then guided [it].”
20:51
[The Pharaoh] said: “What then is the condition of the previous generations?”
20:52
He [Mūsā] replied: “The knowledge of that is with my Lord, duly recorded in a Book: my Lord never errs, nor He forgets.
20:53
“He is the One who has made for you the earth as an expanse [cradle]; has paved for you ways [and channels] in it; and has sent down water from the sky.” With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants.
20:54
Eat [for yourselves] and pasture your cattle. Verily, in this are Signs for men endowed with understanding.
20:55
From the [earth] did We create you, and into it shall We return you,and from it shall We bring you out once again.
20:56
And We showed him [the Pharaoh] all Our Signs, but he disbelieved and refrained.
20:57
He said: “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Mūsā?
20:58
“So, we will surely produce magic similar to yours! Hence, make a tryst between us and yourself, which we shall not fail to keep, neither we nor you, in a place where both shall have equitable chance.”
20:59
He [Mūsā] said: “Your tryst is the Day of the Festival, and let the people be assembled after sunrise.”
20:60
So the Pharaoh retreated. He concerted his plan, and then came [back].
20:61
Mūsā said to them [magicians]: “Woe to you! Forge you not a lie against Allāh, lest He annihilate you [at once] by punishment. The forger surely suffers failure.”
20:62
So they disputed, one with another, over their affair, and they held secret parleys.
20:63
They said: “These two are certainly [expert] magicians. Their object is to drive you out from your land with their magic, and to do away with your ideal way.
20:64
“Therefore, concert your plan, and then assemble in a single rank. He succeeds today who gains the upper hand.”
20:65
They said: “O Mūsā! Will you throw [first] or should we be the first to throw?”
20:66
He said, “Nay, throw you first!” Then, behold, their ropes and their sticks, so it seemed to him on account of their magic, are running [around]!
20:67
So Mūsā felt fearful in his mind.
20:68
We said [O Mūsā]: “Fear not! For you have indeed the upper hand,
20:69
“and throw that which is in your right hand. It will swallow up that which they have faked. What they have faked is but a magician’s trick, and the magician succeeds not in his endeavour.”
20:70
So the magicians threw [themselves] down in prostration. They said, “We believe in the Lord of Hārūn and Mūsā.”
20:71
He [the Pharaoh] said: “Did you believe in Him before I give you permission? Surely this must be your leader who has taught you magic! Be sure I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will have you crucified on trunks of palm-trees. So shall you know for certain, which of us can give the more severe and the more lasting punishment!”
20:72
They said: “Never shall we prefer you to what has come to us of the Clear Signs and of Him who created us! So decree whatever you desire to decree: for you can only decree [in matters related to] the life in this world.
20:73
“For us, we have believed in our Lord: May He forgive us our sins and the magic to which you did compel us: For Allāh is Best and Most-Enduring.”
20:74
Verily, he who comes to his Lord as a sinner, for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live.
20:75
But he who comes to Him [Allāh] as a believer, who has worked righteous deeds — for such are ranks exalted,
20:76
[For them are] Gardens of Eternity, beneath which flow rivers: They will dwell therein forever: such is the reward of those who purify themselves [from evil].
20:77
We revealed to Mūsā: “Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken [by the Pharaoh] and without any [other] fear.”
20:78
So the Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the sea completely overwhelmed them and covered them up.
20:79
The Pharaoh led his people astray; he did not lead them aright.
20:80
“O You Children of Isrā’īl! We delivered you from your enemy, and We [mutually] appointed a time and place [to meet you] on the right side of the Ṭūr [Mountain],and We sent down to you manna and quails:
20:81
“Eat of the wholesome things We have provided for your sustenance, and commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should descend on you: and on whoever descends My Wrath does fall down indeed!
20:82
“Verily, I am the One who ever forgives those who repent, believe, and do right, who are on [true] guidance.”
20:83
[When Mūsā was up on the Mount, Allāh said:] “What made you hasten in advance of your people, O Mūsā?”
20:84
He replied: “They are close on my footsteps: I hastened to You, O My Lord, so that You may be pleased [with me].”
20:85
[Allāh] said: “We have tested your people in your absence: The Sāmirīhas led them astray.”
20:86
So Mūsā returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: “O My people! Did not your Lord make a good promise to you? Did you then feel my absence was too long?Or did you desire that the Wrath of your Lord should descend on you, and so you broke your pledge to me?”
20:87
They said: “We broke not the pledge to you, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the people, so we threw them [into the fire], and so did the Sāmirī.
20:88
“Then he brought out [of the fire] before the [people] the body of a calfwhich bellowed. So they said: This is your god, and the god of Mūsā, but he [Mūsā] has forgotten!”
20:89
Could they not see that it [the calf] could not return them a word [for answer], and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?
20:90
Before this, Hārūn had [already] said to them: “O My people! You are being tested in this. Verily, your Lord is [Allāh] the Most-Gracious: So follow me and obey my command.”
20:91
They had said: “We will continue to devote ourselves to it until Mūsā returns to us.”
20:92
[Mūsā] said: “O Hārūn! What kept you back when you saw them going astray,
20:93
“from following me? Did you then disobey my order?”
20:94
[Hārūn] replied: “O Son of my mother! Seize [me] not by my beard nor by [the hair of] my head! Truly, I feared lest you should say: ‘You have caused a division among the Children of Isrā’īl, and you did not observe my word!’”
20:95
[Mūsā] said: “What then is your case, O Sāmirī?”
20:96
He replied: “I saw what they failed to see: so I took a handful [of dust] from the footprint of the Messenger, and threw it [into the calf]: Thus did my soul embellished [commanded] to me.”
20:97
[Mūsā] said: “Get you gone! But your [punishment] in this life will be that you will say, ‘Touch me not;’ and, moreover [for a future penalty] you have a promise that you will not be failed. Now look at your god, of whom you have become a devotee: We will certainly burn it in a blazing Fire and then utterly scatter it over the sea!”
20:98
Verily, your God is Allāh: there is no god but He. His knowledge embraces all things.
20:99
Thus do We relate to you [O Prophet] some stories of what happened earlier: for We have sent you a reminder from Us.
20:100
Whoever turns away from it, verily, he will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection;
20:101
They will abide in that [state] forever, and grievous will be their burden on the Day of Resurrection,
20:102
the Day the Trumpet will be blown: that Day, We shall gather the sinners,blue-eyed[with terror].
20:103
In whispers will they tell each other: “You spent not longer than ten [days];
20:104
We know best what they say, when the best of them in judgement would say: “You spent only one day!”
20:105
They ask you about the mountains: say, “My Lord will utterly scatter them [as dust, on the Day of Resurrection];
20:106
“He will leave them as plains, smooth and level;
20:107
“Nothing crooked or uneven will you see in them.”
20:108
On that Day, they will follow the caller [straight]: no crookedness in him: and all voices will be hushed [in the presence of] the Most-Gracious, so that you will hear nothing but whispers.
20:109
On that Day, shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission has been granted by the Most-Gracious and whose word He approves.
20:110
He knows what is before them or behind them: but they comprehend Him not.
20:111
[All] faces [of the arrogant] shall be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting.Failed indeed will be one who carries [the burden of] wrongdoing [on his back].
20:112
[But] he who works deeds of righteousness, and has faith [in Allāh], will have no fear of wrong [being done to him] nor of any curtailment [of what is his due].
20:113
Thus have We sent this down as an Arabic Qur’ān, and explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order that they may fear [Allāh], or that it may cause them to remember [Him].
20:114
Exalted above all is Allāh, The King [of the Kings],The Truth![O Prophet] be not in haste with the Qur’ānbefore its revelation to you is completed, but say, “O My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”
20:115
Earlier, We had taken the covenant of Ādam, but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve.
20:116
And [remember] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves before Ādam.” They [all] prostrated, but not Iblīs:he declined.
20:117
So We said: “O Ādam! Verily, this [Shayṭān] is an enemy to you and your wife: Let him not throw you both out of Paradise, so that you face misery.
20:118
“Therein [Paradise] is [enough provision] for you not to go hungry, nor to go naked,
20:119
“Nor will you suffer from thirst, nor will you be smitten by Sun’s heat.”
20:120
But the Shayṭān whispered to him. He said, “O Ādam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that never decays?”
20:121
So, they both [Ādam and his wife] ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise [trees] on their bodies. So Ādam disobeyed his Lord and fell into deviation.
20:122
Thereafter, his Lord chose him [for His Grace], turned to him [forgave him], and guided [him].
20:123
He said: “Get you down, both of you, all together, from it [Paradise], with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor will he fall into misery.
20:124
“But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him will be a life miserable, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”
20:125
He will say: “O My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight [before]?”
20:126
[Allāh] will say: “Thus did you, when Our Signs came to you, forgot them: so will you, this day, be forgotten.”
20:127
And thus do We punish one who transgresses beyond bounds and who believes not in the Sings of his Lord: and the Punishment of the Hereafter is greater hardship, more enduring.
20:128
Is it not a guidance to such [people to call to mind] how many generations before them did We destroy, in whose dwellings they [now] move?Verily, in this are Signs for people endowed with understanding.
20:129
Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord, [their punishment] must necessarily have come [by now]; [but] there is a term appointed [for respite].
20:130
Therefore, endure patiently what they say, and [constantly] proclaim the praises of your Lord before the rising of the Sun, and before its setting; and glorify [Allāh] for a part of the [late] hours of the night, and at the sides of the day:that you may be pleased.
20:131
Strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment, to some of them, splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: But the sustenance of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
Enjoin your family to pray, and be constant therein. We ask you not to provide sustenance: We provide it for you. But the best end [in the Hereafter] is for those who fear [Allāh].
20:133
They say: “Why does he [the Prophet] not bring us a Sign from his Lord?” Has not a Clear Sign come to them [in the shape of] the earlier Scriptures of revelation?
20:134
Had We destroyed them with a punishment before this, they would have said: “Our Lord! If only you had sent us a Messenger, we should certainly have followed Your Signs before we were humbled and put to shame.”
20:135
Say: “Each one [of us] is waiting [in expectation]: wait you, therefore, and soon shall you know who are the people of the Straight Path, and who it is that has received guidance.”
