All glory to [Allāh] who took His servant [the Prophet] on a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque1to the Farthest Mosque,2whose precincts We did bless, in order that We may show him some of Our Signs. Verily, He [Allāh] is the One who is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
And We decreed for the Children of Isrā’īl in the Book that twice would you make mischief on the earth and be elated with mighty arrogance1[and twice would you be punished]!
When the first of the warnings came to pass, We sent against you Our servants,1given to terrible might. They rampaged through [the innermost parts of your] homelands. And it was a warning [completely] fulfilled.
If you do well, you do well for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] against yourselves. So when the second of the warnings came to pass, [We permitted your enemies] to blacken your faces, and to enter [your] prayer house [Temple] as they entered it before, and destroy all that fell into their power.
It may be that your Lord may [yet again] show Mercy unto you; but if you revert [to your old ways], We shall revert [to Our punishments]:1And We have made Hell a prison for those who reject [Faith].
Verily, this Qur’ān does guide to [the Path] that is most straight, and gives the good tidings to the Believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward;
We have made the Night and the Day as two [of Our] Signs: the Sign of the Night have We made dark while the Sign of the Day We have made bright, so that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the count of the years and the numbers. And all things have We have explained in detail.
Whoever receives guidance, he receives it for his own benefit, and whoever goes astray, he does so to his own loss. No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another, nor would We punish [a people] until We had sent [to them] a Messenger [to convey the Message and give warning].
When We decide to destroy a town, We command its chiefs enjoying soft life [to obey the right Path], yet they continue to transgress;1so the word is proved true against them.2Then We destroy them utterly.
If any do wish for the transitory things [of this life], We readily grant them such things, as We wish, for whomsoever We wish. In the end, We will provide Hell for them. They will burn therein, disgraced and banished.
And those who do seek the Hereafter, and strive therefor with all his due effort, and have Faith, they are the ones whose striving will be thanked [by Allāh].
Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to the parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not ‘ugh’ to them,1nor scold them, but say to them kind words.
Your Lord knows best what is in your hearts. If you do deeds of righteousness, verily, He is Most-Forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again [in repentance].
And render to the kindred their due rights, as [also] to those in want [who do not beg], and to the traveller: And squander not [your wealth] in a wasteful way.
And even if you [O Prophet] turn away from those [who come to you] in pursuit of Mercy from your Lord, which you [too] expect, speak to them an easy word [of kindness].1
Nor take life — which Allāh has made sacred — except for just cause. And if anyone is slain wrongfully, we have given his heir authority [to demand Qiṣāṣ,1or to forgive]: but let him nor exceed bounds in the matter of taking life; for he is helped [by the Law].
Approach not the orphan’s property except in the best way, until he attains the age of full strength; and fulfil [every] pledge, for [every] pledge will be accountable [on the Day of Judgement].
These are among the [precepts of] wisdom, which your Lord has revealed to you. Take not, along with Allāh, another object of worship, lest you should be thrown into Hell, blameworthy, rejected.
We have explained [things] in various [ways] in this Qur’ān,1in order that they may receive admonition, but it only increases their [polytheists’] flight [from the Truth]!
Say [O Prophet]: If there had been [other] gods with Him, as they claim, behold, they would certainly have sought out a way [in reaching out] to the Lord of the Throne!1
The seven heavens and the earth, and all beings therein, declare His glory. There is not a thing but celebrates His praise. But you understand not how they declare His glory! Verily, He is Oft-Forbearing, Most-Forgiving!
And We put coverings over their hearts [and minds] lest they should understand it [the Qur’ān], and [We put] deafness into their ears.1So when you do mention your Lord — and Him alone — in the Qur’ān, they turn on their backs, fleeing [from the Truth].
We know best what it is they listen to, when they listen to you [O Prophet]; and when they meet in private. Behold, the wrongdoers say, “You follow none other than a man bewitched!”
“or any creature which, in your hearts, is difficult [to be created].” Then will they say: “Who will cause us to return [to life after death]?” Say: “The One who created you first!” Then will they wag their heads towards you [in contempt], and say, “When will that happen?” Say, “Maybe it will be quite soon!
“It will be on the Day when He will call you, and you will answer [His call] with His praise, and you will think that you stayed but a little while [in your graves]!”
Say to My servants1that they should [only] say those things that are best: for the Shayṭān sows enmity among them: for the Shayṭān is to Man a clear enemy.
It is your Lord who knows you best: If He pleases, He will grant you mercy, or if He pleases, He will punish you: And We have not sent you as a guardian [over their affairs].
And it is your Lord who knows all beings best, which are in the heavens and on earth. And We distinguished some Prophets over others1and We gave to Dā’ūd2Zabūr [the Psalms].
Those whom they call upon [themselves] seek means of closeness to their Lord, as to who are nearest. They hope for His Mercy and fear His punishment: For the punishment of your Lord is something to be feared.
There is not a population but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a dreadful punishment. That is written in the [eternal] Book.
And We withheld1sending the Signs [Miracles] only because people of previous generations disbelieved them.2We sent the She-camel to the Thamūd3as a visible [Sign], but they treated her wrongfully. We only send the Signs by way of frightening [warning].
Behold! We told you [O Prophet] that your Lord does encircle people round: We made the Dream,1which We showed you a trial for people, as also the Cursed Tree2[mentioned] in the Qur’ān: We warn them, but it only increases their inordinate rebellion!
And [remember] when We said to the angels: “Prostrate unto Ādam.”1They [all] prostrated except Iblīs. He said, “Shall I prostrate to one whom You did create from clay?”
He [the Shayṭān] said: “See You! This is the one whom You have honoured over me! If You will but respite me to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seduce his progeny — all but a few!”
And beguile those whom you can among them, with your [seductive] voice; make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry; share with them wealth and children; and make promises to them.” But the Shayṭān promises them nothing but deceit.
Your Lord is the One who drives along the ships gently for you through the sea, in order that you may seek of His bounty. For He is to you Most-Merciful.
When distress seizes you at sea, those that you call upon — besides Him — leave you in the lurch! But when He brings you back safe to land, you turn away [from Him]. Most ungrateful is Man!
Do you then feel secure that He will not cause you to be swallowed up beneath the earth when you are on land, or that He will not send against you a [violent] wind carrying pebbles and then you shall find no guardian,
or do you feel secure that He will not send you back a second time to it [sea] and send against you a violent wind to drown you because of your rejection [of the Message], so that you will find no helper therein to sue1Us?
We have honoured the sons of Ādam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things wholesome; and We distinguished them over a great part of Our creation.
On the Day [of Resurrection] We shall call together all human beings with their [respective] leaders: those who are given their record in their right hand will read it [with pleasure], and they will not be wronged in the least.
And they almost succeeded in [their] effort to tempt you [O Prophet] away from that which We had revealed to you,1to substitute in Our name something different: [in that case], behold! They would certainly have made you [their] friend!
In that case, We should have made you taste double portion [of punishment] in this life, and a double portion in death: and, moreover, you would have found none to help you against Us!
They were about to scare you off the land, in order to expel you, but in that case they would not have stayed [therein] after you, except for a little while.
Establish [regular] Prayer at the Sun’s decline till the [beginning of] darkness of the night,1and [establish] the recital of the Qur’ān in the dawn [prayer], for the recital of dawn is witnessed.
And as for [late] night, keep awake a part of it offering an additional prayer for yourself:1by chance your Lord may raise you to a Station of Praise [and Glory]!
And say [O Prophet]: “O My Lord! Let my entry be by the Gate of Truth, and [likewise] my exit by the Gate of Truth; and grant me from you an authority to help [me].”1
We send down the Qur’ān [stage by stage] which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe, [but] for the wrongdoers it causes only loss after loss.
When We bestow Our favours on Man, he turns away and becomes remote on his side [instead of coming closer to Us], and when evil seizes him, he gives himself up to despair!
Say: “If the whole of Mankind and Jinns1were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur’ān,2they will not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.”
“Or you have a house of gold, or you mount a ladder right into the skies. No, we shall not believe even in your mounting until you send down to us a Book that we could read.” Say: “Glory to my Lord! Am I but a Messenger, human?”
What kept people back from belief, when Guidance had come to them, was nothing but [this:] They said, “Has Allāh sent a human [like us] as [His] Messenger?”
Say [O Prophet]: “If there were settled, on earth, angels walking about in peace and quiet, We should certainly have sent them down from the heavens an angel as a Messenger.”
It is the one whom Allāh guides, that is on true guidance; but the one whom He leaves astray, for such will you find no Guardian besides Him. On the Day of Resurrection, We shall gather them together, dragged on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf. Their [eternal] abode will be Hell. Every time it would diminish, We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire.
That is their recompense, because they rejected Our Signs, and said, “When we are reduced to bones and broken particles, will we really be raised up into a new creation?”
See they not that Allāh, who created the heavens and the earth, has power to create the like of them [anew]? He has decreed a term appointed for them, of which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers refuse [to receive it] except with ingratitude.
Say [O Prophet]: “If you had control of the Treasures of the Mercy of my Lord, behold, you would keep them back, fearing to spend them: for Man is [ever] miserly!”
To Mūsā We gave nine Clear Signs,1so ask the Children of Isrā’īl. When he came to them, the Pharaoh2said to him: “O Mūsā! I consider you, indeed, to have been bewitched!”
[Mūsā] said, “You know well that these things have been sent down by none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth as proofs, and I consider you indeed, O Pharaoh, to be one doomed to perish!”
And We said, thereafter, to the Children of Isrā’īl: “Dwell [securely] in the land:” but when the second of the warnings comes to pass, We will gather you together in a mingled crowd.1
Say: “Whether you believe in it or not, it is true that those who were given knowledge beforehand, when it is recited to them, they fall down on their faces in prostration,
Say: “Call upon Allāh, or call upon Raḥmān [the Most-Gracious]: by whatever name you call upon Him, [it is well]: for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.1Neither shout your prayer aloud nor say it in a whispering tone, but seek a middle course between.”
Say: “Praise be to Allāh, who begot no son, and has no partner in [His] Sovereignty, nor does He have a protector out of humiliation. So [loudly] proclaim His greatness.”
